Aamir Khan’s PK and Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year were two of the most anticipated movies of 2014. While the former took a slow start at the box office on its opening day, Farah Khan’s Diwali release opened to packed houses across the country.
The comparison is interesting because both films had a similar release – PK had higher number of shows at multiplexes and also the average ticket price was about 10-12% higher. Happy New Year on the other hand, had two holidays in its first weekend (Sunday included), Saturday was also a holiday in parts of the country and it had a slightly wider single-screen release.
Interestingly, while Happy New Year went on to collect just 4.5 times its first day business (204.83 divided by 44.97 = 4.55), PK has already collected 4.37 times its first day collections (116.43 divided by 26.63 = 4.37). The Aamir Khan starrer, which is probably carrying the best word-of-mouth for any film released this year, could go on to do more than 10 times its first day business!
In 4 days, Happy New Year had collected 123.87 crore, while PK is trailing with collections of 116.43 crore.

PK created history on Sunday by collecting the highest amount ever in one single day. The top five highest single days in his tory are as follows.

Check your facts. Boxofficeindia gives lifetime figures of 180 cr. for HNY, so where did you get 204 cr. from? The first day figures of 44 cr. of HNY are grossly exaggerated. Its just 36 cr.
PK is way ahead than HNY and only 2 days of HNY can be compared with PK.HNY is not even a blockbuster while PK is heading for ATBB.
