Sunny Deol’s Ghayal Once Again has been in the making for a long time now. The sequel to the 1990 blockbuster was first planned under Ashwini Chaudhary’s direction. It was titled ‘Ghayal Returns’ and the makers of the film had even released a trailer in 2011, announcing it for a 2012 release.
Since then, a lot has changed. ‘Ghayal Returns’ was shelved, Sunny decided to direct the sequel himself and titled it ‘Ghayal Once Again’.
Even after Sunny took over, the film suffered from delays, the most recent delay came when ‘Ghayal Once Again’ was shifted from January 15 to February 5 – which, thankfully, will be the final release date of the film.
Factors in favour of Ghayal Once Again at the box office:
- Sequel to one of Sunny Deol’s most successful action films from the 90s
- Sunny still commands a good following in circuits like East Punjab and Delhi/UP
Factors that could affect the opening of Ghayal Once Again:
- Huge gap of 26 years between the first and second film
- Sunny no longer commands a following amongst the youth, Ghayal Once Again unlikely to find too many takers at multiplexes in big cities. Fate dependent on performance at mass centres.
- Poorly planned marketing campaign
- Trailer and promos haven’t been liked
