After Mahesh – Pooja Bhatt, Meet Father – Daughter Team of ‘G Kutta Se’

Bollywood has seen director duo brothers, husband-wife teams and even a brother-sister director duo. But this is one unusual team. Vinod Sharma and daughter Surabhi Sharma have produced G Kutta se and could be one of the few father-daughter pairs active in Bollywood since Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt started collaborating.

Q. Yours is a unique Jodi. It’s unusual for father-daughter to work together in Bollywood except may be a Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt.

Vinod Sharma – What’s even more unusual is, here the daughter was leading from the front. I run an entirely different business. It’s Surabhi who did her degree in Mass Communication and then learnt the ropes of production under Prakash Jha. She is the one who selected the script, put the entire team together and supervised production.

Surabhi Sharma – But I was pleasantly surprised when my father got involved hands-on with the project. I thought his role would be limited to giving the monies but he got involved in all aspects – From camera and lighting, to booking trucks and trailers for the shoot to taking care of all the artists and crew members during the shoot – down to whether everyone has eaten. He guided us and enjoyed the journey along as we moved ahead.

Q. G Kutta Se has a theme far removed from your plush Gurgaon lifestyle or Eastern UP background. Why this film?

Surabhi Sharma- I have been born and brought up in Uttar Pradesh and have spent major part of my childhood in Varanasi (my paternal home) and would visit Panditpur (my maternal home), a small village in Gorakhpur, hence a lot of my formative years were spent in mofussil areas like these, I have observed the strict gender discrimination up close.

The film I wanted to make had to be about the power structures and role of women in the rural society.

I have been brought up in a more resourceful family hence I have been very fortunate in getting a fair chance at making my own choices and living by them. But then I think of those close to me and how often they get to hear “log kya kahenge” and this decides their course of life. So G Kutta Se is here to make a difference and

I truly pray that it does.

Vinod Sharma – Violence against women is an everyday thing worldwide. I think a film like this addresses a lot that goes around us. I think films or any other visual medium is a best way to highlight these issues.

The film basically takes a non-biased hard look at women and addresses issues of equality among the genders.

Q. So will you continue working together? Any change of roles expected like either of you wanting to direct?

Vinod Sharma – I shall not direct as I run a business far different from the film industry but certainly if anything comes my way that catches my interest I shall adorn the producers cap- again.

Surabhi Sharma –Oh!! I am total Bollywood at heart, I fancy being in front of the camera. As of now I am happy being where I am.
