  • Never planned ‘Shanghai’ to be a blockbuster: Dibakar Banerjee

Dibakar Banerjee’s ‘Shanghai’ has broken even and the director says his aim was to create a profit-making venture and not a blockbuster.

“‘Shanghai’ was never made to be the blockbuster of the year. We never thought even this would happen. We spent Rs 12 crore in the making and Rs 8 crore in the marketing. From Monday, we have been making profits. This was our aim and we have done it,” he told reporters Tuesday at Juhu PVR here.
Released Friday, ‘Shanghai’ had a slow start but picked up during the weekend. It opened with Rs 3.2 core earnings on the first day and the collection went up by 30 percent Saturday and 35 percent Sunday.
Never planned ‘Shanghai’ to be a blockbuster: Dibakar Banerjee
On Monday, the film’s performance at the box office has been strong. The film is topical as it focuses on the corruption in the political system and performances by Prosenjit Chatterjee, Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Kali Koechlin have made it an interesting watch.
Talking about appreciation he has received from people, Banerjee said: “I have got 200 texts from people in the industry, my college, school, neighbourhood and all. They loved the film and really got the film.
“The film has impacted people regardless of the fact whether they are actors or normal people like us. There are a lot of people who have not liked the film, which is good. If a film polarises people and if they are talking about it, then it can’t be ignored.”
Dibakar also thanked the media and said that 50 percent publicity of ‘Shanghai’ was done through media.
“I want to thank the media. The media supported us and that’s why we have done so well. Other films should be jealous of us,” he added.

  • Rowdy Rathore is simply outstanding, pure, wholesome, true Indian
full blown entertainer at its best. Rowdy Rathore is a tribute to the larger than life Indian Action Movies and is absolutely entertaining. Any Indian cinema goer who appreciates entertaining movies will love this movie whoever he or she is a fan of. It is an ode to Indian commercial movies and heroism which we all Indians love, and Prabhudeva with his direction an Akshay Kumar with his histrionics pull of this cult entertainer.

Akshay Kumar excels in both the tapori chor Shiva’s role and is splendid as ASP Vikram Rathore. He carries the movie on his strong shoulders with the able direction of Prabhudeva. Sonakshi looks pretty and emotes well. The child actor is good. The villian Naseer and his authentic rural accent is superb, and location is apt.
The movie has not one or two but four good songs. Pritam pyare, Chinta chinta, Dhadang Dadang, Chel Chebeli. The cinematography is okay. But the highlight of the movie are its fights and action choreography . It is executed very well and the audience loves it.
The audience were going berserk and I loved the movie… It is awesome, outstanding Indian Kitsch Cinema at its best. Rowdy Rathore roars and how….. Some movies go beyond its superstars..This is one such movie any one will like irrespective of the fact whether he is a fan of Akshay or not.
A lot of critics liked the movie and gave good honest reviews. Really appreciate it.

A stupendous film. It is a must watch for all hindi film lovers. It has everything that we have enjoyed in the last 40 years of hindi cinema like double role, dances, fights, songs, romance and suspense. It is a tribute to hindi cinema as we have loved it in the past, but to adapt it to todays day and age. Hats off to the south indian script and story and Prabhudeva’s direction. This film has been accepted by audiences all over India and even abroad, Akshay Kumar in the double role is outstanding and if he does not win and award for this film then there is no meaning in awards. He is a treat to watch as both the road side small time thief and also the tough and disciplined cop. He carries the film on his shoulders. He is marvelous in comedy as always, fantastic in the action scenes, dramatic scenes as the tough cop and par excellence in the emotional scenes with the child. Blockbuster.
