Filmfare Best Debut Awards Winners and their current standing

Aamir Khan and Salman Khan won the Filmfare Best Actor Debut award in 1989, Ajay Devgn won in 1992 and Shahrukh Khan won the same award in 1993. These four actors, along with Hrithik Roshan (2001) and Ranbir Kapoor (2008) continue to dominate the industry even today.

The film industry desperately needs more bankable stars and even though the likes of Sidharth Malhotra, Shahid Kapoor, Varun Dhawan and Ranveer Singh have given the industry some hope, it remains to be seen if they can go on to match the super-stardom of the Khans, Hrithik, Akshay and others.

Meanwhile, it will be interesting to look back at winners of the Filmfare Best Debut awards from 1989 to 2014, to see how many have survived the test of time in the industry.

Note: Akshay Kumar did not win the Filmfare Best Debut award, it went to Ajay Devgn that year. Abhishek Bachchan’s much-hyped debut in 2000 was literally swept away by the Hrithik tsunami.

Filmfare Best Debut Award Winners year-wise:

  • 1989: Aamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak) – Did a few good films in the 90s including a few blockbuster, but only got better with age. Currently, the most bankable star in the industry, a man that most people look up to. The trust that the audience have in Aamir films is something that most actors can only dream of.
  • 1989: Salman Khan (Maine Pyaar Kiya) – It has been a roller coaster ride for Salman. Unprecedented craze, extreme lows during the mid-2000s when his films didn’t even get a initial. More because of bad choices and favours that he regularly did for his friends in the industry. He could have so easily continued to do the same and fizzled away. But the biggest test for any actor is bouncing back from failures. Even his biggest of fans wouldn’t have predicted the kind of comeback that he has made. 6 of his last 7 films have been blockbusters. Enough said.
  • 1990: Not awarded
  • 1991: Not awarded
  • 1992: Ajay Devgn (Phool Aur Kaante) – Until he decided to do commercially viable films, Ajay was never really the biggest draw at the box office. Golmaal onwards, Ajay has consistently delivered 100 crore grossers. Most importantly, he has survived in the industry for 24 years now.
  • 1993: Shahrukh Khan (Deewana) – Shahrukh Khan is the biggest success story in the industry. Period. Not only did SRK rule the box office for years, he was the only attraction for the overseas audience for more than a decade. Only 5 outsiders without a godfather have won the Filmfare Best Award and amongst those only Shahrukh Khan has made it big!
  • 1994: Saif Ali Khan (Aashiq Awara) - The man who famously rejected Diwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Saif has been fairly successful in the industry, but could never make it big as a solo star.
  • 1995: Not awarded
  • 1996: Bobby Deol (Barsaat) – Bobby’s first few films did fairly well and he looked promising as an actor too, but completely faded away in the early 2000s.
  • 1997: Chandrachur Singh (Maachis) – He didn’t have the looks, yet managed to romance Aishwarya Rai in Josh. His performances were received well in films like Kya Kehna and Daag. However, in a mishap while holidaying in Goa, the actor suffered from multiple shoulder dislocations. Unfortunately, he couldn’t make a successful comeback.
  • 1998: Akshaye Khanna (Himalay Putra) – A fantastic actor who did a few terrific films. Couldn’t make it big. He hasn’t had a release since 2012.
  • 1999: Fardeen Khan (Prem Aggan) – Super looks, bad actor. Not good enough to make it big in the industry.
  • 2000: Rahul Khanna (1947 Earth) – Never appeared in conventional universally appealing Bollywood film in the first half of his career. When he did, it was too late.
  • 2001: Hrithik Roshan (Kaho Naa.. Pyaar Hai) – The only actor to win both the ‘Best Actor Debut’ and ‘Best Actor in a Lead Role’ in his debut year, Hrithik Roshan took the nation by storm in what will be remembered as the biggest debut in the history of Indian Cinema. After a dream debut, Hrithik had to go through the toughest phase of his career with back-to-back failures. But the fact that he never gave, worked harder after every failure, finally resulted in a huge comeback. After Koi Mil Gaya he hasn’t looked back.
  • 2002: Tusshar Kapoor (Mujhe Kuch Kehnaa Hai) – His debut film with Kareena Kapoor was the biggest surprise hit of 2001. All his solo films after that sunk without a trace at the box office.
  • 2003: Vivek Oberoi (Company) – Promising career. Aishwarya Rai. Press Conference. Salman Khan. End of the story.
  • 2004: Shahid Kapoor (Ishq Vishq) – A terrific actor with almost everything going for him, Shahid has probably suffered from being extremely choosy and the films that he did pick haven’t worked at the box office. But since he started so young, he still could make it big.
  • 2005: No awards
  • 2006: Shiney Ahuja (Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi) – His personal life has affected his profession. Did he have it in him to make it big as a solo hero? Probably not.
  • 2007: No awards
  • 2008: Ranbir Kapoor (Saawariya) – Regarded by many as one of the best actors in the industry today, Ranbir has a promising future ahead of him. Currently, he has the best line-up of films and will be working with directors like Rajkumar Hirani, Imtiaz Ali, Anurag Basu. Has the potential to challenge the Khans and Hrithik in the near future.
  • 2009: Farhan Akhtar (Rock On!!) and Imran Khan (Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na) – The multi-talented Farhan Akhtar has done well so far. His solo-films have fared better than expected. On the other hand, Imran Khan has completed faded away. The disastrous response to Gori Tere Pyaar Mein was the biggest blow to his career.
  • 2010: No awards
  • 2011: Ranveer Singh (Band Baaja Baarat) - Too early to judge his career. Talented and has the screen presence needed to make it big.
  • 2012: Vidyut Jamwal (Force) – He out-shined John Abraham in Force. His next film was a solo-starrer Commando, which did reasonably well too. However, for some unknown reason, the industry hasn’t accepted him.
  • 2013: Ayushmann Khurana (Vicky Donor) – Delivered a super performance in 2013’s best film Vicky Donor, but has suffered major setbacks in Nautanki Saala and Bewakoofiyaan. He is young, has the talented and also has a few promising films lined up.
  • 2014: Dhanush (Raanjhanaa) – National winning Tamil actor Dhanush delivered a fantastic performance in his debut Hindi film Raanjhanaa. He will be seen in Shamitabh next.

  • How can money be a parameter of success? Bull sh*t films like Chennai Express Dabbangg, Dhoom have made millions.

The recent blockbuster Pk was another moronic comedy. Made for 4 year olds. Indian public should watch Ship of Theseus or One flew over Cuckoos Nest to learn real cinema

  • @ranbir fan I luv the way u support rk but u should not insult the other superstars .I cringe every time I read this stock line of yours -‘khans,hrithik done and dusted”!!! these superstars will nvr b done and dusted even if they give 15 flops in a row bcz once u create a place in everyones heart u can nvr loose that love and respect from the audience.superstar legend rajesjmh khan had an extremely prolonged
disastrous end to his career but ppl hv still loved him till today, watch his evergreen mvz and always call him as one of the greatest superstars of india ever.u r support rk so much, that’s really good.u want rk to beat everyone and bcm the king, that’s excellent and I also want that to happen. but plz don’t insult the other stars unless some morons say extremely rubbish things about ur fav star rk

Now you are free to argue on this list.

P.S.- a fun article not to degrade any actor.

  • @ nipun salman live his lovelife and pain through tere naam and ur childish kmg star acting nothing infront of pain of love what salman showed in tere naam but filmfare were busy in please their favourite srk and hr. hr didnt deserve but salman deserve this award. google about this.

  • @indicine plz reply or atleast mention in tevar weekend article if their is any chance for a miracle to happen that can make tevar a succes

  • for me 3 worst salman performence are-
1- biwi ho to aisi. 2- chandramukhi. 3- main aur mrs. khanna. and i am sure nobody can do better cuz roles hadnt good.

  • @ arjun- i think only one miracle can give hit status. boney will give free tickets to peoples. hope it will do 50 crore cuz i like arjun kapoor.

  • @ranbirkapoorFan dude I am also a RK fan, and I would suggest you to not be an arrogant fan. Yes our favorite is great but we should not belittle others, specially senior actors.
Give respect and u’ll get respect. Don’t bring bad name to the fandom pls.

  • @yuvraj,
aamir fans don’t talk nonsenses about bhai. E.g- read any cmmnt of @sky or @sid original. So, its our (we bhai fans’) duty to respect aamir sir. So, plz don’t target aamir and pk in near future.

  • Hrithik no doubt has the best debut followed by Aamir who also in his debut year got National Award Special performace for QSQT. These 2 are the two perfectionist of bollywood, have done the least no. of fims which shows how commited they are to there are in past and even now.
Many debut awards were not deserving but among the most undeserving out of them is of Ranbir. Saawaiya shit film, Neil Nitin mukesh was better in Johnn Gaddar. And Indicine this year all your doubts will get cleared. Ranbir a challenge to Khan and hrithik. No way. He is not a commercial hero. he will fall this year. All films will tank it will start with Roy and finish with Tamasha and Ranbitka banega Tamasha. Very overated actor. He wll be in there with Tushar, fardeen, chandrachur, shiney and others in that list faded away stars list.

  • @SSS. abbaba ur comments are all always as irritating as your srk’s over acting and if I am not wrong u live in Hyderabad right, I am a proud Hyderabadi myself then why the hell do u hate south Indian movies, their remakes & south Indian actors? Arei patte tereku kaiku rei itni problemaa south Indian remakes sei, agar tera jaan jigri srk south remakes nai karega tho south indian movies bekaar hogaye kya rei ajoobe?

And wtf did u just comment ? ‘Filmfare awards are the MOTHER of all Indian awards’! Hahahahahahaha with such type of ridiculous statements you are insulting srk & his other fans more and those who don’t trust this ‘mother of all Indian awards’ are curse to Bollywood ah? wah rei mere lal srk must be really proud to have a genius fan like u Lol :D

And indicine you have no problem with SSS’s ridiculous & irritating comments na Lol :D

  • @arjun kapoor….tanx nice said to @rhandir fan. Its good u highlight those to ignorant fans that think actors after spending 24-26years and still dominate d industry r being castigated!!

  • @indicine… Honestly no though I wish cos am going to continue to watch Hindi movies so I wld love to see some of d new guys last long. But in terms of superstardom longetivity its gonna b very hard task for d new generations to attain what d 5 huge stars u mentioned have done.
@indicine.. R u sure its not suppose to b Aamir 88 Salman 89. Cos 2 actors can’t win d same award same year. Qsqt released 88 mnpk 89
…rhandbir…. Next 6years will judge his halfway to d final race but for now he has everything to b successful ….Shahid Ranveer Sushant and Arjun …..with good qualitative scripts could really go far.
Id ayushman and varun…will do good but wit time I want to believe they could b more involved with multi starrer movies and supporting role. Still rate sid and varun below Rhandbir Shahid Ran veer and Arjun despite their recent 100crores and 100% success ratio respectively.

  • @NVS… ROFL!!! …..ware mere lal!!!…. Anys @SSS he deserves it! Always off track!! Mother of all awards?????……@SSS Plus y r u always inferior or insecure when u hear d name NATIONAL AWARD ahead of MOTHER OF….whatever??? …oh I see…I know y(LOL)!!
@NVS…yeah I agree to that Rhandbir is overrated though his a very talented dude but interms of longetivity like d bigger stars…no way!! Surprised he started his debut when he was 25/26 years??
    Aamir …23
    Salman 23
    Ajay ….21
    Akki….23
    Hrtk… 26
    Rhanbir..25
Our King…27/28 years old for his debut…quite young…

  • Sidharth Malhotra should’ve won the Filmfare Best Debut Award for Student of The Year . A die hard Sid fan .

  • @ indicine – salman didnt win his award in 1989 filmfare award cuz release date of movie was 29 december 1989 so u mean either he win before his debute or awards organised in 31 dec. but reality that they gave the award to sooraj by mistake or their intention to make laugh of legend salman god knows. later award gave to salman but it shows award shows arent perfect. what some 2-3 people think isnt acting but acting is art where actor is feel the audience that he is living the character. film fare isnt fare thats why manytime they consider poor performences of srk and hr over briliant performence of Salman, aamir and specially Ajay. just becuz they are eklavya not trained by film training center and srk and hr are well trained actors like arjun of mahabharat.

  • @Sky : Agreed with most of your points. Yeah, it will always be a subject of discussion that how these awards work. And that “Commercial as well as critical acclaim” has been quoted by indicine many times.
At times, even I feel that they give importance to both commercial value as well as critics comments for a movie/star, but yeah , few exceptions are there.
As you said, based on this theory, Salman was a clear winner for HAHK !!!

  • Danush was very good in ranjaana but I think sushant singh rajputfwas more good in 2013.
So I was disappointed that sushant does get that award.

  • Vivek Oberoi. Lol. That was really funny @indicine.

I guess you should have written that he sort of made a comeback with his Kaal villain role.

His issue is that success went to his head, and then with Aishwarya he was floating 2 feets above the ground.

He is a good actor though, and can still survive if he do villain and character roles.

People are vouching for the youngistaan now, and majority of these new ones are going to bite the dust like those earlier guys.

The problem is that when they fail, they will blame all others except themselves.

  • @sky nice choice for awards

I know it will be difficult for you to agree the bitter truth that SRK ruling the bollywood for years. and you know salman and amir can’t beat SRK in any category whether it’s Awards,FFAwards,Consistency,Stardom,Hits…so and so even if they got a next birth..

so now you can win in this way;mocking him, making fun of him, calling FF as F Fake and you may call national award as fake if SRK receive one or two more…

now go for more…..at least you may have some relaxation after posting that…
