Is the so-called ‘class’ audience decreasing every year?

Q. Do you think that the percentage of ‘class’ audience in India is decreasing every year? From 2000-2009, the highest grossers of most years were classics / good films like Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Gadar, Devdas, Koi Mil Gaya, Veer Zaara, 3 Idiots etc. But now films like Ek Tha Tiger, Dhoom 3, Bodyguard etc are the highest grossers. What could be the cause behind this? – Nipun Kumar

A. The logic behind the question is flawed. How is a film like Koi Mil Gaya and Dhoom 2 (highest grosser of 2006) different from Ek Tha Tiger or Dhoom 3? For a film to be the highest grosser of the year, it has to appeal to every section of the audience – simple as that. Also, you can’t gauge the increase or decrease of ‘class’ audience by looking at the highest grosser of the year.

The so-called ‘class’ audience is not decreasing, but increasing with every year, thanks to the growing number of multiplexes. About a decade ago, films like Queen, Vicky Donor, Kahaani, OMG! Oh My God, English Vinglish and many others wouldn’t have worked at the box office. Today, there is an audience for such films to grow on word-of-mouth publicity and even affect the business of big films.

  • You people are only fool that divide people into class & mass by the movie . if one have to watch informative or innovative they would rather watch Discovery or NG not movies in theater . People come to movie to enjoy & get entertained it doesn’t have to add any class to them

  • @Dinesh..exactly.
Entertainment… Entertainment…. Entertainment…… I guess these are the three things which I look for when I spend 200 bucks every time I go to theatres. Fortunately, or unfortunately, many of us have developed a narrow perception about entertainment over the course of time. There has been an everlasting debate between ardent masala movie lovers and the so called PSEUDO-INTELLECTUALS that “Entertaining films can never give you a message and vice versa”. I contradict. I believe that entertainment, in its true sense, can never go wrong. We are not going to theatres- to cry, to be advised/preached, or to think like a philosopher, not even to do the post-mortem of the film, analyzing the negatives only!!! All these things when life gives us tremendously every day, why to spend money and waste 2 or 3 hours?????What is missing is thrill, action, a good laughter leaving the brains out….etc. which is absent in our lives…. that’s entertainment for me. Fortunately I’m among the 83% movie goers in the world today with this perception. And I don’t want to be a MUTANT in this case!!!

  • Thats a tight slap on Nipun. Kaho na Pyaar Hai , Koi mil gaya and Dhoom 2 are class films lol
KMG was a blatant ripoff of 1982 Hollywood film ET. And dont even talk about Krrish 3. It was worse than a masala film. At least in a masala film there is a physical limit to the main heros strength.
Krrish has no defined superpowers. Sometimes he flies, other times he runs instead of flying or even jumping.
While catching the airplane, why didnt he fly like he did while fighting kaal? Why jumping around the place. Absolutely illogical.

  • Agreed dat higher number of multiplexes are helping classics to do well.
But, if we see the 4 years, one genre films are highest grosser. But before 2010,we can see mostly classy films like knph,lagaan,gaddar,3i,kmg,vz,devdas were highest grossers wid 2-3 exceptions like d2 n oso. But d2 was nt a bad film either. But seriously, films like ett and bodyguard deserved biggest grosser credit. If a newcomer does a film today ,that cann’t become highest grosser like knph or mpk becoz now a days and if a film like bodyguard released in 90s,it wud neva have been the biggest grosser.

  • Pseudo-intellectual Nipun, Salman has the biggest fan following in India through all demographics Old, young, working class, business class, etc. You can’t divide them into class and mass.
Aamir’s choice of films is very popular among audiences and many people watch Aamir films just becoz he is in it. Even Talaash opened to 48 crore opening, despite low promotion and bit of negativity.
Keep your so called classiness to yourself, tomorrow KRK will make a film that will make you weep like a crybaby and you will hail it as a masterpiece.

  • There are 3 kind of films:
    1.classics widout entertainment(barfi,queen,lootera,guzaarish etc)
    2.classics wid entertainment(veer zara,knph,3i,ddlg etc)
    3.only entertainment,but wid sense(krrish series)
    4.crappy entertaining/commercial films(ready,himmatwala etc)

i think mostly 2nd and 3rd type of films do well. First type of films do well only if there is hype around it. Otherwise, dedh ishqiya, swadesh, guzaarish, lootera wudn’t have been flops.barfi, queen did well due to hype n wom.
4th type of films do well only if there is any salman or srk in it. Ready is an example.

    • @nipun, Who says Barfi and Queen lacked entertainment value? One of the reasons why Barfi and Queen worked, was because both were tremendously entertaining film. And the reason why Guzaarish, Lootera and even Swades failed at the box office, was because most found it boring.

Who says Krrish series made sense? There were way too many loopholes in both the Krrish films. You don’t go around looking for a sensible storyline in films like Dhoom and Krrish.

As cliched as it might sound, to each his own. You like a film and put it in a certain category doesn’t mean everyone has to.

  • haha what a ridiculous question. what was the logic behind Gadar? LOL! it just goes to show that Salman & Aamir ( stars of the above mentioned films) are equally popular among classes & masses. Jealous haters can’t digest the fact their superstar doesn’t have the star pull to top/feature in the top 5 grossing movies of the year. LOL

  • and from the above mentioned so called “class films” Only Lagaan & 3 Idiots are worth the appreciation! Krissh movies are Classic? Lulz. someone mentioned Veer-Zaara & KNPH are classics. again, Lulz.

  • I havd no problem wid entertainment.but a film shouldn’t be brainless entertainment like ready, grand masti.
@js:hey fool, did u read da question carefully? ? I have mentioned classics/good film. Do u even know the meaning of da mark “/” ? ? Kmg,d2,knph are good films atleast. Krrish series is nt masterpiece, but it is “revolutionary” to bollywood. Shame on idiots like js who have no problems wid films like dabbang2,ready,bodyguard,jai ho,ett,wanted,veer,d3 and here are complaining about krrish series which is atleast better than these craps and different dan regular rom com n masala.
Kmg n knph both won best films awards those year. Krrish n d2 also two films which took bollywood to next level. But films like ready and dabbang 2 are only making indian audience fools n polluting bollywood.

  • @indicine:umm. .i wrote an another word in place of entertainment. Replace dat word entertainment wid commercial value.den it will be what i wanted to write.

  • @indicine:huhh! How can u call krrish series senseless?? Then you have to admit hollywood biggies are also sensless. If a spider bites a man,how can he become a superhero! If a superhero flies wid his superpower, then it cann’t be said as senseless. When a normal human kicks a villian n the villian falls 100 mtres away,it can be called as senseless.

  • @stud:Where was it mentioned dat krrish is classics? ? Are people blind? Do they have a eye problem? ? It was mentioned as “classic/good films”. And ofcourse, krrish was a good film. Yeah, veer zara was a classic. It was a wonderful film.

  • @nipun you like a film or your fav hrithik is in it doesn’t mean the film is classic.how come knph, kmg, dhoom2,Krish seris are classic.

  • Well, @indicine:very good reply.
@nipun:i appriciate u for your question.
But i also feel that class audience are not decreasing, but increasing day by day.queen, kahaani etc say it all. As for guzaarish and lootera, indian audience needs some more time to understand off beat film. Those films were nice, but weren’t hyped.
And,i somewhat agree with u a bit. I found ETT boring. I think it’s the blind fan following an hype around these dabbang2,ett,bodyguard,ready which make indians watch those shits.

  • In hollywood, avatar is biggest grosser.but no one knows its actor’s name. But what is happening in bollywood? Maximum big stars’ films are highest grossers today.ex:d3,k3,CE,ETT,Dabbang2. So though class audience isn’t decreasing.still mass has affected class a bit, although not completely. If queen clashed with dabbang 2,it would have surely been a disaster.

  • @nipun: then you should specify which film you think of as a classic & which film you think is just good. you wrote classic/ good films & then you mentioned the above films. and sorry I don’t think Veer Zaara is a classic film. Classics are like Sholay, DDLJ,HAHK & many others. Veer Zaara, though is a ‘Good’ film but is definitely not a classic.

  • hahaha rofl.. Wah bhai wah, @indicine , is u want to say Krrish isnt sensible?? Dnt u dare to say that, Its nly k-series which has btr technique, and technology used in movie series ever in India, Is u can say any movie made on btr technology in India compare to K-series?? And as Indicine k series isnt sensible bt may be, ra1, ce, jthj, don2, ready, dbng2, joker, himmatwala, besharam, yjhd, r…rajkumar etc are sensible acc. Indicine.. Rofl
dnt u dare to say Rakesh’s movie is nt Sensible, its story also connected to each part, best story in 1st two part, good in 3rd….. Is its story is nt sensible @indicine??
Mainly k3 movie has best action ever in Indian cinema…. Its call sensible + entertaining movie which has techno’s class… Can u say any movie from India had made on btr technology than K-series??
Accept truth Indicine, its far more sensible sci-fi movie in b.town… Still if ur saying its senceless then sure ur bigger senceless person.. And krrish is 2nd best movie of 2006, which was winner of many award….
After 2009 i dint watch single sensible movie as highest grosser….

  • @indicine team, are you sure you are the same indicine team that was 2-3 years ago? i doubt that seriously because i have been noticing in your comments and also your articles. you seem to give a favoring side to khans, why so? i had respect for you because you were one of the few sites who gave equal importance to all actors but i guess that old indicine has been lost somewhere.

don’t tell me all the films that khans make are good. if we keep aamir separate, then in last 3-4 years, rest khans have been making films that are bad in quality. only because they have huge popularity doesn’t mean we will treat them as gods. you pointing out sense and logic in krrish series. yes it had loopholes but it wasn’t nonsense. how would you describe films like dabangg 2,chennai express ? it had entertainment for the so called people of india, so these are good films ?

If Indians were appreciating well made films and films which tried something new and different. then we would have OMG,Queen, guzaarish, taare zameen par in 100 cr club. You can clearly see most users who comment here always shout more happy new year or kick or films like that just because they star the big khans in them. what about films like bombay velvet?

    • @Sumeet, could you point out a sentence where we said ‘all films that Khans make are good’? Most Bollywood films lack sense / logic, which doesn’t mean they are not entertaining. The comment was in response to Nipun. You can’t differentiate films like Krrish, Dhoom 2, Dhoom 3, Ek Tha Tiger. Each of them have action, romance and song and dance numbers.. In short, most Bollywood blockbusters are typical masala films and this includes Chennai Express and Dabangg 2.

  • i just disappoing in year as i want highest grossing movie for that year,
    2007- deserving Taare zamin par,
    2008- deserving-Jodha Akbar,
    2010- deserving-Guzaarish,
2011- deseriving- Zindagi na milegi dobara..
    2012- deserving-Agneepath/Barfi
2013- deserving- BMB, MADRAS CAFE, LUNCHBOX….

  • Ek tha tiger isn’t a gud film. D3 was okayish. D2,krrish were gud. Just becoz they have da same kinda genre doesnt mean they are equally good. Agneepath, ready, rawdey r masala. But nt equally gud

  • Now can everyone stop this senseless discussion on this rubbish question.films all over the world are of three types-good,bad and average.films like avataar, spiderman,Godzilla are as meaningless as dhoom films, chennai express, krrish etc but all of them work because of their entetainment quotient.their are many who enjoy watching both queen, barfi and dabangg,krrish3 kind of films because.so such clasd vs mass debate makes no sense

  • I have watched both queen and chennnai express on their 5pm show on a Sunday at the same single screen theatre of kolkata and both the fims had gone housefull with around 800 people in the theatre.this goes there are many people who enjoy watching all kind of cinema just like their are many who enjoy eating both burger and dal chawal or wearing jeans-t shirt and formal shirt pant at different occasions.

  • In the climax of the recent godzilla film, godzilla suddenly starts releasing strong radiation rays from his mouth which made absolutely no sense so what is the problem with krrish jumping and flying at different occasions.

  • I think some people believe that showing of themselves as an intellectual and appreceating all kinds of Hollywood films will increase their status but they end up sounding completely ridiculous

  • @taylor swift you just ended up sounding ridiculous.u said d3 was okayish but krrish and dhoom2 were equally good.now tell me what is the difference between the style of filmaking of these 3 films.u want me ti believe that only the films that you like are good and rest are all craps that have worked because of wrong reasons???

  • People should start respecting film choices of others as well and not behave like hitler by abusing and insulting every person whose taste dont match with them.

  • I know indicine will never appreciate my coents becausr I had entered thesr website by asking them a very simple question that why have they given negative verdicts to some past hot films?

  • No.of successful films in 2011-16,2012-21,2013-17,2014-7 in so far.all kind of films from kahasni, queen, kai po che to dhoom,ready,krrish3 to jthj, aashiqui2,ranjhanaa to grand masti, ragini mms2,r rajkumar have worked at the box office that proves large no. Of people are accepting all kind of cinema.
