Neerja has just completed a phenomenal weekend at the box office, collecting Rs 22 crore. It’s the second highest first weekend of the year, beating the 20 crore total of Kya Kool Hai Hum 3.
The film more than doubled its first day business on Sunday, which is a sign of extremely positive word-of-mouth at centres where it has released. The screen average of Neerja is also higher than Airlift, which is the biggest success of the year so far.
It’ll be interesting to see where the film goes today onwards. Ticket prices at multiplexes drop on Monday, but the occupancy at quite a few centres that we tracked was as good as Friday, if not better.
Neerja is a winner at the box office, the film is already a HIT and could go on match the verdict of Airlift. The marketing strategy was elaborate, but well-planned. The makers did spend a little more than the usual spend for films that rely on ‘word-of-mouth’, but with the film performing so well in its first weekend, Neerja will be profitable in its first week itself.

Yesterday I watched NEERJA.
Its a masterpiece. Much much better than anything i have seen in last few months. Neerja Bhanot is a hero, m glad that Ram Madhvani and Atul Kasbekar brought her story to life thru this movie.
Coming back to movie its a fast pace thriller backed by Amazing acting by everyone. Sonam is perfect fit as Neerja but it was Shabana Azmi who literally stole the movie from everyone.
This movie is about bravery, overcoming your fear, daughter mother relation. I haven’t wept so hard in movie for a long long time.
MUST WATCH. Pls do yourself a favour book your tickets if you haven’t already.

@jaggu understand this simple logic higher screens mean higher budget and hence not beneficial at all.
prdp surely did run on packed houses but still most screens were single screen and the ticket price was low. whereas for neerja it has almost negligible release on single screens and good release in multiplexes as indicine mentioned that the occupancy was better than airlift so it can collect even 12cr on such low screens if occupancy is 100%
There are few of my friends asking here how is it possible to collect 8 or 9 crs on 700-800 odd screens and other movies collecting less with huge release…but in the second case the screens include single screens small city plexes n high end plexes where the ticket rates vary from 50-500 even at places 800 1000rs as well so the avg comes out to somewhat 100rs but neerja released on these high end plexes where the price is from 200 odd rs..so the avg comes out tp be above 100rs considering all the factors lyk ticket rates shows n occupancy..thats it..its all about appeal..for instance ghayal once again might have higher footfalls than neerja but might end up collecting half of it…
@ Ashish : 12:34 pm : Earning 200 cr is not a child’s play. Only 9 movies have achieved that feat and all were festival releases. There is an idiom which says “Hope for the best but expect the worst”.
Anyways coming back to Neerja it is great that such movies are doing well. Airlift and now Neerja. Hopefully more will follow.
