Shahid Kapoor’s disappointing box office run continues

Shahid Kapoor’s disappointing run at the box office continues with the disastrous performance of his latest film ‘Rangoon’. Unless there’s a miraculous turnaround, the fate of Vishal Bhardwaj’s film has been sealed due to the poor opening and occupancy remaining at extremely low levels today.

A lot of stars have come and gone, but it’s Shahid’s career that has been arguably one of the biggest disappointments. Right from the time he made his debut in ‘Ishq Vishq’, there was hope within the industry that Shahid, given the talent that he showcased in his very first film, would go on to become a big star.

That hope was renewed when ‘Vivaah’ and ‘Jab We Met’ released in quick succession and did well at the box office. But all that changed the day Shahid met Vishal Bhardwaj. A director who gave him the opportunity to showcase his acting histrionics in films that noone watched.

The problem lies in the mindset.

Here’s what Shahid said in an interview recently:

Vishal Bhardwaj is the most relevant film maker I have worked with in my acting career. He has given me opportunities to showcase my acting talent in a way that probably even I didn’t know. Working with him has always been special and everybody in this industry wants to work with him.

I think this film (Rangoon) can be watched by a wider section of audience in comparison to Haider and Udta Punjab because this isn’t a dark film, rather it is dramatic.

Box Office numbers are very weird. There are people who do credible work and Box-Office numbers follow them and then there are people who have lot of Box Office number but two years down the line people forget them. Box Office numbers are very important but you should not run after it. You should run after wanting to be a part of a good movie.

We are in a state of flux right now because the industry is going through a change. I strongly feel that there is a lot of change coming our way and what we think of it as commercial won’t work anymore. I think content is king and it will drive the viewer into the theatre. Whoever offers the audiences a better experience, will always be the first choice. As an actor, it is our duty to offer something new and different which is in an unchartered territory. I don’t think we are in a time when people will go to the theatre to watch a particular star flex his muscles. An actor will be a star when he makes the right choices.

For an actor who believes only ‘right choices’ can make an actor a star, has Shahid ever questioned himself, why, inspite of being in the industry for 14 years, he hasn’t yet attained stardom. Why actors like Varun Dhawan or Ranbir Kapoor, who have also opted for a few niche films like ‘Badlapur’ or ‘Barfi’, have been able to carry those films? And even when they didn’t (Ranbir has had his share of failures), have only gone on to work in bigger films and bigger directors? Does he realise that commercial cinema is not all about a “particular star flexing his muscles”? Does he realise that box office numbers also means people are paying their hard earned money to watch films, and the lack of collections in the first weekend also shows that people aren’t interested in the films that he is making for them?

Everyone in the trade, bar none, knew Rangoon wouldn’t work. But for an actor with nearly 2 decades of experience behind him, to think a film like Rangoon would reach out to a larger section of the audience and to believe that every actor in the industry wants to work with Vishal Bhardwaj – shows the massive disconnect between his thought process and what the audience actually seek from films, which is entertainment.

It does not matter how you entertain, you could do it through a film like Vicky Donor or Barfi or Dangal or Kaabil, but having elements of entertainment is the key for films to succeed and reach out to a larger section of the audience.

A distributor recently told us, a large section of audience in smaller centres do not even recognise or remember Shahid Kapoor by his name. They only know him as the ‘R.. Rajkumar’ or ‘Vivah’ star. For an actor who possesses every talent essential to become a major star, Shahid’s career is a tragedy.

He still has time, opportunities could still come from better and more commercial directors, but until he realises that there’s an audience beyond social media and those critics that hail his films, things are unlikely to improve.

  • feeling sad for him, and btw indicine he is enough populer in smaller town, and my gf says me that I’m look alike shahid kapoor :p ..feeling really bad for him

  • @indicine- while i agree with some of the things in the article, i also think that you and many people in the comment section are being a little too harsh on him. He doesn’t owe anything to anyone, its his career and his choices, he is making choices according to his own sensibilities and the kind of movies that he wants to be a part of. Having said that , i agree that he should keep the commercial aspect in mind as well, He is a talented guy and i am sure he will fulfill his potential.

  • Actually today every unsuccessful actor talks about quality of cinema and say that Box Office is not important, but reality is today Box Office is the only way to test the quality of cinema and BB, Dangal, Sultan, PK, BM, 3 Idiot are the best examples of this……Sidhi Baat if movie is good then public will come out in big number to watch it, which means huge Box Office Collection…..

  • shahid is flop superstar he wanted to become like srk but today he has become abhishek bachchan post post post it post post post post post it

  • an arthouse cinemea should have elements of realistic entertainment or no one will connect with it, Dangal was realistic as well as emotionally engaging and entertaining, if dangal turned out to be a slow and documentary format, no one would connect with it. Hollywood also does it in a same format, movies that are offbeat have some amount of entertainment in it. Entertainment doesn’t have to be unrealistic, it can be produced in an engaging emotional way.

  • the reason dhobi ghat and raakh didn’t work for the same reasons I’ve explained. it’s basically taking mick out of the audience who will spend their hard earned money to go and watch slow and musicless movie, that is unforgivable, movies are not made to bore the audience.

  • Can’t believe I was Shahid’s huge fan few years back?

It’s his b’day today.. You could have at least spared him today Indicine??

    • @Suhas, the box office outcome of Rangoon will hurt him more than any article on the internet. It’s sad when anyone puts a year of his / her life into a wrong film and not even 10 people turn up at a theatre to watch it. It’s like a theatre artist performing in front of an empty hall.

  • Today on his birthday i read in DNA that before his next birthday shahid kapoor said he wants to deliver a blockbuster hit..now who will explain him that for delivering a blockbuster hit he needs to do a film which has ingredients of a blockbuster..He rejected a film like Yeh Jawani hai deewani and does films like Phata poster nikla hero and R Rajkumar instead..he himself dosent care about his career and seems like he is not interested in becoming a superstar..he is going to fade away very soon

  • remove haider kaminey udta from Shahid’s career & he would hv lost his relevance in the industry as well as among audience. The big critical acclaim as well as decent bo these 3 films achieved is the reason y u wrote such an article on Shahid’s birthday & not on other talented but underachieved stars like Emraan , John , Ritesh etc

And it’s a shame u didn’t write even a singles line abt his commercial or safe films that failed at d bo like Phata Poster, Mausam, KismatKonnection & remember R Rajkumar has exactly d same bo verdict as Haider/Kaminey i e- Semi hit

    So overall a pathetic article
    Disappointed

  • @shailaj the people and indicine here are a bit harsh because talented person like Shahid deserve more success and it really hurts when talent like this gets wasted.. and one day they’ll vanish.. People never felt bad about Imran khan because he never had enuuf talent.

  • I wasn’t expecting a reply from Team Indicine.. So that’s my 2nd time and it’s without ever asking a question in your live Q&A session.. Apni toh life ban gayi?

But I would love to see you replying to more users in comments.. Many accuse you of being biased etc. and they seem to have taken you for granted.. It’s your website, sab ki band bajao

Coming back to Shahid couldn’t agree more? Like that popular trade website also said ‘Shahid has lost whatever following he had with the youth.’ Sad to say I am one of them

  • He is one of d finest actors who can draw the simulation between commercial cinema with acting capabilities… But failed…dont know why… May be his bad choices or viewers faults … But I always loved his performances…

  • Don’t you think that the same goes with Saif as well. Had Hum Tum, Salaam Namastey, Cocktail and Love Aaj Kal to name a few in his list of solo hits. His movies haven’t done any good in the recent past either. Quite a similar career to that of Shahid # Where talent doesn’t meet its destination.

  • why indicine is only pointing out shahid and criticising him so harshly there are a lot of actors of his time like john abraham, abhishek, riteish and few others i think shahid is bigger than them atleast he can acand on its basis he could go on for a long time like rishi kapoor naseeruddin shah om puri….what kind of lame article was that if someone is interested in niche films u should respect his choices,,, its just a matter of 1 film that will click his audience and u indicine will feel guilty of your article….he has won awards for best actor 2 years ago only for christ sake..

  • Amd also a point to be noted that except for hritik no actor who started his career after 2000 has been successful in the storm of three khans actors at the time of their launch are considered the next big thing but sloely they gets fade away.. Ranbir with so much immense talent could not convert into garnering stardom outside some cities no one knows him all are confused between him and ranveer i think girls are more popular than them like anushka deepika aalia shraddha

  • Why is there so much hate for Shahid? He is in the industry for 14 years, that means he has potential. If he wasn’t talented, he would be over long ago. I can’t imagine Haider or Kaminey or Udta Punjab with another actor… Even after all his flops, directors still cast him because of his talent. The problem is that he is doing movies that only a part of the audience likes and never for all of them. That’s why his movies don’t work. No matter what you guys say, he is a star because he is still doing movies and acts soooo perfectly after sooo many years!

  • But i still believe that shahid if he chooses low budget niche thrillers with likes of neeraj pandey or others than he can become a star after 10 years. Like our greedy gobar who struggled for 25 years to become a star and thanks to neeraj pandey, he is giving some hits with low budget than imagine what could a better and more talented actor like shahid can do? P.S. our greedy gobar bankrupted more than 90 producers in his mediocre floppy career. At least shihid only bankrupted around 20 or so.

  • @Farhad dont act oversmart. We also have long list of craps that sinked badly at box office from day one itself such as marigold, main aur mrs khanna, god tussi great ho, phir milenge, swadesh, paheli, billu barber, yeh lumhe judaai ke, tumko na bhool paayenge, khamoshi, baabul, salaam e ishq, london dreams, jaan e mann, josh, guddu, oh darling yeh hai india, koyla, chaahat, bombay valvet, guzaarish, aakrosh, 8× 10 tasveer and list goes on.

  • Indicine team: why are u trying to trash Shahid Kapoor for his performance in Rangoon?!!!! So unfair and it shows how biased you are!! his performance was so good and did NOT lack anything, unless you didn’t have the eyes to see his performance in this film.. or probably you didn’t even watch it but u copy what other stupid ppl would write on their sites and do not know how to value some good films and good performance.. why trying to “discredit” a quality film? In fact this film is much more entertaining than his film which was a hit and won the best film award years back ( Omkara).. which I loved but many ppl did not because it was – for them – a slow boring film. This one in fact a full entertaining film.
