PVR grows to 500 screens, could acquire DT Cinemas

India’s largest multiplex company PVR has become the first multiplex-chain to cross 500 screens in the country. The company now has 501 screens across 111 cinema in 45 cities across India, a press statement from the company announced.

PVR is likely to renegotiate a deal with DLF’s DT Cinemas. It was announced back in June 2015 that the company would acquire DT Cinemas, on a slump sale basis for about Rs 500 crore. However, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) had intervened and suggested modifications, as the 500-crore deal was considered to be very high valuation for DT Cinemas.

Currently, PVR has market capitalisation of Rs 3,298 crore and had debt of Rs 589 crore at the end of September 2015.

The company invests approximately Rs 175 – 200 crore every year as part of its pan-India expansion plans, which is to add about 60-65 screens every year.

  • Thats great from PVR..

Hope they improve sound quality… Some PVR cinemas have very poor sound system, which can damage ears..

  • My prediction for fan
    excellent .. 124 Cr
    Mixed .. 105 Cr

Know why so low when fan lifetime collection will come

  • Hope a multiplex comes in my locality. Nearest multiplex is 40mins away from my house that too by train

  • Impressive, good for them. They were also 1st to launch multiplex concept in India. As moviegoers, we can only ask for better quality for better experience.

I think 2nd leading multiplex would be ‘Big Cinemas’ (Reliance).

  • Great news..since there are more and more clashes being announced for big holiday weekends we need very large number of screens so that two films can reach their optimum potential..I hope many more cinema chains take the initiative and build as many screens as possible and that too at an expedite rate so that there is enough breathing space for over 200 films that we churn out on a yearly basis

  • These so called multiplex chains hv given rise to flop actors lyk Ranbir….!… They think that movie worked due to him,,, but in relaity its due to marketing n Deepika….!…

  • @yuvraj

    me too bro,
I enjoy matching movies more in single screen because single screen have huge screen, so it turned everything big & huge and superstars looks like hulk means superstars look superstar or super hero in huge screens

But multiplexs has too small screens compared to single screen and every huge canvas film look small canvas film and even hulk looks like flop star like srk

multiplex doing well because show up mind of the people and if you want to experience the film then single theaters are outstanding.

  • @ajinkya : I think pvr has the best sound quality among its competitors. I have experienced it in baroda, ahmedabad, pune and mumbai.

  • We should have more IMAX screens in India. Planning to watch Batman v Superman in Prasad’s IMAX, Hyderabad!

  • Dilwale most viewed hindi movie trailer in youtube beating krissh 3
My prediction for fan it will collect 200cr+
    Excellent response-300cr
    Good250cr
    Average to bad170-180
    Verybad-150

  • great. i want to see more than 20 thousand screens in india in next 10 years. currently pvr has its monopoly all over.last year pvr cinemas opened its screen in ma hometown which is fab.till now i have watched more than a dozen movie dere despite the fact i live atmost for two months in a year dere(during holidays).
previously i used to watch only major movies there starring khans hrithik or akshay because of the poor single screens. now i can watch any movie

  • sad news… PVR (and other multiplex chains) just kill regional cinema and promote only Bollywood and hollywood movies. It’s a killer blow to all south indian cinemas especially kannada and malayalam.

  • @ thullu – what funny before multiplex culture neatest single screen from my place was 5 now 7 km. far. i watched 4-5 movies per year now 1-2.

  • before multiplex indore had 22-23 single screen theater now only 5-6. decrease in footfalls is just because of high rates of multiplexes.

  • @EDX POWER, NOT KHANS ?: But the fact you have to consider is that the filmmaker (especially of big budget films) does a lot of research and invests a lot to use new technologies with regard to color schemes, audio output, resolution and so on and he wants the viewers to experiment those in the theater…sadly most of the single screens in our country has never bothered to update / upgrade the cinema viewing experience of the viewer by upgrading their audio / video output software / hardware. Unfortunately most of the single screens still runs with same technology from 15 years before.

  • @MovieBuff : I don’t know about Kannada but although Multiplexes are very strong in Kochi and moderately in other 3-4 other places it has by no means ruined the single screen culture in Kerala. The whole multiplex chain in Kerala will be around only 10-15% of all the theater count in Kerala. And moreover even in Multiplexes the majority of screens are for Malayalam movies. Even though big Hollywood / Bollywood movies releases Malayalam movies will definitely gets their share of screens

  • @Indicine
Our #Raees bhai visited salman khan on the sets of sultan in the filmcity….they talked…laughed and salman showed SRK some scenes from the sultan

  • Not know about kannada movie, but malayalam movies didnt affected by pvr like multiplexes, because malayalam movies have its own audiences. A well accepted malayalm movie can cross above 40 Crore, thats great, because keralas population less than 4 Crore.
