Rangoon Business Economics: Case of costs failing a film before release

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon is a classic case of economics giving the film absolutely no chance to recover costs at the box office. Even if Rangoon turned out to be a fairly good film, it would still be a flop. What it needed was extraordinary content and growth that matched films like ‘Piku’, which sadly isn’t going to be the case.

The film could be this February’s ‘Fitoor’ – which was made on slightly lower costs, but opened to even poorer numbers and was a major disaster at the box office. While it’s too early to write a film off on the second day of the release, a low first day total means it needs nothing short of a miracle from here – more so since growth in business hasn’t really come on Saturday. Some places have in fact shown drops from Friday.

The problem is not really the film here, but the fact that directors like Vishal Bhardwaj are given the budget and canvas to make films as big as this. Ideally, he should be casting non-stars who charge a much lesser acting-fee and the film should be made within a budget of 15-20 crore.

For example, a film like Badlapur, even though it had a more bankable star, would still fail if it was made on a budget of 80 crore. It went on to become a hit because the actor charged less and the film was made within a realistic budget for its genre (27 crore including print and marketing).

With Rangoon, it’ll be a struggle to even recover the marketing expenses from theatrical business – let alone the hefty acting fee.

Sajid Nadiadwala makes a profit out of Rangoon, but Viacom18 could end up losing more than 40 crore of its investment. This would put a lot of pressure on their big film this year – Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati which is possibly the most expensive film ever made in the industry.

Rangoon Business Economics breakdown (Note: All figures as per trade sources)

  • INDICINE When You Post Such Numbers Dont You Think No 1 Is That Stupid To Invest 80CR in A Vishal Bhardwaj Movie Where Every1 Knows The Contant will B Dark ,And expecting To B Just AVG It Will require 110 CR Is a Stupidity ? Producer Must Have Thought Something ? Or The Catch Is too HArd To Understand .!

  • Some director only work with low budget.. Producer should understand that how much should invest on product or some director.. Same went wrong to BV ..for me even SLB is also risky director his movies alwys have huge budget and when he fails to deliver something good the result always disaster. But good thing is when he deliver movies do wonders..but director like bhardwaj should work on low budget only because their product dosent have wide apeal.. May be they are better director dn rohit shetty and farah khan ye comparison is not fair but still .. But if you compare even farah khan dosent have box office flop.

  • Feeling sad for Shahid. The guy could have been in the top 5 had he picked films wisely. I don’t blame Shahid for choosing a film like Rangoon, which could go on to be a cult classic in a few years. But he could have avoided movies like Shaandar and Teri Meri Kahani which did nothing but waste his talent. Saif Ali Khan has no chance of regaining a leading man status he once upon a time had. No body gives a shit about Kanagana.

  • All 3 actors in this crapfest are overhyped by the jobless kritiks… none deserved any awards they have fraudulently won in their careers so far. Time for all 3 to retire gracefully n let the next generation in.

  • SLB kickout panauti Shahid from Padmavati else you will doom. Deepika’s luck will not be able to save you this time.

  • Is there any other status much lower than disaster status..as langooon gas surpassed all expectations of how a film can be so big disaster . It will earn max.25 crores .still it will fell short of becoming a flop by atleast 30 crores. …1st film to get the tag of getting .epic epic mega gigantic super disaster status….new term and status will be coined for langooon.

  • Ok guys I know this movie will be maha disaster but will all know SK having bad phase but first of all we thought this movie is all about war not stupid love triangle but it’s ok

But I have faith in SK that he will do good in padamavati
