Is the so-called ‘class’ audience decreasing every year?

Q. Do you think that the percentage of ‘class’ audience in India is decreasing every year? From 2000-2009, the highest grossers of most years were classics / good films like Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Gadar, Devdas, Koi Mil Gaya, Veer Zaara, 3 Idiots etc. But now films like Ek Tha Tiger, Dhoom 3, Bodyguard etc are the highest grossers. What could be the cause behind this? – Nipun Kumar

A. The logic behind the question is flawed. How is a film like Koi Mil Gaya and Dhoom 2 (highest grosser of 2006) different from Ek Tha Tiger or Dhoom 3? For a film to be the highest grosser of the year, it has to appeal to every section of the audience – simple as that. Also, you can’t gauge the increase or decrease of ‘class’ audience by looking at the highest grosser of the year.

The so-called ‘class’ audience is not decreasing, but increasing with every year, thanks to the growing number of multiplexes. About a decade ago, films like Queen, Vicky Donor, Kahaani, OMG! Oh My God, English Vinglish and many others wouldn’t have worked at the box office. Today, there is an audience for such films to grow on word-of-mouth publicity and even affect the business of big films.

  • @arjun kapoor:ure right in your point.but still many people find many off beat films as boring. And a good point raised by sumeet. Here in indicine, u can see mostly people shout about kick or hny ,but how many ppl shout about bv? ? Like u,even I love watching both mass and class films.but mass films don’t mean it sud be like ready, bodyguard etc and become highest grosser.agree or not, but many go to watch stars more dan film.but there are some čw exceptions.

  • Krrish films are absolutely senseless and illogical.
Like I mentioned Krrish has no superpowers, when he jumps he cannot fly, when he runs he cannot run fast.
Why was the plane flying so slowly at about 60 km/hr?
Acting by plane travellers was pathetic and I was ashamed that this was an Indian film.
When Kaal tries to push the building down, we can see that it is just 1-2 buildings away….but Krrish begins to fly and flies through 10-15 buildings to reach there LOL
I know in masala films hero beats 20 goons, but at least we imagine him to be superstrong throughout the film. Not like Krrish, who has unpredictable and random superpowers.
K3 was the most illogical bollywood film ever. Only biased Hrithik fans think it is a class film.

  • @nipun u have nicely diffrentiated types of films but ‘Guzaarish’ does not comes in any type u mentioned and it comes in unknown type in which mosquitoes makes sound and the limited people watching that film in empty theatres were confused whether that sound was coming from the film or there were real mosquitoes in AC multiplexes.lol

  • @nipun you question itself been flawed, first of all you not understanding the difference between the business dynamics being changed recent now, a movie like D3 collected 95cr in first weekend itself, ce collected 88 cr itself. while 5 years ago in 2008 Dhoom 2 was the all time grosser before Ghajini & Rbndj came having collection of 80cr., so you himself can judge as today prospective the business of major films is restricted for 2 weeks, and in first week you can’t expect a film will loose its collection drastically if it not been rejected like Himmatwala or Ra1.
earlier film worked on WOM basically that’s what movies like Gadar, verer Zaara,Kmg,knph worked huge due to wom and way too different business dynamics, while today in time of global media a film is becoming think of past just after 2 weeks of its release date, due to multiple release in coming weeks, so you can’t expect a movie to emerge Huge grosser just because of wom unlike the film is 3i, who collected 202 cr despite having a weekend of 35cr.
and class audience is increasing that’y why movies like BMB,barfi, kahaani,OMG has huge success, might be you thinks as different prospect but you question is not justified in any sense.

  • come on @indicine how can u not differentiate between kmg, d2, ett and d3…..let me explain u….u had poll, after the release of d3, which dhoom series film is better and have u forgotten the result? d2—-50%
    and d3 —-26%
now are they at the same level? the difference is in the overall quality of the movie. n for kmg and ett…..i have seen u counting kmg as one of the best films of the decade, can u say the same for ett

  • @taylor swift not only me but many people who have watched d3 have loved and some even more than d2.I personally have disliked dabangg, dirt picture, delly belly, dil chahta hai but so almosr all my friends have loved them.but I have never argued or abused them for contradicting my opinion about a film as everyone has their own choice and its not possible for any person to like every hit film or dislike every flop films.but some idiots like taylor swift and ja want the only to appreciate what they think is good.

  • @nipun completely disagree if films worked only because of stars then salman wouldn’t have failed with jai ho after delivering 5 back to back blockbusters or akshay wouldn’t have delivered a disaster like joker after rowdy rathore

  • @nipun u are not a god to decide what should work and what shouldn’t.people enjoyed ready.bodyguard thats why it worked.@sky u are right, life time of a film has become restricted to 2-3 weeks but then online piracy has also increased hugely and in the age of twitter, facebook, whatsapp etc the word of mouth spreads faster than ever.so its possible for a film with bad or average wom to become a box office success

  • @sky:you have told what i actually wanted to tell.earlier, films used to be highest grosser depending upon their WOM.but now most films are highest grosser mainly due to the stars and hype, but not it’s contain.otherwise, bmb and barfi would have scored in those year over d3 n ett respectively. This was exactly the thing i wanted to describe by my question.but there was a locha in my question where i mentioned the word “class”. I should have only written gud movies instead of classics.
@js: u’re a hrhater.that’s why u’re bashing k3 which was even praised by some gud critics like anupama chopra n rajeev masand. I have already replied u earlier. Now i don’t wanna waste my time.
@sachin11:yes,even mosquitos didn’t watch guzaarish. That’s why it did 30 crores. But what about marigold? I think even a bacteria didn’t watch that.

  • @rata if u score90% in your xam but ur classmate scores 98% does that make u a bad student.similarly if more have said that d2 is better than d3 ut doesn’t people have found it bad or average.

  • @rata if u score90% in your xam but ur classmate scores 98% does that make u a bad student.similarly if more have said that d2 is better than d3 ut doesn’t mean people have found d3 bad or average.

  • @arjun kapoor:hehe. .as i have mentioned to terms. One is starpower, another is hype.jai ho never had dat hype like dabbang series, ready, ett, bodyguard etc. Where my actually fault lies is the word “class”. I should have mentioned only gud films. I found all the biggest grossers from 2000-2009 were nice wid an exception of oso which was average. But from last four years,i have not seen any gud film being highest grosser of a year.probably datz da reason i asked the question.

  • @arjun: and i haven’t said dat films only work becoz of starpower. But i wanna say dat many people go to watch star more dan film. Yes,wom is an important factor. Still,in today’s condition, widout a big star,a film cann’t become da biggest grosser of a year.

  • I bet my life that if five years later d4 and Chennai express 2 releases then the some intellectuals who were attributing success of these films solely to hype will start saying how good both these films were and how huge expectations they have on their sequels.then after the release of d4 and ce2 they will start comparing them with their sequels and start criticising the new films and hailing the older ones.

  • The bottom line how audience connect with the movie n lead actors, thats it !!!! Hype, buzz, promotions will play only a small role in a movie’s fate ultimately content is the ultimate factor whether it is 3 Idiots or CE or Dabangg !!!!!!!!!

  • @sachon11 hahahaha

Your response to ‘nipin senior’ about mosquito sound was hilarious n completely floored me…. Man I love that n I know ‘nipin senior’ will think only class audiences can appreciate that noise but I found it repulsive n off putting…!

  • ‘Nipin senior’ you digging yourself an even bigger man hole with this nonsense of yours. You started this article with a stupid question n now with the 50 comments have further muddied the waters by you squirming your way out of one contradiction after contradtion after loop hole after loop hole etc etc.

You unbearable troll- your mosquito like unmistakable ranting sound is really getting beyond annoying now- get a new ring tone other than that Guzaarish ring tone of mosquito noise- change the record for gods sake- get some ‘baby doll’…!

  • Lol @arjun think again. what more u want to decide that which movie is better if 3000 audience(voters) is not enough for u? A specialist panel? Then why was the poll conducted….

  • class films of emraan hashmi are jannat, shanghai jannat2 murder2 awarapan worked only due to single screens. Multiplex audience does not support emraan hashmi . They support overhyped overrated dharma actors like sid-varun ranbir ranveer.

  • The idealogy of Indian audience…..
Hollywood makes such great sci fi movies like Man Of Steel,TDK trilogy,Avengers,Spider-Man etc why our filmmakers not making such films ?? Bollywood is such waste.
and when sci fi films like Krrish,Robot,Drona,ra.one etc get made, they criticise it to death and say crap, and the same people watch and encourage films like bodyguard, rowdy rathore, ready. then they complain why Bollywood is not making such films.

  • Indicine, now u said krrish had not a sensible story. But three years back you called it a beautiful story. Here is the article:

    Posted in : Bollywood|October 27th, 2011.
Krrish released in 2006 and remains the only successful superhero movie to date (before the release of Ra One). What worked for Krrish was the beautifully executed love story between Hrithik and Priyanka. Also, the action sequences in the second half worked big time with the kids.
Kids loved Krrish and the love story appealed to the family audiences.

    • @Nipun, there is a difference between ‘beautifully executed love story’ and ‘sensible story’. The credit for the former goes to the director and chemistry of the actors.

  • who is saying about K3 its senceless or illogical, read my 1st comment, i cn say if this same movie made by holly, then evry1 could praise it more that it deserve, dnt forget K3 even most critically acclaimed Movie than any biggie…

  • @navo don’t get personal.@rata but your ent sounded like you think d3 was disliked by most.in Hollywood iron man3 didn’t get asany thumbs up as previous two iron man films and few even called it bad but nobody had problem with it becoming a blockbuster even more than life of pi or gravity.but when the dame happens on Bollywood some pseudointellectuals have problem.

  • I had asked indicine a simple question but they didn’t answer while they instantly answered this stupid question

    • @Arjun Kapoor, read your question, but your question didn’t make much sense either.

Your question was “Why have you giVen films like black, sarkat, parineeta, dil chata hai, heta pheri, dosrana, waqt, fashion, kaminey, bluffmaster, khakee, rangeela, dil hai ki manta nahi, sarfarosh average verdict when the leading media houses and 130cr indians have remembered them as successful films?”

Those films were average grossers because it failed to recover its investment (i.e most distributors lost money) when it released in theatres. Hera Pheri was a better film than Phir Hera Pheri, but the latter was a super-hit at the box office. Andaz Apna Apna was one of the best films of all time, but was a huge flop when it released in theatres.

Also you can’t generalise that 130 cr Indian loved those films. A film like Dil Chahta Hai, even if its released today, has absolutely zero market outside 10-15 cities. The masses don’t care about films like Black, Dil Chahta Hai, Dostana, Fashion, Bluffmaster etc.
