Films are complete in 30-60 days, not 300-400: Akshay Kumar

Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar has said that he feels films should be completed in 30-60 days and not 300-400 days – taking a dig at actors who take nearly a year to shoot their films.

The actor also said, he completed ‘Housefull 3’ in just 38 days.

“It is not rocket science, it is very easy, you just keep on working. I don’t think one film should take more than 60 days. I finished ‘Housefull 3’ in 38 days. Everyone comes on time, we work hard. I work for eight hours and it was very fast.”

“I had read that they made the film, ‘Mission Impossible’ in 52 days. I don’t know how we talk about 300 days and 400 days. Films are completed in 30-60 days, maximum you take 70 days, how much shooting will you do?” Akshay said, expressing surprise over how some filmmakers and actors take 1-2 years to complete a film.

The trick to Akshay doing 3-4 films a year is that he doesn’t sit on the editing table, nor does he involve himself in the pre-production or post-production work. He approves the script, gives his dates, works for no more than 8 hours a day, doesn’t work on Saturday or Sunday (it’s in his contract) and doesn’t assign more than 10-15 days to promote a film. This allows him to do 3-4 films a year and also take 2-3 vacations with his family in between films.

“My shooting days were 38 days, but it took 40 days to make the trailer because they (makers) couldn’t understand how to show in two and half minutes everything about it’s storyline. It was very difficult for them, I remember so many times they showed us, but nothing was working out.”

Directed by Sajid – Farhad, ‘Housefull 3’ releases in theatres on June 3rd.

  • There is some truth but not every film can take a quick fix. Esp if u re making a Bahubali Or Bajirao mastana Or during the making of the film something interesting crop up in the write ‘ s mind and they need extra days to input those extra’s. Then wont u give extra date? Recently SLB said in an interview that he would love to work with someone like akshay but you can’t get 150 days from him! So a H3 can be completed in 2 months but not a Bahubali.

  • Akki has no experience of working in technologically advanced film dats y he uttered such nonsense..
If he was the director of robot 2 he would have completed in 2 months and presented a magic robot type of film.lol

  • You love doing craps which dont need long time and you say you heard that MI was completed in 52 days you only heard you are not sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Manan bingo! There is not a single actor in bollywood who is as fit as akshay so impossible for other big actor’s to complete under 100 days . Also Akshay doesn’t take much retakes As he is a natural actor .

nd to all the idiots who r giving examples of bahubali nd Mohjndro should understand Akshay is talking about Majority of bollywood films which doesn’t have much of High budget or any difficult things. Khan’s make their film’s budget bigger by taking long shooting schedules. Only hrithik works in big budget movies in bollywood nd still he doesn’t make them profitable ? kites budget 80 cr nd collection 42. Bang bang 150 budget nd collection 145 !

    U need 150 days for movies like,HNY,dilwale,kick ? ? that’s funny

Even for blockbusters like PK ND Bajrangi bhaijaan you don’t need more then 60 days!

When an high octane action movie like mission impossible can finish under 60 days then these kick, dilwale should be rapped under 30 days . Perfect example by Akki but still some are showing their hatred towards him.

  • There are 100 scripts available, so if an actor chooses one that will need lots of preparation to be ready for shooting, then he can complete another film in the mean time…
If all actors do this and release 2-3 movies in a year, then there would be no need of promotion as people already would know which movies are coming and come by themselves to watch!!!
Promotion is only important when actor is coming after a long time and people have forgotten who he is…This isn’t the case with other movies like Neerja or Airlift that had minimum promotion but still were hits…
Sure, you can still spend months on promotion, but shooting shouldn’t be dragged on for too long
And people saying Dangal shoot took so long because amir has to gain and loose weight a lot, then what is the use of VFX…?? imagine if amir did fan, first he will shoot the fan portion, then he will wait 20 years until he is 70 and shoot star portions, and then he will do post-editing for 3 years

  • All of you mentioning Bahubali, but how many films like Baahubali are made in last year alone..?? Only 2..Not every film is of that grand scope..Even this year, only mohenjodaaro and shivaay is of that grand scope…none of the other movies require this much time according to your logic

  • when you are making crap after crap then 38 days are also too much. akki is not more than a b grade bhojpuri actor.

  • when you are making crap after crap then 38 days are too much. akki is not more than a b grade bhojpuri actor. suna babuwa

  • What the hell is he blabbering? Mr. Akshay kumar, for your information, please look at your whole filmography and see how many horrible cheap d grade movies u have done. Who are you to dusrespect other superstars who work so.hard for their character for a year and you are trying to indirectly make fun of them? Jyst because of you did few good movies like airlift, special 26, baby doesnt make you authorized to blabber anything because u have also done out and out crap movies likr khiladi series, joker, boss, singh is bling, rowdy rathore, tees maar khan and countless others list goes on. Respect other superstars who work hard for a yearor even 2 years unlike greedy stars like you who give one or 2 good film in a year and then follow up with craps.

  • SRK and Salman movies dont take 300 to 400 days so apparently he is talking about Amir Khan or Hrithik.

I dont think there is any thing to feel proud about in completing a movie in very short or very long period. Time period doesnt matter. Audience has an amazing level of trust on Amir not because he takes long time in completing a movie but because he delivers guaranteed quality which I rarely see any other star do with that consistency.

So to deliver that quality if Amir needs 300 to 400 or even 500 days then it is completely justified. People are willing to wait for 2 years for Amir because they know he will deliver something exceptional. Thats actually something to feel proud about and not the fact that u can complete a movie in 40 days.

As far as quality of movies is concerned there is no match at all between Amir and Akshay (and even SRK and Salman) overall. Amir Khan means quality and so delivering quality is more significant for me regardless of time period rather than ensuring completion of movie in 40 days.

Until and unless we are talking about exhibitors because in their case I can understand that completing 40 days is more significant.

As far as Hrithik is concerned he is not yet in the same league as Amir as far as delivering quality is concerned. But lets wait for both MD and Rustom to release and then we can compare both and have a fair idea about who delivered better quality.

Overall founds these thoughts of Akshay quite strange. For me quality matters and not time period.

  • @ANK…Well as far as Aamir is concerned there is quality (3I, PK) and there is mediocrity (D3, Ghajini). So the general perception about ‘Aamir is all about quality’ is a bit misplaced I would say. But that general perception + his release timing during a lucrative period has helped his films to rake up gigantic BO numbers. But nevertheless credit to him for exploring the X’Mas period to the fullest.

  • @ Thug at 6:39 pm : Its not just PK and 3I. But u should also watch his other movies like DCH, RDB, Lagaan, TZP etc. The last time I saw him delivering a crap was Mela which is what like more than 15 years ago. Didnt watch Mangal Panday so cant comment but have heard it isnt a crap either. So honestly can any other actor claim such consistency in delivering quality? Not for me at least.

D3 was ok for me. But Ghajini was a fine movie. So even in masala movies he hasnt actually delivered a poor or crap movie.

Hrithik is a very good actor and a superstar and good that he also focuses on quality and succeeds majority of times. But not in Amirs league at least for me. But yes would prefer Hrithik to Akshay overall.

Anyways we can disagree and no issues with it.

  • And in Hrithik vs Alshay I forgot to mention that found Hrithik way ahead of Akshay as far as delivering quality movies is concerned.

Its just that when I compare Hrithik to Amir he falls short for me but he is outstanding nonetheless.

  • no comparison between classy and dashing THE GREAT HRITHIK ROSHAN and a third class pathetic gobar kumar.. no way HRITHIK IS WAY WAY WAY ABOVE HIM… no matter how much housefullss he gave HRITHIK WILL REMAIN SPECIAL

  • Makes sense. If a 140 minute film has 100 minutes featuring the lead, even if 2 minutes of footage is shot daily the actor can allot 50 days. Pre and post production should not be the actor’s prerogative.

  • It depends on the type of movie, a film like bahubali wouldn’t of worked if it was rushed. Housefull or golmaal type films could be made less than 2 months

  • ank @ 7.33 pm .. i do agree with ur point tat hrithik is behind aamir khan in delivering quality but hrithik is in the same footsteps as aamir has been since last 10-15 years and after aamir its hrithik who is considered mr perfectionist .. hrithik always has given priority to quality rather than quantity .. in 2000 after knph hrithik could have easily done romantic movies but he preferred to do fiza and mission kashmir .. masterstroke ! in 2003 after koi mil gaya he would have done anothe masala movie but he did lakshya ! masterstroke .. in 2008 after doing dhoom 2 he did a historic jodha akbar!! with such a brilliant acting ! can u recall any other actor including aamir khan who can do justice to the role of akbar wt like hrithik did . i dont think so … after tat he did aparlegic patient in guzaarish !! well i need not explain how good it was !! his act was classic beyond classic in guzaarish .. ! after tat he did a simple guy film znmd which was lighht hearted then he did revengeful agneepath the superhero krrish then again roller coster bang bang now he is doing APERIODIC MOHENJODARO AFTER TAT HE WILL DO A BLIND CHARACTER IN KAABIL .. dude see the tronsformation of his roles .. in such a short span of time hrithik has given us so much wide variety of roles hrithiks success ratio is also more than aamir hrithik is 50% while aamir is 48% its just tat aamir releases his movies in chrismas tat he has gone ahead of hrithik in box office numbers .. but still after hrithik my second favorite is aamir khan …

  • mohenjodaro will crash rustom left right up down .. indicine himself has confirmed tat MOHENJODARO IS MASSIVE FILM . HOW MASSIVE WILL IT BE IS A THING TO WATCH

  • Hrithik wouldn’t be ahead of akki if he didn’t have allegiance with famous family background, his ties with that allowed him to be choosy early on. I can understand akki’s opinion as well as other actors opinion, other actors take long time because they want their film too look great every aspect and do retakes to make it appear better, on the other hand akki doesn’t do retakes he wants to finish his films quickly and get ready for next project, I admire his hard work but sometimes I wish he didn’t rush. His movie fate suffers majority of the time because he has 5 to 6 line up every year, it may hav worked some years but majority years it suffered more. But credit should given to him, because of his number of line ups a year, many non famous actors as well as film technicians, singers gain employment.

  • Everyone has their own working style and pace…. To each his own…. Akki dsnt involve himself in pre/post production/editing… Other creative aspects so it’s easier for him… He needs to do his part only and not bother abt film in total or blindly trust execution part of d filmmaker….. While others like aamir salman sit on d editing table wd Dr inputs and see thru d project as much as possible… Ds is coz like it or not much is at stake wd dem and myb coz of past experiences… Dey Lk to b involved…. So apart actual shooting days… Dese activities also take time…Akki dsnt do night shifts or Sat sun… Salman dsnt like early morning schedule but can do late night shifts… Wd aamir more days r taken coz he takes much time to sign on the dotted line…actual shooting days for regular Hindi mvz will b more less same…. Akki my b bit more faster coz of his punctuality and all…. Now luk at Sultan… Dangal.. . Drz a certain physique which needs to b achieved so Dr will b added time needed for dat…. Baaki promotions r definitely more hyped up… Buzzed for khan mvz den Akki…. Though at d heart of it all… It mostly means interviews… Reality show visits…
I m not criticising any of Dr styles… Just saying each has adv.. Disadvantages…
And others rightly pointed out… A Vfx heavy film or a large scale movie where big sets r required takes more time.. Also mvz which r shot in dffrnt dffrnt locations… E. G… Sultan.. Shot in Mumbai sets… Fir Delhi… Fir UP… NOW Lil bit in haryana I think next schedule… So all ds takes time…. Now whether shooting at dffrnt locations is required by script or is useful or not is another debate altogether…….. Having said all ds ideal situation wld b aamir movie every year even if not 2 at least 1…same wd hrithik
Salman toh ds cm of on an average 3 mvz in 2 years… Myb per year two wld b awesome….. Srk has said he wants to do more mvz as well… And for Akki.. He dsnt need to do more mvz per year from wat he is doing but I wld Lk him to think abt his strategy… Of release date and all… And do not more dn 3 in a year… And tk dat next level up in his stardom

  • Well, I respect his opinion. But, every actor and director has his own formula of film making. Movies like Bahubali cannot be made in 30-40 days. Heck, even their VFX cannot be done under that period. Some actors like Aamir (Ghajini, Dangal) or Hrithik (Guzaarish, Krrish 3) have to take a lot of time for their physical appearance according to their character, but I don’t remember Akshay ever losing or gaining any weight for any of his movies in his long career. The bigger the scale of the film, the longer the time it might take to be completed. Akshay himself is doing a big film like Robot 2, while he might require to act for more than 30 days for this film, but it will still take many months to be made from start to finish. While a movie like Neerja or Baby does not take much time to be made because of their limited budget and appeal, nor does it take much time for actors to dedicate extra time on their character. It is not as simple as it sounds, but Akshay is surely a lucky man thanks to his time management skills.
