Haider has collected Rs 26.79 cr in its first weekend at the domestic box office, which is a decent weekend for the film. But considering the critical acclaim that the film has received, it certainly deserved to collect a lot more than it did.
In the first 3 days, business was around the 6.5 crore mark, Sunday picked up almost all over which helped the film cross 7 cr for the first time, but day-wise growth over the weekend was lower than most films carrying good word-of-mouth.
Like Bang Bang, Haider also lost out on business because of the clash. The film would have probably crossed the 30 crore mark, more so because the critical acclaim and response on social media was as good as a film like Queen. On our review scale, Haider is the second best reviewed film of 2014 after Queen. (Read critic reviews of Haider).
For Haider, it was always going to be tough battle against a more commercial and audience-friendly film like Bang Bang. But a section of the media, including some well known journalists, have been quoted saying that Haider would have collected 3 times more if it released on 4300 screens like Bang Bang. It simply does not work that way.
There is a reason why films like Queen, Haider, Vicky Donor, Kahaani, Dedh Ishqiya and others get limited releases. These films have absolutely no market at mass centres. Not many would watch Haider in circuits like Bihar and the interiors of UP and Rajasthan. For the audience in these centres, the only genre that works is masala, comedy or action and has to feature a mass hero.
More often than not, films like Haider rely on business from multiplexes from select few big centres. The cost to release a film in smaller centres would be more than the business it generates, which is why Haider hasn’t released on fixed rental screens.

Agreed with the article. Movies like this have limited appeal. It wouldn’t have crossed 10 crore on its opening day as a solo release either. But, movies like Queen and Lunchbox with minimal promotions have proven that a good word-of-mouth publicty will carry them to success. Queen’s opening weekend collection was 8 crore and went on to collect over 60 crore, Lunchbox is a blockbuster in overseas market and hit in India.
Haider is ahead of Queen by 20 crore in terms of their opening weekend collection (thanks to bigger star cast and promotions), let’s see if good WOM publicity carries it like it did to Queen. It should end up doing 80+ crore if WOM is close to Queen. I hope market for these type of films will keep growing in future.
Fox Star has suffered more than UTV with this clash, though. Makers of Haider will be quite happy as it was never supposed to open huge.

I m happy for sahid.he always had in him to make it big but he was let down always by poor script selection.but after haider and his upcoming shandar he will dfntly join the big legue and could even race ahead of my youngistaan to bcm a superstar

Its hard to predict how much money a movie is going to collect, and it’s very easy for people to say that Haider would have collected more if it hadn’t clashed with Bang Bang, well I think its false. I think Haider actually gained with the clash because it got more public awareness. Its easy for a movie like Haider to go unnoticed and it could have easily gotten less collections. I think Bang bang was the only movie who suffered (not much though) by this clash. And all of you that say Haider is going to collect all the awards (I really hope you’re right), but in this industry they only rank hit films. We have seen it in all the award shows and it was really shown last year when film like Chennai Express, Dhoom 3 and Krissh 3 were nominated for best film while the best rated movie last year, Lootera was completely forgotten. Its pretty easy for me to say that if Queen would have become a flop movie, there wouldn’t been a chance for Kangana to win best actress because these juries doesn’t see who did the best, but they only look at who collected the most money.
Haider should have released solo. With so much talk on twitter and good review if it was a solo release people would not have had a option to go watch bang bang. ( cause with movies like bang bang adults will take kids to watch it). You give a choice to audience they chose what they are conditioned to do. If you want to change audience conditioning you need to take risk and be confident and should have released haider solo.

I just watched Haider. It has great storyline. Superb acting by all the actors involved. Film is a bit slow but the performances keep you glued to your seats. I think, it deserves what it is collecting and it should collect more in the coming days as well. People are really liking it. I will give it 4/5.

for me holiday was an average to above average film.. the biggest problem with holiday was that never tries to be gud…. dont u think it was pathetic, when sonakshi slaps his father, the wole romance angle and govinda scenes weren’t neccessory. the most important part of films are direction and screenplay and holiday dont had very decent screenplay and direction.. queen and holiday are 2 of the most highly acclaimed films, audience wise, for 2014. its just that akki is in bad phase of his carear, otherwise holiday would have been in top 3 highest grossers.

Haider has good chances to get Super Hit status…Even with critical acclaim it is not showing good jumps in collections…40-42 for first week and 18-20 crs for 2nd week. 3rd week will be 4-5 crs..so a max of 60-70 crs in on cards…which is very good…
Good movie like Haider could have earned 30 cr. weekend easily if it had released on any other day…this movie doesn’t need to be released on 2nd oct to get clashed with bang bang and affected the business of both movies . Haider made in small budget and could do much more business what it did now. High budget movies like Bang Bang needs to be released on holiday period so tht it can earn its profit but unfortunately Haider messed it up badly .
ok many people have less knowledge on this but Haider needs 45cr+ to get a tag of HIT
since the movie has been made in 24cr + PA = 34cr .. it has already recovered its cost of the movie by earning 26cr on weekend .. now almost 13 dayss left before HNY releases .. so there is no way Haider wont be a HIT .. and flop or avg is now out of the question , and if u dont believe me … then look the budget of HAIDEr on any bollywood site and read about it . u will know
