Single Day Records of Hindi Films

Back in 2013, when we did a similar article, big films were crossing the 30 crore mark at the box office. But in the last couple of years, on a major holiday, 35 and 40 crore on a single day has now become possible.

Happy New Year and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo are the only two films that have crossed the 40 crore mark on a single day – which also happened to be the biggest day for film business in a year i.e the holiday for Diwali.

Back in the day, Hrithik Roshan’s Krrish was the first film to collect Rs 5 crore on a single day and Ghajini was the first film to go into double digits. 10 crore plus opening has now become ‘normal’ even for films featuring the young stars in the country. But back when Ghajini released, it was earth-shattering.

In 2010, Dabangg came and conquered the box office. For the next couple of years, Salman set the record with his Eid releases – Bodyguard became the first film to cross the 20 crore mark and within a year, Ek Tha Tiger smashed every box office record by becoming the first film to accumulate 30 crore on a single day.

Dhoom 3 did the unthinkable by collecting 35 crore plus on a non-holiday.

Single day milestones:

  • 5 crore – Krrish (Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra)
  • 10 crore – Ghajini (Aamir Khan, Asin)
  • 15 crores – Dabangg (Salman Khan, Sonakshi Sinha)
  • 20 crores – Bodyguard (Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor)
  • 25 crores – Ek Tha Tiger (Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif)
  • 30 crores – Ek Tha Tiger (Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif)
  • 35 crores – Krrish 3 (Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra)
  • 40 crores – Happy New Year (Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone)

In the next few years, it’ll be interesting to see which film will cross the 45 and 50 crore mark on a single day. 50 crore will truly be a massive achievement!

Read the article and comments of indicine team(link above) and see how Indicine is always biased when it comes to Akshay Kumar. In the article (link above) indicine placed Akshay below Hritik despite of Akshay having highest average per film , saying that his films are mostly multistarer , got advantage of post 2006 release and many more reasons.

I want to say if he got highest average you must place him 1st irrespective of how he got.He doesnt play supporting roles on those films.

If that is tha case then in your current ranking case , you have to mention that khan is on top because they get best release period advantage cause they not have bigger grosser on non holiday AND put salman above amir(3i and dhoom 3 multistarer ) and hritik above srk (coz he dont get big festive release like srk.)

  • 50 CR opening will happen in 2017 or in 2018 according to me . 5 CR opening took place in 2006 and 10 CR opening in 2008 . 20 CR in 2011 and 40 CR in 2014 so it might happen in 2017 . Only movie this year which has the chance to do 40 + is Sultan as it is releasing on Eid . Diwali will be divided between Shivaay and ADHM . Dangal can also open huge but Christmas falling on Sunday so Sultan has the best chance this year . 50 CR will be a benchmark in Indian Box Office . There was a time when lifetime collections were less than 50 CR but now we are looking towards 50 CR+ on the 1st day itself which is nothing but phenomenal .

  • Oh! Finally..Excellent article.. but I think Ra.one was the first to hit 25 crore mark..it’s official collections including all versions were 25.10 crore..
And I am not sure but I think kabhi khushi kabhi gham was the first to collect 2 crore on a single day..and main hoon na was the first to collect 3 crore on a single day..
About 4 crore I think either Veer Zaara or Fanaa achieved this milestone..m not sure again but it will definitely be between these 2 movies only..All I remember is that Shahrukh Khan smashed the all time opening weekend records with a hat trick of releases namely K3G,Main hoon na and Veer Zaara..

  • Watch out for 2 movies that ha e realistic chance of attaining 50 cr day 1.

2 movies with clash can still earn 30-35 .

    Yup you got me …

  • @indicine

Gheenti hamesha 1 se shuru hota hai…so it will be nice for history sake to know which film 1st collected 1 crore? Was it Mother India? Muhgle Azaam?

  • @Ally
You moron, 3 Idiots crossed Ghajin opening day by 3 crores and became the biggest opener of all time.

  • lol..officially the movie to cross 40Crs is HNY…and by trade or BOI no film has yet crossed 40Crs..
PRDP finished with 39.15Crs….please cross check once again SalmanFans :)

  • &Yuvraj: Aamir Has Only 1 Movie “Ghajini”.

    Check it Again.
    Now:
    1 – Salman
    2 – SRK
    3 – Hritik
    4 – Aamir

  • Salman leads and tops with 4 bandwidths barring HNY (if it is a real one). But Salman will be the first to give 50 crs opening probably in 2017 or 2018 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ma way home from nyt shift… Little traffic… while on wheels listening to JAANE KYOn…From dil chahta hai…..beats are just so superb.. lyrics too cool…whoever was d music composer for DCH….respect!!!!

  • Aamir in a commercial film with a holiday opening will surely repeat the Ghajini magic of 2008 for sure…!

After Dangal I hope he does do 1 more all out commercial entertainer.

  • @1:30pm

Whats the point in retrospective action coz everyone knows that when you first publish something then it sticks in peoples minds like MUD. For instance Roshans told the jaadoopurians that Jadoo 3 collected 244cr but left out the GROSS word but ever since then you kindergarteners believed that they meant 244cr nett….! Even if they now go back n say it is indeed 244cr gross you kids wont believe them…!

  • FAO all the illiterates-

Indicine said Dhoom 3 did the unthinkable by collecting 35cr on a non holiday- nowhere does it say it was the first to collect 35cr on any given day just pointing out that on a non holiday it collected 35cr…!

Pehle read karo then DIGEST n understand before coming out with ludicrous conclusions…!

  • Salman Khan ( king khan ) has 4 records –
    1. 15 crore of Dabangg ( 18.50 cr 3rd)day
    2. 20 crore of Bodyguard ( 21 cr 1st day
    3. 25 crore of Ek tha tiger
    4. 30 crore of Ek th a tiger

While bloody aamir has only two
    1. 10 crore of ghajini
    2. 35 crore of dhoom3
(Krishh3 don’t collected 35.91 on fourth day fake collections , krishh3 real collections are 187 crore not 244 crore) Also Salman box office king

  • @Navin uncle:
Indicine had earlier placed Dhoom 3 in place of K3 in the list. There were no mentions about K3. After getting to know about the mistake through comment section, the edited the article again.

  • This stupid, bhojpuri, pseudointellectual, coward, hypocritical uncle thinks he is the only intelligent fellow over here and all others are fool.

Dear uncle, don’t waste your time over here and go and learn some perFaketion to to write script for Humshakals 2!

  • There is some similarities between Anil Kapoor and uncle. Both of them don’t go older, but in different aspects! The former will continue looking as younger as a guy of 30 years where as the latter continue behaving like a child of 8 years.

  • @Navin

How is it gross dude..? Coz the daily collections was given by producers for Krrish 3 and it added upto 244 cr…it was indeed NETT not Gross…and Hrithik and Rakesh had confirmed officially that Krrish 3 indeed collected 244 cr nett during the controversy when the stupid BOI was trying to pull the film down from the beginning coz it knew it had the potential to break CE record. Now you tell me who will have the proper numbers? Will it be Rakesh who gets the DCR (Daily collection report) from Distributors from all areas (he said the same during that time) or BOI who just gets figures from only some chains in few cities and then assumes the trend accordingly and publishes a figure?

Everywhere it is the producers figure that all the websites publishes…be it whichever film industry in the world…why would someone even give a damn about BOI figures as it is easily understood from first Krrish 3 and then Bang Bang that they have a personal vendetta against Hrithik? You might have also seen a list published by them in Jan or Feb this year about ‘Most anticipated movies of 2016’ where they even mentioned ‘flying jatt’ but didn’t even mention about Mohenjo daro which according to all other trade websites is one of the top anticipated movies of this year?

And for the people who believes the BOI morons and says Krrish 3’s collections are fudged by FilmKraft what they have to tell about BangBang!? It was produced by FoxStar and even then BOI under-reported it as 141cr when FoxStar’s official domestic nett was 181cr..?

    Another example for you:-

    – First BOI said Krrish 3 collected 31.5 cr on Diwali day (which was 4.41 cr less than official figure)

    Link:- http://web.archive.org/web/20131108181355/http://www.boxofficeindia.com/boxnewsdetail.php?page=shownews&articleid=6212&nCat=

Then when Bhajrangi Bhaijan released and collected 25cr on its first Monday…they posted like this:-

“BB collected 25cr nett on first Monday, it will be the highest Monday of all time outside Krrish 3 which grossed 29 cr nett on a national holiday in 2013”

from 35.9cr (producer) to 31.5cr (their first report) and then later to 29cr (during the time of BB)…How about that?

Moreover many people has pointed out their treatment of the verdict of Jodhaa Akbar. The put it Super hit initially then changed the verdict to semi-hit.

C’mon guys, even a kindergarten kid can understand the motives of BOI towards Hrithik…and I am expecting the same thing for Mohenjo Daro as well…just wait and watch…
