Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan is currently the highest grosser of the year – both in India and Overseas. Released in theatres during Eid this year, the Kabir Khan directed film collected Rs 321 crore in India and Rs 186 crore overseas.
With 2 months to go, 2015 has 4 big Hindi films lined up for release. Salman’s Prem Ratan Dhan Payo releases during Diwali, followed by Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone’s Tamasha in the last week of November.
Hate Story 3 has taken the internet world by storm, what with the theatrical trailer receiving more than 17 million views in just 12 days after its release. It has even beaten the view count of Salman’s PRDP (15.3 million). At the box office though, Hate Story 3 isn’t really a contender to be the highest grosser of the year. It would be a huge success if it manages to collect Rs 100 crore or more.
2015 will end with a bang. Two massive films – Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s super-ambitious magnum opus Bajirao Mastani and Shah Rukh Khan’s multi-starrer Dilwale – are scheduled to release on the same day, which will affect the business of both films. To recover costs, the combined business of the two films will have to be in excess of Rs 325 crore (domestic).
To sum up, among all the films that are scheduled to release this year, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo has the best chance to beat Bajrangi Bhaijaan. For Dilwale to emerge as the top grosser of the year, it would take something extraordinary. A film as entertaining as ‘3 Idiots’ and even then it would need Bajirao Mastani to be rejected by the audience – something that happened last time when SRK’s Om Shanti Om and Bhansali’s Saawariya clashed at box office. Unlike 2007, Salman with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Aamir with PK (last year) have set the bar way too high for anything less than ‘good’ films to be the highest grossers.
Between the 1989 to 2014 period (a total of 24 years), Salman has dominated 8 of those years, Aamir Khan has delivered the highest grosser for 6 years, SRK 5 times, Hrithik Roshan has done it thrice and Sunny Deol (who was a huge star in the 90s) has delivered the HGOTY twice.
Would it be safe to call 2015 as Salman’s year once again, giving him his 9th highest grosser of the year in 25 years? Or can Dilwale surprise, even though the odds are stacked against the SRK starrer?
With 2 months to go, the industry would be hoping all 5 major films (including Hate Story 3) perform well enough to surpass expectations.

This has to be the Best Article of the day for me . Bajrangi Bhaijaan has done outstanding business and it will be very difficult for any movie in 2015 to break that record . But PRDP can break this record because it is releasing on Diwali, Salman coming after BB, Salman and Sooraj Combo coming after 16 years and Family Drama which will be seen after a long time . But the problem is will youth accept PRDP ? It can break the opening day record of Bahubali and HNY as the day after Diwali has been the Best Day of the year in terms of business . Tamasha is releasing on 27th Nov and i don’t think it will work at the Box Office . The trailer was mediocre and the songs have been bad . After seeing the response for Shaandaar i don’t think people will like Rom Com . Hate Story 3 can surprise everybody as people are talking a lot about the movie . Single Screen audiences love such kind of movies and Music can play a huge role in solid opening and healthy lifetime collections . One more movie is releasing on 4th which is missing from this list is Wazir which stars Farhan, Big B and Aditi Rao Hydari . But i think this movie can be postponed to 2016 since there is no news for the movie from a long time . Bajirao Mastani is swinging like a pendulum it can surprise everybody or it can be a sureshot Disaster . Dilwale starring SRK, Kajol, Varun and Kriti is looking solid on paper but the content will play a huge role for Dilwale . The first target should be 227 CR then it will be SRK’s Highest Grosser . I don’t think Dilwale can break the records of PK and BB . Even if it does more than 250 CR it will be huge . I don’t think SRK fans should expect 350 CR now . When the trailer releases something can be said about the genre and the scale of the movie . In 2001 Gadar broke the records of HAHK and was the Highest Grossing Bollywood movie . It faced a clash with Lagaan . Such a thing can happen but it looks almost impossible as of now . 2016 looks brilliant with Dangal, Sultan, Raees, Shivaay, Mohenjo Daro, Bahubali 2 and Airlift . I will be realistic here. To cross 300 cr, you don’t need only the star power and a festive release, but the content should be strong enough to have a repeat value. There are two factors which may go against Dilwale :
1. Content : Though not a single poster or trailer of Dilwale is out , still I can say that Rohit is known to make light entertainers and not something which will be remembered for years like PK and 3 Idiots. So no doubt , Dilwale will be high on entertainment values, but I am not very much sure about its content and repeat value. And trust me, without content , there is no star in this industry, who can cross the 300cr barrier, at least as of now. You might get high opening and record breaking first weekend, but ultimately its content which will help you to score a record-breaking lifetime. The most recent example is, Kick,HNY and PK. Whereas the first two were carrying an average WOM and thus ended up within a lifetime of (<250 cr) , PK went on to create history with a strong WOM and universal acceptance .
2. Clash : It's almost certain that Dilwale is going to crush Bajirao. But its obvious that Bajirao will dent the collections of Dilwale till an extent. Because, it's not like Bajirao will release only at unknown and small centres. Mainly it will be released in multiplexes (which was a strong base of SRK so far) . So even though if they book 30% of multiplexes also, it will affect Dilwale in a long run for sure.
So , my take is : Salman's Bajrangi Bhaijan will top the chart this year until and unless Dilwale carries a strong WOM (which is highly unlikely) . Anything around 230-250 cr from Dilwale will be satisfactory for me and anything above 250 cr will be an icing on cake.
As far as PRDP is concerned, there is no way that it will cross 300cr , whatever is the WOM. I predict 250-270 cr for PRDP.
