Shweta Basu Prasad challenges the media through open letter

Shweta Basu Prasad, who played the lead role in films like Iqbal and Makdee, was allegedly caught in a prostitution scandal, a few months ago. Criticising the media for releasing fake statements, the actress has challenged reporters to prove their allegations and also name the businessman who was involved in the scandal

Dear Members of Media,

I grew up admiring some great journalists and reporters who, some times report even live from war-torn borders, natural disaster sites, terror attacked locations, etc. without hesitating a bit. These heroes inspired me to pursue my degree in Mass Media and Journalism degree too. I always thought, ‘Wow! These guys, the media, actually risk their lives to bring us the truth’. And boom! You create a mess in my very life. Well done.

I understand that everything was a chain of reaction and versions of the incident with several mis-leading stories were picked up along with my………..wait, NOT MY ‘statement!’, which said:

“I have made wrong choices in my career, and I was out of money. I had to support my family and some other good causes. All doors were closed, and some people encouraged me to get into prostitution to earn money. I was helpless, and with no option left to choose, I got involved in this act. I am not the only one who faced this problem, and there are several other heroines who have gone through this phase.”

Seriously?? Whoever you are, who imagined this statement, were you smoking funny cigarettes at work? Who talks like that? This sounds like a dialogue from some 80s Bollywood film. And why so many ‘and’ in that statement, go back to school amateur!

Thankfully my family, my friends and my circle of people didn’t believe this statement. They know I do not speak like that. But, for the rest of India or anyone, anywhere on planet, for the last time: THIS IS NOT MY STATEMENT!

The problem with our society is, as long as I was given sympathy and everyone went ‘awwww’, ‘poor girl’, ‘so sad’ and so on, everybody was supporting me. But, as soon as people understand that they got carried away by a false statement and a girl of 23 can be strong and can stand on her own feet without any sympathies, the society feels that she is lying?? What’s my fault if the news were the way they were? I cannot force anyone to like or respect me. These happen naturally. What happened was beyond my control.

After my detainment, I went straight to the rescue home where I stayed for 59 and a half days. (60th day, I came home), then where and how did I give a statement to media? My phone was confiscated, I made few last calls to Maa and few other close friends. I had absolutely no access to newspapers, television, internet or radio for those 2 months. I had no clue what was going on outside Prajwala rescue home, Mehboob Nagar (outskirts of Hyderabad). Although I had a lovely time there teaching kids Hindi, English and Hindustani Classical vocals. I always do and I always will count those children in my prayers. I also read 12 books in those 2 months. Yes 12. Spent my time very productively.

But, after I came back home in Mumbai on 30th October 2014, I came across all the reports that had been around for those 2 months when I was absent and I was more amused than disappointed!

A report also said that ‘the cops’ said I gave that ‘statement’, which was denied by the Police in Hyderabad when I confronted them. One of the Police said, that no press notes were released by the department of Police, Hyderabad, of any such statement made by me. And anyway, Police is not allowed to reveal identity in such cases, so it was not possible by them to reveal any such statement. It’s against the law. And how could they, firstly this statement does not exist. I was absent in the scene and that was an advantage for it to do the rounds.

And who are these business men in my life? I am just as curious as all of you!

So, here is the riddle: Why were the business men names who were caught ‘along with me’ not revealed?

Clue: Were there any business men with me in that room at the time of detainment in the first place?

Think Think.

PROVE IT!

I was in Hyderabad for Santhosham Awards, which was conducted on 30th August. I was never encouraged to get into commercial sex and no agent booked my tickets and stay there! My tickets and accommodation was done by the award event organizers. The hotel where I stayed with other guests of the award ceremony was a hospitality partner with the event. I still have the itinerary in my email inbox.

My parents did not want me to act after Iqbal (2005). My parents’ bigger concern was me passing my 10th and 12th grade properly and not jumping into movies at 16! We don’t dine at Wasabi every other weekend but that doesn’t mean my parents have not done enough to bring me up well. I had the best possible education, birthday gifts, family vacations, sports clubs for playing a sport and enrolment at Music Institute for learning music (I learn The Sitar from Sangit Mahabharati, Juhu, Mumbai), everything that a normal upper-middle class parents can do.

I did few south films (Telugu and Tamil) when I was about 18 and then past 3 and half years I had been busy making a documentary film called Roots on Indian Classical music, starring interviews of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pt. Shiv Kumar Sharma, Shubha Mudgal, A R Rahman, Vishal Bhardwaj, Dr. L. Subramaniam, Pt. Hari Prasad Chaurasia to name a few. In fact, in June 2014 along with a friend (Adhiraj Bose), I also co-produced and acted in a 12 minute short film named INT. CAFÉ NIGHT. This short film starred myself along with Shernaz Patel, Naseeruddin Shah and Naveen Kasturia, which is doing rounds of film festivals right now. I have been auditioning for acting assignments as well. So what ‘doors’ were closed? Please get your facts right before jumping into conclusions!

However, on 5th December 2014 the Metropolitan Sessions Court, Nampally, Hyderabad, gave me clean chit in the case and withdrew the charges and stay order against me made by the trial court. To all those who supported me through out all this, thank you so much, extending a big hug to all of you.

Anyway, enough said, enough heard. I have completely gone past the whole incident and I overlook everyone who picked up false statement(s) and encouraged mis-leading stories without verifying it’s authenticity. I overlook, because this episode does not deserve any more attention!

  • so the case of prostitution against her was fake!!!unfortunately this clean chit news made much lesser news in media than the news of her arrest for prostitution

  • What is she trying to say? The statement by media was false or the whole accusation against her was false? The letter doesnt clear anything.

  • okay Shwetha.
my question is ” then why where you caught in the first place, if you were so against Commercial sex? “

  • I believe u from ur statements itz pretty understandable that ur desperate to prove that ur innocent
media always luks for tiz kind of things has people r more intrstd in tiz kind of news
nice biography if rgv sees tiz then he vl make a movie

  • But she was also caught in a similar scandal in a sting operation carried out by a media channel in Hyderabad!
I feel this is a part of the process of image rebuilding.
Whatsoever, it is none of my business! Wish she flourish again!

  • Where is the morale of journalism?

Will the press issue a statement denying this statment by Shweta?

We all know that the glamour and movie world is not like it is shown on the screen, but, then who is completely pure in this world? There is dark and good side for everyone.

I want Shweta to file a suit that runs in to crores of rupees in compensation, if she believes and know that these were false statement, against these newspapers or media that put those stories.. Until unless an example is set nothing will happen.

    today shweta, tomorrow someone else.

if the press and media were untrue they need to be booked.

  • Media should stop doing this. Stop making false reports, and we should stop believing in such things without facts

  • @gj007 is insensitive towards everyone. this is not d first time he has said such things. in past he has passed insensitive comments towards chetan bhagat, arjun kapoor and now sweta prasad

  • I do believe that there r some actresses who r willing to do anything just to grab roles mostly at the beginning of their carreer to cement their position

  • @gj007, you need to have asked this when media published the news on her arrest?

If they can publish their side of story, why not her side of story?

  • @Indicine – How can u come to conclusion that media has made false accusation against her??? Just that she released a open letter to all India media??? Or else for her CLEAN CHIT given by Sessions Court???

Anyway I’m least concerned abt sum1 personal issue bt couldn’t take commenting on media…

  • @ARJUN KAPOOR

Thanks buddy for calling me insensitive. But if you’re willing to at least here my side of argument kindly read this:

The fact of the matter is, you dont know who is wrong. She has her side to make, I have my view point. Am I abusing her? No. The problem here is, how will we ever understand the truth.

And I have a very strong case to make. My cousin graduated from a top-notch medical college in Mumbai. He was doing his internship in a high-profile hospital where Bollywood biggies take their medical treatment. A very popular heroine (without naming her) came to this hospital for abortion. The doctor told my cousin that this was her 3rd abortion. She wasn’t even married back then.

Let’s be frank here. Whom are we fooling? May be there are few heroines here who have climbed the ladder purely on merit, but we know a host of others are here either due to nepotism or ‘favors from biggies’

    @Indicine:

I still apologize if you found my comments insensitive, but Shweta will always try to defend her stance through emotional manipulation. May be she is right. May be not. I have high regards for media because though I often call TOI as trash, it was the same newspaper which delivered justice to a rape victim in Banda. This girl was given justice against a powerful MLA thanks to media intervention.

The whole point of my argument is, why is media always blamed? It’s a soft target. There are media houses who might do this, but there is always a good side.

And we all know how effective our judicial system is. So I have my point of view and you have yours. Still you want to judge me. Go on, I won’t stop you.

    • @gj007, whether she was involved in the prostitution scandal or not, is not the point here. The media is being criticised for two reasons. One, they published a false statement which she never gave. Two, they didn’t reveal the name of the businessman who was involved in the scandal. Shouldn’t his name be revealed too?

  • @JC

Those stories were published by some media houses to get negative publicity. Just like Firstpost which does this on daily basis. By giving them importance we are only making them stronger. If Shweta is faithful to herself she shouldn’t care about the world.

Even Dr.Kalam and Ratan Tata are criticized on daily basis where most arguments against them are baseless. The moment an innocent person hits out on such atrocious news, he gets blamed as, “You’re guilty so you reacted.” That’s exactly what has happened with Shweta. Her resistance shall harm her not media.

  • It’s so sad that the media acts so irresponsible at times. They need to understand that somebody’s reputation is at stake.I remember when the news broke out she had faced so much of criticism despite being innocent

  • @GJ007.. reveal the name or stop posting fake stories!! My famous cousin doctor who has aborted a heroine three times. You are just using an alias // nickname here.. reveal the name so that we all know who this big heroine is..

You are accusing actresses of lying.. but you can’t speak the truth???? All our actresses are educated enough to use protection. Don’t think they are stupid enough to repeat the same mistake thrice. I challenge you to reveal the name…. If its really true, you can’t be scared!!!

  • @Indicine

I gave my comments to JC here.

Agreed, I was wrong with my first claim. I’m nobody to tell you what to publish, but by reacting against such media houses, she has made them stronger.

What you are talking is the ideal situation. But if they give the name of businessman, then this wont be a “masala news” which a part of Media what to sell. They were wrong and will always be wrong. But if we keep reacting against them they’ll attack us even more brutally.

Remember how TOI in their Bombay Times literally thrashed Deepika? Because DP had paid heed to their trash and TOI’s aim was to create a gimmick out of nowhere by dehumanizing DP. Sadly, media is too powerful to withstand. Ignorance is the only legitimate solution according to me.

  • @gj007 dont take this criticism of urs so emotionally.v r here to hv fun.I knw u r a gd guy who unfortunately often gives stupid opinions.anyways I njoy reading ur cmnts

  • I cn’t understand even when i giv a wel statement indicine doesn’t show it ? Cn any1 tel whats the reason. Become sick of this site only just fr reading sometime.

  • @Neeraj.
if you want a name I will give you one.
    Kareena Kapoor Khan.
And don’t think actresses are matured enough to know about precautions and won’t commit the same mistake thrice.
some people don’t like using protection. everyone has their own preferences.

  • @gj007, appreciate your thoughts, but unless someone comes up against them, how will things be evened out? Someone has to take that broom in the hand.

I know media is powerful and all, but then all powerful people were dismantled by small movements by little known people that were first unnoticed.

I don’t know whether Shweta will go the distance of filing a suit to claim damages, but if she does, it will be a good move against such journos who use media for all the wrong reasons.

  • @gj 007. Rofl. Dude I too am a doctor. We are guided by principle called medical ethics and etiquette. And abortion comes in to category where in the doc can’t disclose the details and u say he said it Ur cousin. Ha ha ha ha.
My sincere advice. Don’t try to fake things just to garner some cheap publicity.
And u know what’s the punishment for that to a doctor or I guess Ur cousin forgot to tell u that. Its penal erasure. Do u know what that means. Its nothing but u can’t practice any more.
So before all this tell Ur cousin to do what he is suppose to do and that’s study for pg entrance exams which are not easy nut to crack

  • @Gj007, so basically what you are saying is she has to ignore about all that stuff. man how can she??
When you’re attacked on media, it can feel like the community has already made its mind up about you until you can prove your innocence so she did that and proved. hope people change their mind about her now.

Secondly, Can’t she sue for defamation?

when someone makes a false statement of fact to someone else that harmed your reputation, the typical remedy would be to sue that person for defamation or slander. so she has right to sue those who wrote false statement of her.

And about media. I learned at an early age, “Don’t believe anything you hear, and only half of what you see.” , social media falls into the second category, but I do ‘share’ without very much concern about truth, or lies. Until I can prove it, it isn’t a truth to me.

  • Im ashame of so call open letter by shweta is a free world do what suit you no have d right 2 question ur morale.even if d story is true
