SRK talks about ‘growing intolerance’, gets support and criticism!

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan isn’t as outspoken as he used to be, but in an interview with Rajdeep Sardesai, the actor spoke about ‘growing intolerance’ in the country.

“With great power comes great vulnerabilities. If I take a stand on an X thing or a Y thing, people will come out and throw stones at my house but if I do take a stand, I’ll stand by it. I feel sad, it’s unfortunate and extremely pathetic but its better to keep quiet and do your job” Khan said, a day before his birthday.

The actor added that there is a little more leeway for actors to express themselves in America, as compared to India.

“How many times should I react? America with all its issues and non-issues has slightly more leeway” he said.

When asked about the ‘growing intolerance’ in the country, which has ‘forced’ the so-called ‘intelligentsia’ in the country to give back their awards, Khan said “Yes there is intolerance, there is growing intolerance. People put words in the air even before thinking. We keep talking about the new India, but if this country is not secular, happy in its approach and allowing people to be… the youngsters are not going to stand for it. It’s stupid to be intolerant. And this is my biggest issue. Not being secular in this country is the worst kind of crime you can do as a patriot”

In a rare attempt at giving his political take, Shah Rukh said there shouldn’t be ‘vote banks’ in the country.

“I am saying this as a citizen of this nation, we will never be a power if you don’t believe that all religions are equal. You often hear about vote banks, there should not be vote bank politics, it’s nonsense” Khan said.

The biggest statement, however, came when he was asked if he would give up his Padma Shri award. To which Khan said “I mean just for a symbolic gesture yes, if I have to.”

The actor, who married a hindu girl, also said inter-religious marriages should be perfectly normal.

“But that should not be an example. This should be the perfectly normal thing to do. Hindus living in perfect harmony with Muslims”

Other key points from SRK’s interview

  • We have made a huge thing about our meat-eating habits. How can the food habits of people be an issue?
  • In my house, everyone is free to follow their religion. My kids were confused about whether they were Muslim or Hindu, I said ‘why not Christian?’
  • If you are a patriot, you must love your country as a whole, not parts of it as religions and regions
  • Anupam Kher should be able to give his opinion about another director and be able to have a discussion about it. That’s tolerance
  • I think it’s very brave of those returning their awards. I am on their side. If they tell me to join them on a march or a press conference, I would
  • Personally, it’s too much of symbolism to return my awards. Just returning something, I am not a believer in that
  • I have a weapon on my side. I think I am extremely loved by people. If someone takes a stand against me, I have enough people to love me back. I am not scared, just selfish sometimes. I don’t want a nuisance, I am scared of a nuisance. I work 18 hours a day and I need to be left alone to do my job
  • It is very degrading and humiliating to have to prove my patriotism. I am an Indian-born movie star. I am an Indian-born Indian. I am Indian – how does that get questioned? Nobody has more right to live in this country than me, and I am not going to leave. So shut up

The response to SRK’s ‘growing intolerance’ statement has received its fair share of support and criticism.

The biggest support to his statement, quite unexpectedly, came from BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who said “If someone says ‘there shouldn’t be intolerance in the country” what is wrong in that? The nation has never been intolerant and debates won’t spoil the atmosphere”

However, the actor has been heavily criticised on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook for his statement. A lot of people have spoken about his ‘tolerance’ level at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and also about the fact that he was detained and questioned at the US airport back in 2010. Others have said that the superstar is adding fuel to the media and Congress created debate, more so because of his closeness to the Gandhi family.

  • whenever SRK wearing Muffler his movies goes ATB…CE. this time again he wears muffler Dilwale going to ATB.

  • @ Mohit :

    1. Making statements is a means to protest . If intolerance is not destroying the image of India , then the protests from an actor will NEVER hamper India’s image .

    2. You think writing an article or talking to the Govt will solve the issues ? Are you stupid ? Tell me five problems which have been solved by mere submission of an article ! Even Tagore gave back his title as a protest , almost 30 influential have given back their awards – are they mad ?

    3. BJP or Modi can’t be blamed for that incident in Dadri ? Is that so ? In that case Modi can’t be given credit to any of the developments as well , right ? BJP is the root cause behind all this intolerance . They have to take the blame .

    4. Communal riots happened during 1984 , that too , as a result of the most sensitive incident in the history of India . Those who are giving back their awards (at present) did not have possess those awards in 1984 , did they ? Most of them were kids at that time ! So , stop giving excuses like a fool !

  • We are a very tolerant country indeed- we allow foreign deadbeats from prisonstan like pakistani javed iqbal to roam freely here n leaving barbaric rants against Indian citizens as he pleases…!

  • More intolerance is needed as we shouldnt allow foreign prisoners like pakistani javed talk crap about any Indian or our religions…!

Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan To Have The Best VFX Ever!

The King Khan Of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan says that the VFX of his highly anticipated film ‘Fan‘ is best in the world and has not seen before anywhere in the world, not even in Hollywood.

Shah Rukh Khan recently informed a popular daily, “The VFX in Fan is done like never before seen in the world. Twice Hollywood has strived to do what we have done in Fan and failed.”

The ‘Happy New Year‘ actor said that they met many hollywood studios but they told them that it can’t be done and they even said that it so bad which made the ‘Fan‘ team think to drop the film.

SRK’s VFX team took 3 months to research and said that this kind of VFX can be done and they did it in spite of time consumed.

Producer of the film Aditya Chopra called SRK from Paris and said that doing this kind of work is like an achievement for us. Shah Rukh says that he is proud of his team and currently a team of 250 people are working on it.

The teaser of ‘Fan‘ will release on SRK’s birthday which is 2nd on November and the film is slated to release on 15th April 2016.

  • ”Personally, it’s too much of symbolism to return my awards. ”Just returning something, I am not a believer in that” , & i can join them ”on a march or a press conference”. if asked” :)

for those who says SRK supported returning awards. Respect SRK!

  • Kudos. Shah Rukh Khan defends the idea of the secular with more integrity than many who just pay it lip-service. Where Rajdeep & other reporters try to get Shah Rukh Khan to say what they wanted to hear but SRK acts smart enough and answers it beautifully, wisely .

Well said SRK. We are with you & we promise to watch your film twice more than we watch always for the truth, for expressing own opinion, if anyone has problem with someone else’s opinion for saying the truth, for saying his/their own opinion than that’s their own problems, not your .

  • agreed with Shah Rukh Khan. btw you are the living proof of what we were taught in school- that success is 99% work and 1% luck is incorrect!

  • * In the West, opinions r respected. In our country, I think opinion is taken with a little more aggression if it doesn’t agree with your. *

    SO TRULY SAID. AMAZING!

  • & this one *I have a weapon on my side. I think I am extremely loved by people. If someone takes a stand against me, I have enough ppl to love me back. I am not scared, just selfish sometimes. I don’t want a nuisance, I am scared of a nuisance. I work 18 hours a day and I need to be left alone to do my job*

  • @mohit:
What’s wrong if someone says there should not be any intolerance in the nation??? Can you elaborate how does he bcm modi hater??? Your very own BJP leaders are calling him Deshdrohi, Pakistani agent etc. Isn’t this intolerance???

Union ministers are comparing Dalits with Dogs, Haryana CM says Muslims must leave India, all the BJP leaders are justifying the Kulbargi & Davolkar killing, so on for Dadri incident. The govt does not want to listen the voice of thousands of FTII students. If there is no intolerance then what is these all???

  • Now in this country if u will say truth RSS & BJP will say go to Pakistan I asked those guys this is your personal country???

  • I love Srk and Salman as actors, but they should come out and say what religion they belong to instead of always mixing all religion.Iam amuslim and i don’t like when someone makes my religion like agame and to be used as convienience and the same goes for other religious people.

  • well said srk. some people are criticising him. if a person expresses his feelings in this country even that is not tolerated. if this is not intolerance then what it is. what stupidity is this to say this used to happen during congress also. no matter whoever is in the centre this intolerance cannot be tolerated. whether it is congress or bjp. and now the people of India have had enough. they won’t let it happen anymore. its time to fight against it. now the people won’t stay quite. people have risen. n whoever is at the centre has to take responsibility. modi can’t run away n make lame excuses like this used to happen before.
