Economics of Aamir Khan’s Talaash

Released in theatres last weekend, Talaash has collected approximately 65-67 crores at the domestic box office in it’s first week. With the release of Khiladi 786 this weekend, the Aamir Khan starrer is unlikely to cross the 100 crore mark and should end it’s theatrical run at 90-95 crores nett.

A lot readers here have been asking us about the costs and the price at which the theatrical rights were sold to Reliance. Details below..

  • Total costs: Talaash was made on a budget of Rs 45-47 crores including print and marketing.
  • The budget does not include Aamir Khan‘s acting fee. Instead, he will get a share of the profits.
  • Worldwide theatrical rights: Sold to Reliance for Rs 60 crores.

Recovery – Revenue generated (Note: Approximates)

  • Music rights: 4 crores
  • Home video rights: 2 crores
  • Overseas Distributors share: 20 crores (expected)
  • Domestic Distributors share: 45 crores (expected, if the film does 90-95 crores nett)
  • Satellite rights: 40 crores
  • Total recovery: 111 crores

Overall, Talaash will be a profitable film for all involved – Reliance and the producers (Aamir Khan, Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar).

  • Only salman and shahrukh khan have given 3 back to back 100 crore aamir also missed and akshay also missed after the disaster of joker and singham did not cross 100 crore it’s collections are 97.79

  • big big disappointment …..after a long time aamir come back wid useless effort…..hahaahahah 2 boring movie………

  • Salman Bhai, No Matter What The Critics, Media, And People Say, You Are Currently Number One You Have Been A Role Model To Us Back In The Days, And Up To This Day. We Hope As Fans, That You Continue To Rule Bollywood And We All Hope And Pray That All Of Your Upcoming Films Do Extra Ordinary Bussinus At The Box Office………
We Love You Bhai We Really Really Love You.

  • ignorant ppl laughin at talaash’s collections bt i laugh at dem coz dey r wastin their valuable money on crappy movies

  • according to book my show & many other trade sites buzz for k786 in multiplexes is average… talaash will not get affected hugely…& can still cross 100 crores..but even if it crosses 85 crores it will be more than enough since the genre of film is most difficult to score at….

  • Competition is not very good…
    5 BIG films(JTHJ,SOS,Talaash,K786,Dabangg 2) in Nov-Dec and Only 2 films JTHJ(already) and Dabangg 2(Most likely) touched 100+cr nett at Domestic and 200+cr Worldwide Gross…

  • K786 is more danger than Talaash because only 2 weeks collection and extra 2cr is lifetime of K786…
K786 wont survive even film is masterpiece as Dabangg 2 will dominate all screens of K786 because “Its India not USA”…
India have Only max 4500 screens for bollywood(JTHJ+SOS=4200) while USA have 36250 screens
and Hollywood have no problems at Boxoffice Running….

  • Talaash has to collect 30 cr plus in 2nd week in order to reach 100 cr nett mark that too competing with “Khiladi 786”. Film will be out in 4th week with massive release and might be the biggest release ever of “Dabangg 2”.

  • even indicine team hasn’t cared to write a boxoffice prediction for k786…this shows that buzz for k786 is avg….

    my prediction fr k786:-

    1st day:- 11 crore

    if good:- weekend :-40 crore

    1st week:- 65 crore

    2nd week:- 30 crore

    lifetime:- 95- 100 crore

    verdict:- hit

    if average:-
    weekend:-36 crore

    1st week:- 57 crore

    2nd week:- 25 crore

    lifetime :- 85 crore

    verdict:- above avg

    if bad:-

    weekend:- 33 crore

    1st week :-46 crore

    2nd week;-18crore

    lifetime:-66 crore

    verdict:- flop

no offense to akki fans as i myself like him…..
but if k786 fails / does avg buisness…then it is proved that salman khan is the only superstar who can give atbbs despite any genre!

  • @tejas
Dont be cheap fan of Salman because you just said Sallu can give ATBBs despite any genre….
    LOL,Are you kidding???
Last 4 films are same genre(ACTION)….Get it?

I respect Salman but He wont give ATBBs in different genre like Romance,Drama,Thriller…
    I feel Sallu’s future films always ACTION…

  • I wonder How many screens will have Dabangg 2?
    ETT was 3300 screens and JTHJ+SOS was 4200 screens…
    So maybe 3500-3800 for D2.
we wont surprise if D2 collected 20+cr on 1st day non holiday…

  • @ raj….actually i meant different….i meant that just signing a masala film won’t make any actor mega star….like srk has signed chennai express …but we canot guarantee success of chennai express to be very huge as of salman films…? thats what i wanted to say….sry to hurt any1s sentiments…

  • Maine pyaar kiya : Romantic..atbb
Hum apke hai kaun :Family drama…atbb..

only salman khan nd his screen presence…whtever may be the Genre…it doesn’t matter for A Real Salman Khan Fan…

  • @tejas
    Honestly,SRK’s Chennai Express & Aamir’s Dhoom 3 is same target audience where Sallu’s last 4 films have…
So We can not say that Sallu’s films in 2013 will again TOP of the year and Sallu’s films are in danger from Chennai Express,Dhoom 3 and Krrish 3…

  • @ raj…well if u don’t follow boxofficeindia website…then almost all websites (including taran, komal) have declared ready, bodyguard & ett as atbbs….

& ready was of comedy genre, bodyguard romantic…(promoted as action)…& only ett was asction genre…
so he has delivered atbbs in all genres :-drama,masala, action, romance , comedy….only no atbb in thriller…

  • @lil w_yne
Lol,I’m talking about Today where Action masala films are strong…JTHJ touched 100+cr and Talaash became HIT today because Of SRK and Aamir…
Dont forget London dreams,ms aur ms khanna and more in last 10 years…

  • @tejas
I mean Sallu wont give ATBBs in PURE genre…
Dont you see ACTION in ready, bodyguard???
Thats enough Mass will like that film…

  • @raj

i mean ..r u salman khan fan or film critic….???
who talking abt flop films of salman’s..tht too belongs to romantic genre..

    u hvn’t seen..maine pyar kiya???…pure..romantic movie ever…

u talking abt today’s condition..ha..why he still doing action nd action…
best way Go nd ask Mr.Salman Khan..he’ll give u detailed info…

  • K786 has been reviewed by Taran Adarsh on hungama and as I suspected it is a no logic brainless film with a dozen loopholes in his script. As I mentioned earlier in the week, I now fully expect Talaash to get a repeat audience at the metro multiplexes in these next two weeks before Badass Chulbul arrives. I love Salman but also love Aamir too so hope Talaash can on average collect 20 crores for another two weeks and rightfully join the 100 crore club which was rightfully opened by Aamirs Ghajini. PS gonna watch Talaash again this coming week again but I was born in the 70’s so I do love the occasional masala film so will watch K786 as a time pass affair. Come on guys lets watch hindi movies for what they are and not expect perfection from every movie every friday!!! God bless us all.

  • @lil w_yne Actually I’m fan of SRK…
I know Mpk was pure Romantic film and one of my fav..
But Do you think Sallu will give ATBBs in Pure Genre except ACTION in Today???
if we tell salman then no doubt Sallu will tell that He’s nervous about doing different film after
    consecutive flops before Wanted release…
Overall Remake and Dabangg saved Salman,I’m not Hater of sallu and I do respect him too…
    BUT Fact is Fact…
