After brilliantly transporting the audience to the Mumbai of the 1980’s in Once Upon A Time In Mumbai, it’s the turn of the 80s of Madras to be recreated in Mumbai’s Film City for Vidya Balan’s upcoming film The Dirty Picture. (Check out the picture at the bottom of the article)

The much awaited movie is about the colorful, musical and romantic journey of the Tamil screen idol, Silk Smitha, being played by the very talented Vidya Balan. Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor and veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah play the three men in her life.

Says Milan Luthria “Right now we are in full Chennai mode. Wherever we look we see people dressed in lungis. Tamil posters adorn our walls, we start our day eating idlis to get into the mode. We bought books and watched Hindi and Tamil films of the 1980s, and put that all together to arrive at an authentic color palette.”

A huge Chennai set has been set up in Mumbai’s Filmcity where the film’s cast has been shooting. “The sets have huge cut outs of Naseeruddin Shah who plays a huge south Indian star in the film. We painted the old taxis and auto rickshaws, and even had to change all the number plates, as it was Madras then and not Chennai,” he adds.
