Q. Why is it that a top star working in an ensemble cast is viewed negatively by people today? Many of the Amitabh movies had 2-3 heroes in which he worked with Dharmemdra, Vinod Khanna, Shashi Kapoor, Shatrughan Sinha, Rishi Kapoor. Movies like Kabhie Kabhie, Amar Akbar Anthony, Naseeb had 3 heroes and these were movies in the heydays of Amitabh. Why has that trend reduced now and why people view it negatively for a top star? ANK
A. An ensemble cast isn’t a negative for any film. There have been instances in the recent past when big stars have worked in multi-starrers. Zoya Akhtar’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara had Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol. Even the upcoming Dilwale has two bankable male stars. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham had arguably the biggest star cast of all time.
But if your question is specific to the biggest stars in the industry working together in a film, then the two biggest problems are economics and script. Economics because the market value of the three Khans is more than Rs 50 crore per film. When two or three of them act together, their fee itself would be more than the budget of the costliest film ever produced in the Hindi film industry. The next problem is the script, that has to do justice to all three of them. Salman wouldn’t want to be out shined by Shah Rukh and vice versa. And convincing Aamir will prove to be a herculean task in itself. Then, there are other issues like dates. As long as all three are at the top of their stardom, it’s unlikely to happen. Maybe in a few years from now, a top director and producer will bring all of them together in a film.
Q. Will Hate Story 3 buzz affect Tamasha collections? Wazir releasing 1st week of Jan Your take on that.The first week hasn’t been good from the past many years for the industry? – Aman
A. Not at all. The target audience of Hate Story 3 is completely different from Tamasha. Also, since Tamasha releases a week before Hate Story 3, it has one open week at the box office. If the word-of-mouth is good, it won’t be affected by Hate Story 3 in Week 2. If Tamasha disappoints, then the competition in Week 2 doesn’t matter. As for Wazir releasing in the first week of January, films releasing in this period haven’t performed well because the audience has rejected the content of those films. Back in 2011, No One Killed Jessica released in the first week of January and did well at the box office. Wazir will rely on word-of-mouth. If the audience like the film, it’ll do well, irrespective of the release date.
Q. 18th December is a normal Friday. Is it really possible for both the movies to collect 50 crore combined? And what is the expected screen space for both the movies? Can Bajirao Mastani touch 15 crore on day one and Dilwale 30 crore as to only a best result makers can hope of? What is your opinion? – Rahul Garg
A. The highest a film has collected on a non-holiday is the opening day business of Dhoom 3 (Rs 36 crore). Rs 50 crore is too big a number for a non-holiday release, something that hasn’t been achieved even by big films releasing on national holidays. The trade would be delighted if the combined collections of Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale crosses the Rs 40 crore mark on Day 1. That would be huge. We expect Diwale to be in the 20-23 crore range and Bajirao Mastani to be in the 11-13 crore range on Day 1. This could change once the music and song promos are out.

@indicine research before u replying. How come k3g has biggest star cast of all time? Replace srk with some other star u will find it is average starcast. Big B no remain force that time. Hritik was proving one film wonder like kumar gaurav and it’s proved with failure of na Tum jano na hum, muzse dosti karoge, yadein, etc after k3g success. There are many movies that had huge starcast like sholay, amar Akbar Anthony, naseeb, hum, ram lakhan, khalnayak, khaki etc. because all these movies has big actor who were at their peak at that time of movie released. Amitabh was phenomenon at his peak but not post 1990 similarly Sanjay dutt was huge during khalnayak and sadak days but u can’t say pk has huge cast because of Sanjay dutt past record. I don’t know people are ignorant when it comes to srk’s favour.

My only question is if you call jai ho as bumper opening with 17 cr in 4000 screen then what is your opinion on ek villain opening 16 cr on 2800 screen and grand masti 13 cr on 2000 screen all released on non holiday.
A single lead can’t run the movie. A movie needs co-actors along with the main lead. So the fact is, you can argue on “How big is the co-start or actress working in that particular movie”, but you can’t question the lead himself. I won’t give any other example but will take example of SRK’s movie itself.
In MNIK, it was all about SRK. But he had Jimmy as co-star. In Ra-One , again it was all about SRK, but he ad Arjun as co-star. Same goes with Don and Many more. In the same way, he has Varun as his co-star in Dilwale. So question should, how bigger name is “Varun” as compared to Arjun and Jimmy. But how can you question SRK himself?
And excuse me, a movie , whose trailer itself starts with lead’s voice and most of the time, he will be seen on the screen. Also, the first song comes with SRK-Kajol as the lead pair . So is there any question left , who is running this movie?
Yeah, SRK is not insecure as others and he gives equal screen presence to his co-stars . Because he knows that his charisma is unmatchable so no one can overshadow it. Unlike some non-actor, who easily gets overshadowed even by a 6 years old kid.
@Sidhi baat 3:53 pm :I hope you will stick to your “Seedhi Baat”. Prem Doob Gaya is an average movie in India and superhit in overseas. Because its budget was 125 cr ( and it doesn’t include the fee of Salman and promotion costs), and it is set to finish its lifetime within 210 cr. So considering the budget, its an average grosser or even may be considered as failure.

@indicine, from where did you read the mention of khans in the first question, he was talking about amitabh and you brought up khans. ..what the question was why do people think it is negative to be in an ensemble cast….The answer is simple….because it means sometimes the script is not good so the makers want to attract audience due to presence of many stars like I happy new year and dil dhakane do case. Second reason is that the whole reward of collections is not giving to a specific fans actor as other stars were also there..then the comparison comes that 1 superstar needs ensemble cast to give hit while superstar 2 is giving alone,etc
Personally, I love ensemble casts in comedies as they are the best…upcoming ensemble casts are Hera pheri 3 and housefull 3 which I’m looking forward to….even dilwale is ensemble but is not looking up to the mark

This question is for Akshay and Salman Khan. Esp Akshay who relies on multicasts or Katrina for his movies to do good esp mid 2000s when kat was the reason many guys went to the theatre to watch. Jokes apart Akki first hits Mohra Yeh Dillagi Suhaag . 2000s most hit movies were with Anil Nana Govinda John Salman Ritesh Suniel paresh. Now this 2010 onwards lets watch house full 2 multi blissful 3 is high most expected to cross 100 crs movie. Multicasting again!

Actually superstars dont want to get overshadowed by any supporting actor especially the khans . In prdp neil and swara bhaskar roles were cutted down although both are very good actors and you can see that in new york and ranjhanaa . But the movie was all about salman and his big heart .

Obviously you expect them to have the lead roles when they are paired with any other actor barring Amitabh Sunny,Aamir Shah Rukh and Ajay. For the 5 actors I named they can have equal screen space with them but not longer or lemme use the word “Vital”. Karan Arjun you can’t say Salman or Srk had a more vital role. people say Salman was the lead actor I won’t argue but I think am going for Srk for giving a more “Character Expressing” performance just like how he did in Daar. AAA same thing both Aamir n Salman role were almost equal. Ishq Aamir n Ajay perfectly identical. Same nos of individual songs and a bonus song “humko tumse pyar hair perfectly equal too. MSK… Akki did not bow to Salman neither did Salman. Insaan . Ajay Akki tough! London dreams both had equal too. Mohabattein Amit Srk equal… Khakee… Amit and Ajay had the 2 most pivotal roles…Hddcs Salman had a slightly more screen space but Ajay made it up for displaying one of his all time most solid pact performance, won many ppl heart(like mine cos back then Ajay was not my favourite it was Srk but Hddcs submitted my loyalty to Ajay that’s an honest fact am sharing.)
So from above multicast shd not be a hindrance for any superstar. I know there’s ego problem. I know of a superstar who demands for more roles from the producer(well known). But if they deserve it nothing wrong as long as the other team casts can throw away ego and be part of the project to attain the producer objective.
