Sholay in 3D – to release in 2012

Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, arguably the most popular film in the industry of the Hindi film industry, is all set to hit theaters again! But this time in an all new format – 3D.

The mammoth star cast and dialogues of Sholay have had a great influence over audience across all generations, which is one of the reasons why the film is coming in 3D.

Producer-director Ketan Mehta’s high-tech effects ‘Maya Digital Studios, has been conferred the responsibility of releasing Sholay in 3D. The senior director at the studio Frank Foster will lead the project. It is decided that due to technical constraints, among all the scenes most of the action sequences will be in 3D.

This movie which is over three hours, will be the longest movie to be converted into 3D. Foster admits that converting this 35 year old movie that is not colour-corrected from 2D to 3D is a very challenging task. When movies normally have 2000 shots, Sholay had about 5000 shots that needs to be enhanced for better visual effects.

With a conversion software especially developed for this movie 90% of it is completed.
