Does Shahrukh Khan fix Filmfare Awards?

We answer some questions by Dr R C Patel from the all new ASK US section.

1. Would you know when, if ever, will Hrithik Roshan’s wax-work image be unveiled at Madame Tussaud’s or was that news false?

There was a strong rumour in April that Hrithik will be immortalized at Madame Tussauds. Turned out to be just another false rumour. Must happen sooner rather than later though.

2. Is it true that SRK has got some hidden connections with Filmfare and other award juries? Always wondered why he would win for mediocre performances in Devdas, DDLJ, DTPH and KKHH. Why is he even nominated for horrible performances in Don, KANK and OSO? Is it a must that all his roles have to be nominated? Why are award juries afraid of him?

Hmm.. strong words but a very controversial question. Let us just say, SRK is quite close to the Times group. To his credit, he is brilliant with Public relations (PR). You might find this article interesting – Go here

And regarding your point that he didnt deserve the nominations, Filmfare tends to go the popular way. That’s the reason there are 2 best actor categories. Best Actor Critics and Best Actor Popular. Most of SRK movies for which he was nominated, were blockbusters at the box office and very popular characters. Again, lets give him his due credit. He did perform exceedingly well in DDLJ although the rest of the movies that followed were just different versions of his same old character (Raj).

Back to Filmfare awards, they haven’t been very consistent with the Popular awards. In 2004, SRK was nominated for both Swades and Veer Zaara. He won the Best Actor award for Swades, a movie that flopped at the box-office. Veer Zaara was a superhit, and easily the more popular performance. Not saying, SRK was better in Veer Zaara, but his performance and character in VZ was more popular than Swades. So to be frank, Filmfare is loosing its credibility.

3. Could you please provide me with some information on the following stars of the yesteryears: Sadhana, Mala Sinha, Nanda. Are they still alive? If so, where are they and what are they doing?

Yes, all of them are alive.

Sadhana fell in love with RK Nayyar (director) on the sets of Love in Simla and married in 1964-65. She is currently living alone and strictly stays away from the media.

Mala Sinha is currently living in Mumbai with her husband. Her daughter, Prathibha Sinha, is a Bollywood actress who has acted in a few movies and is known mostly for her special appearance in the “Pardesi Pardesi” song from Aamir Khan’s Raja Hindustani.

Nanda who lives in Mumbai, never got married. She was engaged to Manmohan Desai, but he died tragically in 1994, an year after they were engaged. Nanda is currently great friends with Waheeda Rehman and stays away from the media.

4. What are these V Shantaram awards? Why was TZP included with this year’s films such as Jodha Akbar? Why did Darshil win Best Actor and not Hrithik for Jodha Akbar?

V Shantaram Awards constituted by the Central Government is named after V Shantaram, winner of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award. The V Shantaram Awards is held every year in November. So films that release between December – November every year is taken into consideration.

We can never really answer questions like why Hrithik didnt win and Darsheel did. These awards are based on votes by the Jury and not the public. Almost all awards in India are in someway or the other flawed. Even the National Award lost its credibility, when Saif was awarded the Best Actor for his performance in Hum Tum!!!!! Unbelievable wasn’t it?

5. When are National Awards for each year presented?

Frankly, we have absolutely no idea when the National Awards are held. If someone who reads this has any info, please enlighten us!

6. Who are the nominees for this year’s filmfare awards for lead actor, male and female?

Nominees for the Filmfare awards 2008 will be announced in January. We would like to add something here. The reason why we feel Filmfare awards is majorly flawed is, movies that release early every year (January – March), seem to have absolutely no chance of winning awards, as the public get over films and performances rather quickly these days. So as Filmfare is 50% Jury and 50% Public it looses out on the later. Public will obviously vote for something that is fresh in their minds.

As of now it looks like Aamir Khan will win the Best Actor award for Ghajini. Although it is quite close between Aamir and Shahrukh.

Hrithik has very less chance as Jodha Akbar released in February and the public is clearly ‘over’ his performance. It would have been a different story altogether if Jodha Akbar had released after October. Finally, we are hoping Naseeruddin Shah gets a nomination for A Wednesday.

Regarding Best Actress, its between Priyanka Chopra for Fashion or Aishwarya Rai Bachchan for Jodha Akbar. Are there any other noteworthy “popular” performance this year?

Our prediction for Best Actor Filmfare Awards Nominations.

1) Aamir Khan for Ghajini (most likely to win)
2) Shahrukh Khan for Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi
3) Hrithik Roshan for Jodha Akbar
4) Farhan Akhtar for Rock On
5) Naseeruddin Shah for A Wednesday. If they decide to go for Popular, Imraan Khan for Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na instead.

  • With reference to Michel’s comments above I have this to say:

    1. A typically capitalist view wherein one is valued solely by one’s earning potential. Just because SRK has been blessed by God’s grace and mercy in that majority of his films are blockbusters, he is elevated by the foolish public to the status of King. The truth is that his acting ability is mediocre and his roles are often shallow and poorly developed. We cannot question why God is so merciful on him, but he should treat his luck (and believe me its just luck) in a more humble manner. Instead he has become more arrogant and more pompous with each success.

    2. It is preposterous to label us as jealous. As I have said over and over again, we have no issue with his success at the box office. That is solely in the hands of God, who can make whoever He wishes successful. Our issue is that there are many other performers who can act, and do act better than SRK. They may not be as successful as he is at the box office, but they have worked hard and displayed far more superior talent than SRK. And yet it is SRK who sweeps away the awards instead of these other more deserving actors. This is where we have an issue. I challenge anybody who can say that SRK is the BEST ACTOR!. He is definitely NOT. Now if we question why he keeps on being nominated and winning the award, does that mean we are jealous? If SRK was humble and noble he would insist that the award should go to the actor who has acted the best and not to the actor who has earned the most. If he did so then I would bow down and agree that he should be king.

    3. In his arrogance and pomposity he often makes tactless comments about his peers in the media and at public functions. He also uses his wealth and his poularity to stop many other good actors from receiving due credit. He is also very self centred and shows no respect for senior members of the industry. That is why he is hated so much. Does he not deserve to be hated if this is how he behaves. His insulting jokes when anchoring filmfare awards 2008 his refusal to budge when requested by Sanjay Leela Bansali to delay the release of OSO, his catty comments about Big B and Salman Khan as co-anchors on TV, all these makes him much disliked. Jealousy is not a factor here.

    4. When Almighty God smiles on one and grants one with charm, wealth, success, fame and power one should take this as Bakshish and use these gifts humbly to promote the standing of the entire industry rather than to promote oneself by putting all the others down unethically. SRK could use his immense popularity to raise bollywood to even higher standard than hollywood. But instead he is too busy ensuring that he remains king.

A very critical but certainly not jealous Dr R C Patel!

Good day to all my friends…

  • I personally feel that either Jodhaa Akbar or A wednesday should win this year’s best film award at the filmfare awards because they were both good movies that didn’t require 8 packs or screaming or glossy item numbers. But it’s not going to happen because the dumb public will vote for their precious srk and give him and his movie yet another award. Chak de india deserved every award it got last year (including srk for best actor) because it was a great movie without srk wearing gay clothes and running after girls. Whereas rnbdj is the same thing so why should it win? And ghajini was a rip off of memento and a remake so that shouldn’t win either. But oh well…i am still trusting filmfare because they could have given it to garbage like oso last year but they gave it to the outstanding tzp and other superb films like rdb and lagaan in the past so they just can’t go wrong and lose all their credibility this year.
But anyways, even if the 2 movies i mentioned don’t win at least the star screen awards had some sense. But then i found out they were conducted by a panel of judges and not the public so i was like OH THAT’S WHY! And because they gave best film to JA and not rab ne bana di jodi sajid gayy babyy khan and his trashy sister farah were offended and decided to insult everyone there. How funny, this is Bollywood people.
    peace x

  • my point of view is aamir should win he acted in ghajini differently as we know that film fare people always gave award ro shah rukh khan because he perform as host and entertain the people aamir khan did not believe in award particularly filmfare when shah rukh awarded for ddlj even lot of people thought at that time aamir will win for rangeela at that time when aamir was present at filmfare when naseeruddinshah annouced winner was shah rukh khan from 1996 aamir is not attending all award function he lost believe in award but he goes to national award which more prestigious than filmfare

  • Dr R.C Patel, I think you need a psychiatrist. How dare you can say that srk fans are foolish. By telling us fools you have made mockery of yourself. People like you are questioning the credibility of filmfare awards just because srk wins it number of times. If that is so then I can also say national awards also do not have any credibility because srk has not got it yet. If you are so unhappy of srk winning the filmfare awards always, kindly proceed to court and take legal action against filmfare and srk, pls dont waste your time writing nonsense comments.

  • I totally agree with you parvez. The public who spend their time, money etc. to watch the srk movie are not only upper class, but middle class and lower class also. So if srk doesn’t know acting, if he is the only arrogant person on earth as described by Mr. R.C Patel, then why would these middle class and lower class people go to watch srk’s movie and waste their hard earned money. It’s only because srk movies entertains these people, ok he doesn’t know any acting as described by Mr.R.C Patel but he has that unique charisma and style which know other actor has which easily connects him with the masses, it’s as simple as that and that is the reason he has such a massive fan following. By calling srk fans fools, I can only say that Dr R.C Patel has himself confirmed that he is the biggest fool alone in 3.2 billion srk fans worldwide.

  • rc patel has lost its mental balance. I am sure he doesn’t know about srk’s dominance in bollywood. I agree that luck plays an important in every persons career but how many times. Srk has given countless super hit films and this is the mixture of his all round abilities i.e. his acting, his charisma, his style and not only luck, itna to mujhe apne 5 saal ke bete ko bhi nahi samjhana padta hai, how you become a doctor, or is it you borrowed the certificate.

  • not at all SRK gets awards on the basis of merit if he does the best acting and gives the best performance every year that is his fault of course he will get the award because his performance was outstanding in DON2

  • i jst wanna ask a simple question to ol d people who illogically, irrationally say dat SRK “the KING of bollywood” buys d awards….. Y DONT AKSHAY , AMIR , N OTHERS BUY??
dont dey hav money r dey dnt hav dat much of AUDACITY dat dey cnt buy it…..
so ol u people jst cut d crap….. stop tokin senseless stuff…. srk deserves n so he gets…
its jst ur fav actors dnt gt awards so jst fr ur satisfaction u blame D KING! ….. n it hardly matters..
jst watch out SRK taking away d so called bought awards…. or help ur fav actors wid sum finance so dat dey cud njoy d award @lest fr 1ce … ;p ;) 3:)

  • Shahrukh deserve all 8 Best Actor filmfare Awards. Bcoz all these films he did fabulous Job. If shahrukh would have fix filmfare then why cant he won 2011 best Actor Award for Don 2.(excellent Job) and also this year 2013 his film JTHJ hasn’t nominated for Best Film(which it deserve).
