There has been a lot of debate over the opening day collections of OUATIMD. So to clear all the confusion, here is the official press release from Balaji Motion Pictures. Do note that they mention the word ‘previews’ as the film had a restricted release all over. Today (Friday) will be the film’s first day at the box office.
Having released in approx. 1600 screens across India, Balaji Motion Pictures’ Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaara took a flying start on the day of its bank holiday previews (Thursday).
Despite a delayed release in Rajasthan (on account of protests), the collections netted a record-breaking Rs. 14.2 Cr for previews.
Theatres showed strong occupancy levels (80%-90%) with Housefull status in several centres.
On Friday, the film has opened up in approx. 2500 screens (including single screens), with sustained word-of-mouth and great response in the morning and afternoon shows. Going by these trends and with no other new release on the weekend, OUATIM Dobaara is poised to continue its winning streak.

Preview means “viewing of something before it is bought”. For movies it means the last shows before it is releasing and it starts only from evening not from morning.

So according to balaji, SOS’s “preview” collection was 70 crs because it got some more screens after the first week. Is that what balaji trying to say ? In OUATIMD’s case balaji cant even say it was a limited screen release . It is a proper release. It was the screens who didnt take the movie so how can balaji even say it was a “limited screen release” ?

Means with 800 screens & 4 times more ticket rates CE broke paid preview record of 3 Idiots.

But when it comes CE then official figures from UTV are more accurate.

MUMBAI: Winding up what has been a rather average year for the Indian box office, Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 3 Idiots, which is directed by Rajkumar Hirani and distributed by Reliance BIG Pictures, is slated to release with the highest ever print and screen count across the world. The initial reports coming in are fabulous.
3 Idiots released with 1550 prints across 1760 screens worldwide on 25 December, 2009. This surpasses previous big releases like Ghajini, which was released with 1150 prints, Singh is Kinng (1050 prints), Kambhaqt Ishq (1000 prints), Welcome (975 prints) and OSO (975 prints), Love Aaj Kaal and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (950 prints).
In the overseas, the movie released with 342 prints across 366 screens, which is the highest ever so far for a Hindi film. Advance booking for movies is considered a thing of the past these days but 3 Idiots has seen bookings of almost 40-45 per cent for the weekend and this is likely to go up as the word spreads. The movie’s show in India began in the evening on Wednesday, 24 December. The 6 pm and 9 pm were going houseful at multiplexes.
With Christmas falling on Friday, multiplexes and single screens alike are expected to be making merry with the crowds thronging for 3 Idiots. Additionally, with excellent reviews and word of mouth, the movie is bound to charter higher ground and set new benchmarks.

If that was the case then hrithik tweeted agneepath collected 25 crs on day 1. But at that time many including u reported its collection as 22 cr. Why u didn’t took producers figure at that time?

Early estimation of OUATIMD’s second day
Despite increase in screen size from 1500 to 2600, film remained on similar levels overall. Film started well in morning with 30% occupancy. But film failed to grow in evening shows beyond a certain level and at the moment it seems that film might end up with somewhat similar total as yesterday and marginally ahead of 2nd Friday figure of “Chennai Express”.
These are bad signs and it seems that film will struggle from here onwards. As per early estimates, film should collect 11.50 cr nett today taking two day total to 21.50 cr nett. Now film needs big two days over weekend to reach at least 50 cr nett figure and that is a big task.

Just because you didn’t get enough screens on the releasing day, that ain’t make the preview! It’s your own dumb fault for postponing your movie in the first place. If you hadn’t chickened out, your movie wouldn’t be in this place. Well, that ain’t matter no more since the movie is utter garbage and the people would eventually reject it. I even doubt it that they are telling the truth about first day collections.

Taran Adarsh is the only trade analyst who said CE grossed 33 cr. all other trade analyst including Komal Nahta, Amul Mohan, Girish Johar and Amod Mehra said CE didn’t break ETT’s collection and only grossed 29 cr.
and i hope krrish 3 will break ETT’s record even it opened on sunday the 3rd.
