So far, Chennai Express has bettered every record in its first weekend. While trade pundits were confident that the film would break the overall weekend records, most were shocked and pleasantly surprised that the film averaged Rs 30 crore per day.
Which brings us to the records that Chennai Express chases on Monday.
Currently, Ek Tha Tiger holds the record for the highest Monday collections, but the film benefitted from a national holiday for Eid. For a non-holiday Monday, its Ranbir Kapoor’s Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani right at the top.

It is nauseating to see the media and Trade experts going bonkers over Chennai Express breaking Ek Tha Tigers opening day record and being the fastest to gross 100 crores. Shouldn’t there be a system of verification by the media instead of taking things at face value. The media needs to take all the relatively credible sources and arrive at a fair verdict. Morever one should know that CE was released in 3800 prints and ETT was released in 3200 and with increase in ticket rates by 40 percent rates it is bound to make more money than ETT. So how can one say that CE broke first day record of ETT. And technically too CE was released on Thursday so it was the first day of release so how did it break ETT’s record. But one fails to understand the brouhaha over movies of big stars making to the 100 crore club. With large number of prints and hiked ticket rates it is easy for the big banner movies with big stars to make it to that exclusive club. In this scenario the movies should be grossing 200 crores to be called blockbusters. Even a Farhan Akhtar starrer has made it to the 100 crore club so whats the big deal if bigger stars enter that club.
Today, the trade magazines have started indulging in biased box office reporting. Now the analysts have started reporting the numbers in crores a film has made. This is in contrary to the percents that they have been continuously reporting for so many years. Now the BO collections are mentioned in figures and not percentage, simply because the numbers are misconceived and equally spread across the media as such. With the constantly changing numbers being promoted so highly, the “convenience” in reporting stood out much more, which is why they have made this decision. Furthermore, many analysts report success or failure randomly without any explanations of how the Indian Film Industry Box Office system works. The Indian box office reporting in media is lacking in clarity and disclosure. In Bollywood the box office enumeration in the trade is done from the distributor’s, not the audience’s perspective.
Over the last few years we have seen horrible movies like Dabangg, ETT, Don 2 and now Chennai Express being a huge success. On one hand the audience complain about quality movies not being made in India and on the other hand the same audience lap up the above mentioned nonsensical movies. Our audience deserve such movies. Such a shame.
Lastly the only 2 genuine blockbusters in the last 10 years have been Three Idiots and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Well made movies with right mixture of entertainment and message. We need such type of movies and not trash like Chennai Express or ETT

i expected 75 cr in the weekend but it surpasses my expectation and collected 11 cr more 86cr weekend collection, now this is the record which is not easily breakable even for k3 or d3 its not easy to break, as we know fr this kind of records one have to get min. 2 clear holiday and its will not get by any film near future as both k3 & d3 will have 1 holiday in their first 3 days, so this is the record which will be stay with srk for min 1 year and might be in next EID it will break because now EID is the festival who creates back to back records, congrats to srk, ce team and srkians that after a long time srk achieve which was desperately needed by his fans. @amjad maruf you are right but it not possible always to make movies like 3I,TZP,BMB,Swades,CDI again and again and people are basically needed entertainment and you can make great movies with content but don’t forget people basic need is Entertainment from movies and movies like ETT,Dabangg,CE,RR,Golmaal series etc providing the Same, so its not necessary that you will always eat in 5 star sometime Enjoy the test on Street shops Gol Gappas, Pao bhaji etc, cheers…

i think YJHD non holiday monday should break by CE, as per ETT monday collection this is not easy.
i wonders fans are bashing BOI report while it was unbiased because the Distributer share which was declared by BOI is the Same as declared by officials, so collection might be less and more but final faith i.e. distributer share is remain Same.
like ETT – 199 cr official , BOI- 186 cr but distributer share by Boi and officails are aroung 103-104 cr.
