SRK talks about ‘growing intolerance’, gets support and criticism!

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan isn’t as outspoken as he used to be, but in an interview with Rajdeep Sardesai, the actor spoke about ‘growing intolerance’ in the country.

“With great power comes great vulnerabilities. If I take a stand on an X thing or a Y thing, people will come out and throw stones at my house but if I do take a stand, I’ll stand by it. I feel sad, it’s unfortunate and extremely pathetic but its better to keep quiet and do your job” Khan said, a day before his birthday.

The actor added that there is a little more leeway for actors to express themselves in America, as compared to India.

“How many times should I react? America with all its issues and non-issues has slightly more leeway” he said.

When asked about the ‘growing intolerance’ in the country, which has ‘forced’ the so-called ‘intelligentsia’ in the country to give back their awards, Khan said “Yes there is intolerance, there is growing intolerance. People put words in the air even before thinking. We keep talking about the new India, but if this country is not secular, happy in its approach and allowing people to be… the youngsters are not going to stand for it. It’s stupid to be intolerant. And this is my biggest issue. Not being secular in this country is the worst kind of crime you can do as a patriot”

In a rare attempt at giving his political take, Shah Rukh said there shouldn’t be ‘vote banks’ in the country.

“I am saying this as a citizen of this nation, we will never be a power if you don’t believe that all religions are equal. You often hear about vote banks, there should not be vote bank politics, it’s nonsense” Khan said.

The biggest statement, however, came when he was asked if he would give up his Padma Shri award. To which Khan said “I mean just for a symbolic gesture yes, if I have to.”

The actor, who married a hindu girl, also said inter-religious marriages should be perfectly normal.

“But that should not be an example. This should be the perfectly normal thing to do. Hindus living in perfect harmony with Muslims”

Other key points from SRK’s interview

  • We have made a huge thing about our meat-eating habits. How can the food habits of people be an issue?
  • In my house, everyone is free to follow their religion. My kids were confused about whether they were Muslim or Hindu, I said ‘why not Christian?’
  • If you are a patriot, you must love your country as a whole, not parts of it as religions and regions
  • Anupam Kher should be able to give his opinion about another director and be able to have a discussion about it. That’s tolerance
  • I think it’s very brave of those returning their awards. I am on their side. If they tell me to join them on a march or a press conference, I would
  • Personally, it’s too much of symbolism to return my awards. Just returning something, I am not a believer in that
  • I have a weapon on my side. I think I am extremely loved by people. If someone takes a stand against me, I have enough people to love me back. I am not scared, just selfish sometimes. I don’t want a nuisance, I am scared of a nuisance. I work 18 hours a day and I need to be left alone to do my job
  • It is very degrading and humiliating to have to prove my patriotism. I am an Indian-born movie star. I am an Indian-born Indian. I am Indian – how does that get questioned? Nobody has more right to live in this country than me, and I am not going to leave. So shut up

The response to SRK’s ‘growing intolerance’ statement has received its fair share of support and criticism.

The biggest support to his statement, quite unexpectedly, came from BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who said “If someone says ‘there shouldn’t be intolerance in the country” what is wrong in that? The nation has never been intolerant and debates won’t spoil the atmosphere”

However, the actor has been heavily criticised on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook for his statement. A lot of people have spoken about his ‘tolerance’ level at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai and also about the fact that he was detained and questioned at the US airport back in 2010. Others have said that the superstar is adding fuel to the media and Congress created debate, more so because of his closeness to the Gandhi family.

  • Shahrukh.. I have been your huge fan, follower and supporter.. But I can’t support the statements you’ve made.

The very fact that you can make such statements in the public, shows that India is tolerant country. You owe everything you have to the people of this country, but its disappointing to read such comments from you just because of your dislike towards Narendra Modi and closeness to Gandhi parivar.

How can you even support people who are returning awards? Like Kamal Hassan said today.. why do they need to return awards, why can’t they sit down and talk to the government. Write a article or open letter.

Communal riots used to happen in the country even when Congress was heading the government. Why no one returned their award back then? Why now?

How is BJP or Modi to be blamed for an incident like Dadri in Uttar Pradesh where Akhilesh Yadav is the Chief Minister? Law and Order is in his hands.

You say you don’t have freedom of speech now. But did you have freedom when Congress was ruling? Being a big celebrity, you’ll even get criticised if you have a wrong statement against Salman… Big stars and celebrities have to be politically correct or risk the criticism that comes their way.

Very disappointed with your statement. You had a special place in my heart, but no longer.

  • I respect SRK for what he has achieved but I feel his statement shows lack of understanding on this subject and slight inclination towards a particular political outfit.
I strongly advocate it to everyone that media and people who are returning their awards are creating a bad image of India to the outer world.

  • Utter trash for those saying he is adding more fuel to media or congress!!!!
The guy is speaking his mind in the largest democracy in the world.
Before being an actor he is an Indian a human so pls let him extricate his gesture the best way he feels he can. Period!!

  • Yeah, take out that Wankhede weapon on Srk, morons! When Aamir speaks, they use the ‘divorce’ weapon.

These Twitter users are shittier than Firstpost and Reddit users. Social Media is such a wonderful tool to exercise. And we use it for hate speech!

    Sad.

P.S. Before typing this shit, I posted a hate message on Twitter. Hypocrisy; it grows within!

  • SRK.. I promise never to watch your movies ever again. I don’t care about your religion.. But you are supporting your dumb friend Rahul Gandhi..

For those returning awards.. read this and shut up

There was once a man who was very embrassed about his Unemployed son. Once he announced that he will get food only if he earns Rs.100/- before he returns home.

His mother silently gave him the money and said, “Come in the evening and give it to your dad.”
The son came home and gave the money to his dad. The Dad said, “Do one thing, throw it in the dustbin,” and the son threw it. The man understood dat it was not earned by doing any hard work.
D next day, when his wife was away, d man sent his son away again, saying he can get back only after he earns Rs.100. Now the Useless Unemployed son had no option. He worked somewhere and earned Rs.100.

When he returned home, d man, as usual, asked him to throw it in the dustbin. D son refused to do it as he felt it was his Hard Earned money..

Disclaimer: This story is not meant to hurt those who are returning their Awards…!!!

  • illiterate guys can criticised any rather than doing anything good for any 1.
But that doesnt matter . he have the guts 2 say the truth and we love him for that.

  • @gj007… If a man can’t show tolerance towards people who don’t share the same status level as him.. isn’t that a form of intolerance too? Or is tolerance only about religion and caste? That in itself is hypocrisy.

SRK got drunk and bashed a weaker Shirish Kunder and made his wife apologise.. would he dare do the same to someone of his own status or above? Isn’t that a form of intolerance?

Why can’t Shirish Kunder bash Ra One? In a tolerant society, you need to have the balls to take it in your stride. Like SRK said about Anupam Kher in his interview.

I am seeing hypocrisy and ego in SRK’s statement now. Was a blind fan so far. But not at the cost of ruining the image of my country.

  • @Mohit

I think I grilled in too much of sarcasm in that comment. Basically I wanted to suggest that it is way too easy to talk about free speech, open mindedness when you’re not in question.

We all are hypocrites, my friend. Srk is a big man, hence all the hype.

About, returning the awards, well I won’t say anything because I’m not exactly aware of the situation. Thanks.

  • Everyone has its own views.srk just put forward his view on the subject.@mohit u r nt a true srk fan.if u wud be a true fan u wudnt say so.How cud u say tht because of his dislike for modi he is supporting those award returning ppl.if u dnt know him how can u say u r his fan.

  • SRK, we’ve tolerated movies like Happy New Year, Chennai Express, Ram Jaane, Asoka, Maya MemSaab etc, and you still call us an intolerant nation? ?
    (Only for fun, no offence)

  • I love Aamir and HR. But even if they give such statements I would never support it. What SRK said was wrong.

  • By giving back your awards, you are not only humiliating yourself, but also your families, your friends, your colleagues and your fans who supported you throughout your life and helped in fulfilment of your goal and all those awards.
This wasn’t expected from you, SRK.

  • I dont want to get in to all this stuff..as a srk fan i am not supporting his statement nor critisizing..but he has evry tight to talk about his own feeling and words..some may agree some may dont..it is bettr if film stars will avoid all stuff..every have there own choices..he alwys speak from his heart and mind..he dont bother about peoples thinking..thats the quality i want have in my own life..there are only few people like SRK ..alwys respect..

  • @mohit even i dnt agree on his award statement.
@sahil so srk will die if u will nt watch his movie.shut up u idiot!!!!seems u r a salman fan.u might hv,stopped, watching his movies since 2004 no need to tell the reason.and even 2-3 months before u might b knowing his comments on yakub.

  • I did not support Aamir with that whole AIB thingy, although there were some fair points raised by him.
But, this is utter bullshit on the part of SRK. I just can’t force myself to show empathy towards his statements, no matter how well he explains it.

  • I m diehard fan of Salman Khan but for d very first time I Salute “SHAHRUKH KHAN” from d core of my heart.. He spoke d ongoing truth of d nation.. I m an Indian.. I am not a hater of Modi even i really hate congress politics or so called Gandhi parivar politics..
Being an indian i Support SRK statements about d Growing intolerance in my beloved nation.. In Dadri incident all the culprits are BJP workers..I appeal to Our Honourable PM Mr. Modi that pls maintain d digniity & decorum of our beautiful country..

  • a very smart man SRK is the man with big gut …..salut to you Dr shah ruhk khan……i stand by you no matter what the criticism said and trash you you are the proud for india……and i am sure no body know who is the PM of india they just know about SRK?????

  • SRK IS STUPID PERSON HE IS AGAINST MODI BECAUSE HE IS SRK.SALMAN SAY THAT MODI IS GOOD MAN .SRK HAS NO RESPECT TOWARD INDIA PM

  • Yes the reaction against him shows that there is ‘ growing intolerance ‘ in country
Well I don’t support ‘ the act of returning awards’
But indicine have not mentioned it but many sites have published that srk said ‘ he will not return his award’

I don’t know why some idiot says that he is against modi
He has said nothing AGAINST government
He just have shared his views on maybe the support of students

    Group up
    I’ll minded peoples

  • I have watched his both the interviews with Barkha and Rajdeep and I must say that he has replied in extremely balanced manner…Yes, for intolerance point he told in the both the interviews that It is not the problem which revolved in India, but its a global issue bcz now a days we have so many mediums to react spontaneously…He did not even criticize anyone in the interviews..People generally go by headlines and react only by seeing the headline ,but not sure how many of us have watched his complete interview before thrashing him.. As soon as Rajdeep asked about vote bank politics he replied that I do not believe in any religious vote bank policy..which is the way to go future…Media asked such questions in the interview then he had to reply and he did it in a balanced way…I can blame Rajdeep and Barkha for asking him such questions which were not required as he was there to give interview about his birthday and life..not for commenting on intolerance or award returning…

@Mohit…bro..Do not be ashamed bcz u r his fan, just watch the whole interview , if u were his real fan then u will love him even more after watching the whole interview…
