PK Box Office: Here’s why the film should have collected more than it did on Day 1!

PKPK has collected Rs 26.63 crore on its opening day at the box office, making it the highest non-holiday opening for a film released in 2014. However, the footfalls of PK are significantly lower than Salman Khan’s Kick, which released during Ramadan (considered to be a dull period to release films).

A huge percentage of PK’s business has come from metro cities and bigger centres. Mass circuits like Rajasthan, C.I, C.P, UP and Gujarat were average, even though there was interest amongst the audience to watch Aamir Khan’s latest release. Even the multiplex business in these centres was below-the-mark on Day 1.

So, why are multiplexes at big cities collecting more, while multiplexes in smaller centres are under-performing?

A leading exhibitor, who didn’t want to named, said ”The problem is with the constantly increasing ticket prices. There can’t be 3 hikes every year. We raised the ticket rates for Kick, then during Diwali again the prices were increased for Happy New Year and now the makers of PK were adamant on further increasing ticket prices”

The multiplex is running 15 shows on PK on 3 screens, but the occupancy on Friday was poor at around 30-35%. Today, collections have dipped further. The exhibitor blames the ticket prices for the poor turn-out.

“Cinegoers get disappointed each time they visit our cinema hall to watch a movie and find out that the ticket prices have been increased yet again. The exorbitant ticket rates also kills the repeat audience. People are either happy to wait for the satellite (TV) release or there is always that option of renting a pirated DVD”

“It’s high time that the producers, distributors and the film industry as a whole, gets together and sorts out the issue. Delay the satellite release by 6 months at least. Fight against piracy.”

“Collections increase with hiked ticket rates, but we are also losing out on occupancy. There is virtually no audience for smaller films because money is exhausted by watching one film in 1 or 2 months. A movie outing for an entire family has become too costly for frequent trips to the theatre”

“If we take a stand against ticket prices, the result might be similar to ‘Gaiety Galaxy G7’ and ‘Maratha Mandir’ in Mumbai. When there are just 10-15 movies that succeed every year, we can’t afford to miss out on a big film like PK” he concludes.

  • these overrated khans think holidays is their baap ka maalare theirs. big money and the foolish media and audience tag them as superstars, pathetic!! other actors are doing far better job with lesser fees, lesser ticket prices and non holidays.

  • Calm down with the anti-aamir agenda…. A brilliant film that will only get better numbers in coming days- biggest movie of 2014 guaranteed- 300 cr club to be opened in early 2015…! PK rocks

  • Yes the ticket prices have tremendously been increased for pk..it all started with ek tha tiger where ticket prices were increased but they were only increased by 10-20% which was quite reasonable..but if we compare the ticket prices of pk with that of ek tha tiger then the increase in prices may be around 40%.. I hope the ticket prices get reduced by a margin and get back to the rates same as ek tha tiger

  • 3 khans depends on holidays. Still struggling to reach 250 cr. And there r other stars who release films on non holiday still manage between 100cr n 150cr.

  • The move to increase ticket prices seems to have backfired as occupancy is not up-to the mark.
Will the makers of PK now slash the prices down to normal is to be seen but the dent in collection is surely made in first weekend itself which is most important for a film.

  • Yes, this is one big issue in Bollywood now..But movies of Big stars like SRK, Salman and Aamir release once in a year, so i think people will be ready to spend anything to watch their movies. But the issue is with smaller films…People will be ready to spend 380 for Happy New Year, but wont be ready to spend even 100 for a movie like Ungly , Happy Ending or Shaukeens. So i hope they will take a realistic decision to categorize the ticket prices based on the movie..That will help to get back the occupancy in my opinion

  • I’d say ban this anti-hindu movie and sue the producer right away. They keep on doing this just because we keep silence. I’m glad this movie is gonna tank at the box office very soon and it deserves its fate. #BANPK

  • Yes,even I am Aamir fan but I simply loved the stand of single screens cinema owners against pk,Pk maker and utv increase ticket higher percentage and it is simply a lesson to every body in film ground to not inflate figure much,I think pk has suffered more due to high prices instead of lower rates, due to high rates most of audience prefer to watch on weekday as film for huge appreciation. For example if ticket rates remain same as hny or kick people come out more Numbers in weekend which increase the footfalls as well as collection but now footfall may remain good in weekdays but as we know weekend prices are much higher than normal day in multiplexes. So its a losing situation for PK team and a lesson too for all.
Other thing I will say more than collection I want pk should be appreciated as a movie and from every where on internet I found huge appreciation whether from critics or audiences so expect a huge total ahead.
At imdb pk got 9/10 rating in 4000+ votes.Great.
@sheheer pk released on normal day while hny on holiday still pk got highest non holiday after d3 again an Aamir starred and you compare with holiday weekend of hny.Lol.forget HNY 300cr and 600cr lifetime funda.Eat your word.

  • @indicine I don’t know whether you have had,but a friend of mine who works at atheatre told me the footfals of rowdy rathore was bigger than that of ek the tiger the deffernce was the tickets of et were much hgher than that of rr.@indicine please reply with regard to footfalls.

  • There was hike of 20 rs in the multiplex where I always watch movies but I had great and memorable time with my 8 friends watching PK so I will not complaint about extra 20 rs but I would have complaint if PK would have been bad movie but it is good movie so no complaints

  • Only single screens audience complaints of 20 rs hike not multiplex audience coz they buy 100 rs coffee and 50 rs popcorns in multipliex which is less than even half rate of these outside

  • I enjoyed watching PK with my 8 friends and will go again tomorrow with my family instead of saving 20rs and sitting at home

  • @r20
petrol price increasd but still people needs it just like khans(salmir dnt like srk)
if prices r hiked for mineral water people wil ignore it or luk for other options
yeah i am also against too much hike

  • everyone says pk will break all record , see now 5000 screns and despite hit ticket prize still not 30 crore one day Dhoom 3 was YRF movies and other 2 was bluckbuster that is why but aamir was crap at dhoom3 for me PK first part was good but second part was crap just copy for OMG i will mark my word it will not cross 250 at all 200 to 230 i am not fan of salman too but it will not go 250 . hopefully it will not go the way of Taalash .

  • @JD

Stop defaming Hindus! It’s your intolerance that you can’t accept a satire! I’m a Hindu, I have seen “Oh my God” and it was a fantastic satire. An eye opener for everyone.

Stop forcing your views on others.

  • This is serious issue…n hats off to owner of maratha mandir. He left income from pk for this issue…practically speaking…..these movies exploifing viewer’s by ticket hike everytime. ..so peoe are only choosing few movies in a year….even if any family wants to go for movie in mumbai multiplex cost is huge….middle class people cant afford it every time. ..n these people mostly contribute for biggest grosser…….so please khans respect ur fans don’t rub behind money. …

  • Thank goodness they haven’t inflated their figures so far. Producers’ figures are less than 1 crore more than BOI’s figure. Aamir kept his word!

  • Bulli my friend not all multiplex audience afford 100 rs coffee. ….I am from bombay n pune 50% viewers avoid such things only due to cost….n premium multiplex viewers cant make such movie superhit forget blockbuster. …..

  • Pk is unofficial remake of OMG. OMG release time tickets rate very low, so audiences not going to theatre with sky high tickets price.
Who want to watch again in theatre with hike price?

  • @sky – Lol…HNY released on partial holidays….with increased ticket price and xmas period and best weekend release PK collected 26 crs…remember 13 crs opening of TAALASH…lol

  • If someone should be blamed than it should be Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He is the producer of the film not aamir. So no need for blaming aamir. He is not a producer or co producer. PK’s opening is outstanding considering the genre. BB, Kick, SR, CNY all belong to same genre to loot masses. But PK is a meaningful class film so dumb wards masses who are brainless, won’t understand this masterpiece. And wait, this is just opening and no holiday, so no need for indicine to spread negativity. It will surely outdo dhoom 3’s lifetime record at the end of its theatrical run.

  • When salman khan movies are taking earth shattering start but still fail to cross 3 i amir tingo praised him that he is no 1 star of india while all the media bashed srk that opening is the real barometer of star power when srk turns towards masala all the openings records became history then i remember tingo khan after ce comes with a formula of weekend vs lifetime coll and again all the media starts the formula of tingo and yet again trying to underestimate srk hatts off to king despite too much jealousy he is rulling clearly everywhere

  • @kingshuk interestingly most entertaining action film Don 2 released on 23rd DEC 2011 and collected 15cr despite being sequal, talaash collected 13cr on November period and you are comparing both.Do you Don 2 was srk biggest non holiday opener till date while Aamir d3 and Pk both have 2 highest opener. You are not aware that Don released on 2700 screen with 400 3d screens, takaash released on 2500 screens.Pk has hiked ticket rates but I think hny collected 40cr on when all India in curfew period.Power of king.
Interestingly when Aamir Open records with 3i,ghajini and d3 you guys talking about other factor and when your over actors film released a holiday become non holiday.Salute to your wisdom man.Complan boy ke sangat me rahega to yahi hoga.Do you hny second day collection which was semi holiday it was 28 cr that too when film has universal appeal. Here pk hasn’t take a start on single screen man.Still 2nd highest non holiday opener 6cr less than d3 32cr Hindi figure that also was Aamir film.Baki humara king to abhi bhi overseas me 3i and d3 ko chase kar raha h.
    Fan-Raees chase begins.Lol.
