A: KICK releases on Friday, 25th July 2014, which is a normal weekend. The pre-Eid period, when most muslims in the country stay away from theatres, could impact business in muslim-dominated areas. The holiday for Eid is likely to be on Wednesday, 30th July 2014. So a lot depends on the word-of-mouth that the film is carrying. If reports aren’t negative, Kick is likely to take full advantage of the two national holidays (Sunday and Wednesday) in its first week.
Eid is the holiday that has given the industry its ‘biggest grosser’ 3 out of 4 times - Dabangg (2010), Bodyguard(2011) and Ek Tha Tiger(2012). Even last year Chennai Express crossed 200 crores even after competing against a big film like Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara less than 7 days after its release. It’s a foregone conclusion that the Eid period has emerged to be the best release period for Bollywood.
As for Happy New Year, the makers couldn’t have asked for a better date. The final release date hasn’t been announced. There are reports that the Shahrukh Khan starrer will either release on 22nd or 23rd of October. While 23rd is a national holiday for Diwali, 22nd (Wed)- 24th (Fri) – 25th (Sat) are holidays in different parts of the country. And then comes Sunday.. so Happy New Year has every chance of breaking all weekend records. We wouldn’t be surprised if the 150 crore mark is breached over the extended 4 day weekend with limited preview shows a day before release (Wed) just like Chennai Express.
The other advantage for Happy New Year is the fact that there are no major releases after Bang Bang on 2nd October. No movies are scheduled to release in the pre-Diwali period.
Coming to the competition, Akshay Kumar’s It’s Entertainment releases two weeks after Kick and Ajay Devgn’s Action Jackson (unconfirmed) could release two weeks after Happy New Year.
In short, on paper, Happy New Year probably has a better date as it has plenty of holidays in its first weekend. But other factors like the response to the trailer, song promos, popularity of music and finally the word-of-mouth will play a bigger role in generating record-breaking numbers.

Very frankly,HNY has a better release date as it is releasing on post diwali period and there is no big competition.but salman’s kick will lose some collection becoz of bobby jasoos and it’s entertainment.
SRK- the name is enough for any kind of publicity.

‘Kick’ has better release date bcoz there is Eid holiday on wednesday so collection will again rise after dropping on monday while ‘HNY’ collections will drop on monday and will continue dropping like Srk’s diwali release Ra 1.lol

the best release date this year is the 2nd october weekend. 2nd Oct (Thurs): Gandhi Jayanti, 3rd Oct (Fri): Dussehra, then the weekend & then Bakri EID on 6th Oct, Monday. a 5 day holiday weekend is like a dream weekend & thus so many films are lined up for release on that weekend. second best release date is the 4 day Diwali weekend. Christmas release date is like the previous year. EID release date is not the ideal release date this year because EID will probably fall 5 days after the release. Last year’s EID was the perfect release date with EID falling on Friday. As you mention in the article, section of Muslims will stay away from the theaters. Also KICK doesn’t have the Independence day opening factor which ETT had. KICK will not have a record breaking opening but I think the collections will definitely go up like it did for ETT on Monday, 20th Aug 2012. Let’s see who comes out on top this year, my predictions for TOP 5 (domestic) are: 1) KICK ( biased, cause I’m a Sallu fanatic). 2) P.K- Aamir-Hirani jodi. 3) HNY: SRK & Farah are a Blockbuster combo (atleast till now) & if HNY is as entertaining as MHN, then Records will shatter. 4) BANG BANG: Personally, I’m eagerly waiting for this movie cause I loved Knight & Day. but it will fight other two films which will surely make a dent in it’s collections. 5) SINGHAM 2/HOLIDAY: Not really sure about this one. Holiday has all the potential to become a Huge success for Akki. & Singham 2 is a sure shot Super Hit. (thanks to the sequel factor & Rohit Shetty’s Midas touch) How Big a hit it is depends on the promos/songs/WOM! SO, Let the Race begin..
Inshallah both HNY and Kick will do more than 250 crores….but the collections mainly depend upon word of the mouth,If word of mouth is mixed to negative then also 200+ crore for both films as both are khans..

SRK will finally get to enjoy what Aamir and Salman have been enjoying for years. Holiday release with 2+ open weeks. and the results will show who’s the king bc if SRK can do what he did with CE with competition from movies like OUATIMD, Madras Cafe, and satygraha, then he will break into the 300 cr territory with HNY provided the movie is not outright rejected by the audience which is unlikely bc SRK + farah combo has always entertained the audience.
For opening day kick has the advantage ‘cos diwali day (which will be thursday for hny) is bad for business and even worse than a normal friday cos of diwali puja (as we saw wid ra.1 and krrish 3) but fri, sat, sun will be huge for HNY. Opening day records come and go so I think for lifetime, releasing on 23rd is better.
HNY has the potential to break all records (except opening day) if it matches up to MHN and OSO or even CE.
@ Vicky business is growing every year and new milestones are being created. CE did 100cr in 3 days or 93cr if u follow distributor figures – no one would have expected that. 150 crores in 4 days is a stretch but you never know.
