Film maker-producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra Friday said Indian filmmakers need to watch world cinema to grow or else the industry will keep making stupid movies.
“I come from a small village in Kashmir and I have seen only Hindi movies. Unless we see world cinema how will we grow? If we don’t watch world cinema we will keep making stupid films. Today I met two to three film makers and I felt great that people take out time and come here to watch movies,” Chopra told reporters at the 16th MAMI film festival.
“I feel it’s not just about world cinema… even regional cinema is doing well. For me the bottom line is cinema is doing well and that’s great. All kinds of cinema should get exposure and be seen across the world. All kinds of cinema are great but our cinema is greater.”
Film-maker Anurag Kashyap presented one of Chopra’s most successful films ‘Parinda’ in the presence of its lead actors Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. The film also had Madhuri Dixit and Nana Patekar in lead roles.
While this year the MAMI film festival saw many celebrities being part of it, Chopra says star power helps the festival.
“I am extremely thankful to Reliance who backed MAMI for so many years. This year the festival happened only because of movie lovers. All the stars who attended the opening ceremony had come there because of their love for cinema, not because they were paid be it Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Akshay Kumar etc. This is for the first time all of them have come together and supported. I think star power is essential.
” The 16th MAMI film festival will continue till Oct 21.

Have you ever wondered why Salman, Hritik, Aamir,Akshay etc are only compared to SRK and not with each other. Well the reason is the same as why every king in the world is compared to Alexander the great, well because he was the greatest and in this scenario King khan is the greatest. The only actors who are capable of taking Bollywood movies to international level are Aamir(3 idiots, PK) & Hrithik(Krish 3 and Bang Bang)…they both are truly making great films and are reaching international heights…Waiting very eagerly for PK first trailer…

Seriously bang bang got the most incompetent reviews. I give this reviewers a 0.5/5 and the movie 4/5. It is trying to search for exact logic in an indian movie the most inexact science. Most people go to the cinema to be entertained not to study for logic 101 exam. I was thoroughly entertained by this movie. Hrithik was so dashing suave and enthralling that he should be the next James Bond. It was more fun than the original Knight and Day inspite of having already watched the original.
This movie could have become a 5/5 for me with the following twist: The stakes are higher and Hrithik actually did steal the Kohinoor originally to avenge for his Brother. This leads him clashing with both the good guys and bad guys. He finally does recover the Kohinoor but than due to influence from Katrina and to resurrect national pride he wants to return it to India. The story then morphs from one of revenge to sacrifice and patriotism. Unfortunately to achieve this ultimate goal he would have to pay with his life. Katrina would unite with his family pregnant with his baby. He is honored with Bharat Ratana. Uk India relations are strained. Danny laughing all the way to hell ironically achieves his goal too. Hrithik death is fuzzy to leave the opening for a sequel.

@nipun : the same bad movies have given 6 Blockbusters & 1 semi Hit and the so called classy, great & sensible movies have given only one BB that too not everybody supports its 244 cr gross n some hits !!!!!! If Salman’s movies are bad then people of India are not fools like you to make 5 BB in a row !!!!!!! Grow up else it will be harm you more in longer run !!!!!!!!

Every year in december a certain man releases his films. He knows that in this period the most holidays are, working people are getting there 12, 13 month salary. If he released his films in other months everybody knows that the movie will be a flop. He had only 2 ATBB, not because his fame. But the fame of top directors and top brands. What about That?

@aniel we have a certain strange man who has been releasing most of his films in his career during diwali. This is his 12th diwali release. He knows that without diwali his film will be flop and he will be overshadowed by everyone. That poor strange man knows nothing except romancing woman of all ages without having a thing called shame. That fallow romances women who look like his daughters or even granddaughters. Poor fellow.
To get rid of stupidity from your films you need not watch world cinema. What you need to do is to read sufficient literature of all languages. Many writers dish out brilliant ideas which are really worthy of cinematic plot. It is to catch the technical advancement and for photographic perfection you may watch foreign films, otherwise today even the Hollywood movies are brainless productions. When some regional film in India is a blockbuster, some one brings it out in Hindi. And invariably, the Hindi production is sheer stupidity with unnecessary masala-filling of sex,nudity, canned- humour and absurdities, killing the subtlety of the original plot. Remember the taste and understanding of average film-goer has improved over the period.

i think that vidhu v chopra talks a lot of nonsense. Most art films tend to flop badly even with big stars in them. hard to find and make films which are both arty and commercial so its easy for him who hasnt directed anything recentlyto say stuff like this. Most people i know dont want to spend money for an arty type film unless they like the story or the actor most audience want to go out with their families and have a fun time. if he is casting shade on srk eg maybe he sd ask why aamir did dhoom3 which was a commercial movie
