Rangoon Box Office Collections: Mega Disaster

Vishal Bhardwaj’s Rangoon is the biggest disaster so far this year and one of the biggest loss-making films the industry has ever seen. It joins the list of mega-disasters like Fitoor and Mirzya – films that had landing costs in excess of 60 crore, but failed to even recover release and marketing expenses from theatrical business.

Bombay Velvet is probably the only film that had landing costs in excess of 100 crore and finished with a dismal domestic distributor’s share of less than 12 crore. The share of Rangoon will be around 20% lower than Bombay Velvet.

These are shocking numbers for a film that features arguably three of the most talented actors, under a director who is known to extract the best out of them. It’s also a black mark on a producer like Sajid Nadiadwala, whose sensibilities are different, yet he decided to produce a film like Rangoon. His track-record is consistent, one of the best for a individual producer, but Rangoon is the biggest disaster of his career as producer. Even though he made a clean-profit by selling the rights of Rangoon to Viacom, it’s difficult to understand the decision behind him taking on a project like this to produce.

For Viacom18, it’s films like these that can make irrecoverable damage. They will suffer losses of around 50 crore, which could’ve been used to fund better and more commercial films. For example, ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ and ‘Half Girlfriend’ can be squeezed into the budget that Rangoon was made on.

It’s precious money that the industry is losing, because 5-6 major flops combined do not suffer the kind of losses that a film like Rangoon has. This would put tremendous pressure on a big-budget film like ‘Padmavati’.

Rangoon is also a reality check for Kangana Ranaut, who demands 10-12 crore for a film, but does not deserve even 25% of that. She has also been constantly making comparisons between herself and the Khans, who have dominated the industry for 3 decades. Tanu Weds Manu Returns aside, she’s had mega-failures like Katti Batti, I Love NY, Revolver Rani etc. When her films have failed, they’ve failed big. It’s about a good director, good storyline along with her acting-skills that made Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Queen big hits. It’s not her stardom, but content and the low budget of those films that made them successful at the box office.

Check out the day-wise collections of Rangoon

  • Friday – 4.9 crore
  • Saturday – 4.75 crore
  • Sunday – 4.25 crore (approx)
  • Total - 13.95 crore

Note: The figures are our estimates, the producers have stopped giving out numbers.

  • Rangoon is a massive failure . Rangoon is the 6th consecutive failure for Saif after Go Goa Gone, Bullett Raja, Humshakals, Happy Ending and Phantom . A film like Kaabil starring Hrithik had less budget as compared to Rangoon and even Jolly LLB 2 has been made on a less budget as compared to Rangoon . Apart from stardom and content economics also play a very important role . This is a major setback for Kangana as she had no release in 2016 . Her next film is Simran which is a women oriented film directed by Hansal Mehta who is not known for making commercial films . !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @indicine, how in the god’s name do you know that kangana demanded 12cr for a film? I mean, who told you? Producer, casting director, kangana’s manager, who? For websites like you, yesterday’s Koffee with Karan’s episode was dedicated with guests like Kabir khan, imtiyaz ali and zoya akhtar. You start bashing a star when his/her movies fail, and start hailong new mantras when their movies make money.

Just in case, if Rangoon collected 40cr, you would have written that kangana is no lesser star and she is a rebel in bollywood indistry blah blah..

You are a medium through which people read and believe news. Dont just be a gossip monger. Be responsible or at least try being one.

    • @django, we do not write any gossip out here. Everything you read is from reliable sources. News in the industry spreads quickly and people in the trade get to know when someone quotes absurd amount, much higher than their market value.

  • shahid should do movies like r rajkumar with established directors like prabhudeva, rohit shetty otherwise there is no chance for him to survive in bollywood

  • A request to you Indicine please post an article about biggest disasters of bollywood at least top 10. A big request from heart

  • Saif and shahid are much bigger stars than kangana. Their bad solo films open higher than kanganas good solo films. Saif will come back strong soon. Shahid also has good films in list

  • These are shocking numbers for a film that features arguably three of the most talented actors, Lol 3 only shahid is talented kangana and saif are flop actors

  • Firstly, to say that a ‘ badrinath ki dulhania’ and ‘ half girlfriend ‘ can be squeezed into Rangoon’s budget is such a regressive statement to make, Indicine. So you want the industry you’re representing to make the same films again and again, with the same backdrops, and make Indian cinema all about money. ‘ Commercial ‘ is the worst word an industry can suffer from. The reason our cinema lacks is because our audience cannot look beyond commercial cinema. Badrinath ki Dulhania seems like the typical and boring movie which did not dare to do anything different at all, and you want 2 of those movies made within Rangoon’s budget. I dont mind our industry thinking about money while making movies, but then completely dissing a movie like Rangoon which atleast put in some effort to go beyond the regular rehashed cinema that we make, is not cool at all. Yes, its a disaster, but for once, can you atleast mention that there was significant effort visible in the movie. I personally really liked it, but I know our audiences wont get it, and thats why we can never fulfill Indian cinema’s potential. There is a reason why the yearly business of Bollywood is going down. Coz when we go for commercial cinema, there’s a chance that it will turn out to be a damp squib coz the content wasn’t good. And when there are movies with content but seem boring, then they aren’t watched. As a Indian Cinema website, become more loyal to the cinema that we make. When you know that lakhs of people visit your site everyday, a simple negative remark that a movie did not deserve can affect their audience that they would have got. That’s why critics and reviews have been the industry’s downslide.
    Over and out.

    • @Rohan, no. Badrinath and Half Girlfriend are just two examples. It could be any two or more movies – Pink, Running Shaadi, Madras Cafe. There’s room for a few experimental failures, but not as expensive as this. It was always clear that films like Rangoon have no audience. It’s all good to talk about our cinema lacking, but it’s important to respect the taste of our audience. For art and content, there are hundreds of other films out there. You could watch Korean, you could watch those Oscar nominated films.

But here in our industry, economics is very important. You can’t make a dark looking film with sex scenes and invest 70 crore on it. It’s bound to fail. A large section of the audience isn’t even going to come to theatres. When the audience is simply disinterested, what’s the point then? In business, there’s no point supplying when there is no demand in the first place.

We’ve got to understand that Hindi Film Industry is a business. People invest in films to recover and make money. Not to impress a section of intellectuals or critics.

  • Note: The figures are our estimates, the producers have stopped giving out numbers feel pity on the producers now that langoon is such a major disaster

  • I can’t understand that from which source money comes for Vishal Bhardwaj’s movie. ..

    Does he have black money?

    D company?

    Who is producing Bhardwaj movie?

  • As a film it’s not dat bad
    But collections r disastrous .
Bollywood will not going anywhere because we reject95? films n basically celebrated dis failures with pride.
    Hope someday it will change.
We r damaging our own reputation
Hatred n Negetivity s d only thing which can survive now. Shame.

  • Economics of movie is different… Loss are unavoidable but need to check recheck the movie… I have strong doubt on Viacom 18 might be they buy a movie just because of name…. The distributor should watch first then buy a movie… 50cr is a huge amount for anyone like Ambani etc… Indian movie market is not so big as we have only 5000 screens and ticket price very from 50rs to 1000 rupees… Movies like dangal and Sultan making huge money but only once or twice in year other movies doing one third business and many movies even not reach 25cr total busines. My movie economics knowledge is zero but distribution house should think wisely and then invest in movies because 50cr is a big amount.

  • shahid should do movies like r rajkumar with established directors like prabhudeva, rohit shetty otherwise there is no chance for him to survive in bollywood post

  • Disturbingly bad performance. Poor Saif. He was such a good hero. Love Aaj Kal and Race were his best phase. Even crap like Humshakals opened well enough. But he seems to have evaporated that small fanbase he had. His next is the Chef remake with Airlift director. Hopefully he can at least have a small scale hit with that movie.

  • Kangna Ranaut is good actress but 10 crore fee is too much for her . Massive failure of Rangoon hurt Saif , Shahid & Kangna . Ketan mehta don’t make 80 crore budget film on Rani Laxmibai surely it will loss producer .
