July and August: The first two months of GST has heavy flow of movie releases

Goods and Services Tax (GST) comes into effect from July 1st 2017 i.e about a week after the release of Salman Khan’s Tubelight. The all-India average entertainment tax which averaged above 35% will now be flat-out 28% across all states.

Some circuits like East Punjab which was entertainment tax-free until now will be affected due to GST (ticket prices are likely to rise), while the burden of entertainment tax will reduce in the two major circuits of Mumbai and Delhi/UP. On an all-India level, the GST ‘advantage’ for film business will be 5% plus.

Currently, there’s no provision for tax-exemption for regional films which could end up helping the Hindi Film Industry – as ticket prices for regional films could rise. However, the film industry in general has expressed disappointment over the government’s decision of keeping cinema in the highest GST slab of 28%.

Starting from July 1, we could also begin reporting numbers in ‘gross’ like it happens the world over. While the collections of Pre-GST and Post-GST films cannot directly be compared, we could – with some simple calculations – adjust the collections of older films to make fair comparisons with future films.

The first two months of GST coming into effect will be welcomed with a heavy flow of films releases. Some of the noteworthy films are as follows:

July:

  • 7 July: Mom, Spider-man Homecoming
  • 14 July: Jagga Jasoos, War For The Planet Of The Apes
  • 21 July: Munna Michael
  • 28 July: Mubarakan, Haseena: Queen Of Mumbai, Indu Sarkar

August:

  • 4 August: Jab Harry Met Sejal
  • 11 August: Toilet Ek Prem Katha
  • 18 August: Bareilly Ki Barfi
  • 25 August: A Gentleman

  • NOW IT IS EVENLY MATCHED… WHY THE BURDEN OF ENTERTAINMENT SHOULD ONLY BE BARE BY BOLLYWOOD..

ITS TIME FOR REGIONAL CINEMAS TO CONTRIBUTE..

  • GST is good for Bollywood.

    Bad for regional cinema.

I think except Soth Cinema there should be exception from GST in regions like Marathi,Bangali etc.

South Cinema is well developed & so far only tax exemption allowed them to make mega budget films like Bahubali with 250crs budget.

But high Entertainment Tax… stopped bollywood from making such mega budget films till now.

Now GST will teach South Cinema that how hard it is to make a film with 200crs+ budget when govt asks you to pay high taxes.

& this reduction in tax will help bollywood for a certain level to make big budget films & show it’s real colour…why it’s real Indian Cinema.

  • JHMS will be the biggest hit and TEPK will be all time disaster..Akshay will lock himself in toilet after the release

  • I am disapppinted with the release date of Jab Harry met Sejal..they should have released it on 11th august only..if Raees can get 3400 screens against kaabil then this film can also get around same number of screens. Raksha bandhan is not a big holiday and it is falling on weekdays..
By the time the big independence holiday and another partial holiday comes into play, toilet would have taken away lot of screens from harry sejal and also it would be dependent on word of mouth to take that advantage rather than shahrukh Khan’s star power.
Lets see where shahrukh khan can take this film in the first week. A 25 crore opening day and an 80 crore weekend has to be on cards keeping in mind it will get a solo release on 4000 screens. Anything lower than this will again disappoint me.

  • Y not u r writing articles about fake dangal collections in china…..everybody is talking about that…y ru silent indicine??

  • Even jackie chan movies r not earning more than 2000 cr in china…how cm dangal gross 1000cr…..dont u think its illogical and something wrong wid d collections???

  • MOM, Haseena, Jab Harry met Sejal & TOILET EK PREM KATHA are looking content driven. Rest are all craps.

  • 28 is too high ….why should we public pay tax on entertainment …ye logic i cnt understand neither fathom …else u charge in a way not passed on to d public which cant really come into effect practically …it shld hv bn 15-20% at d max…

  • Toilet-EPK buzz is so high it will be the biggest film of akki so far and don’t surprising if it is become the biggest opening of akki

  • @maratha even aamir films not collecting 400 nett in Hindi how bahubali collected 500 cr? Dnt u think its illogical n something wrong with the collection?

  • @Maratha see a Jackie Chan movie which was pathetic like “Kung Fu yoga” this year collected 255 million $ in China.

Chinese market has grown by leaps and bounds in last 3 years.

3 years ago highest grossing film was avatar at 200 million $ now it’s a Chinese movie “The mermaid” which is highest at 556 million $.

So stop doubting dangal collections in China
The market out in China is not only star driven it’s also equaly content driven.

Dangal worked in China not because of Aamir Khan only it worked because of the content.

Only dangal which is likely to collect 88 times of it’s opening day in China and Zootophia hollywood animation film which collected 232 million $ in China (70 times it’s opening day) have shown such trend in China.

    Both had women oriented theme,
So you get your answer here, It’s women oriented film that clicks in china, and Chinese are not making such films.
