Dilwale Movie Review

Dilwale is without doubt the biggest film of the year. The star cast comprises of some of the biggest names in the industry – Shah Rukh Khan, the king of romance, a man who continues to be a top superstar even after 24 years in the industry. He reunites with his iconic leading lady, Kajol. The film also has the industry’s rising star, Varun Dhawan and the beautiful Kriti Sanon. Dilwale is directed by Rohit Shetty, who has established himself as one of the most popular filmmakers in the country. The man behind hugely successful films like the Golmaal series, Singham series and Chennai Express. Has Team Dilwale succeeded in delivering a good film? Let’s find out.

Story: We do not want to reveal the plot here, because there are plenty of twists and turns in Dilwale. Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Mira (Kajol) fall in love, but circumstances separate them. Years later, the two meet again. Raj’s brother Veer (Varun Dhawan) is a mechanic, he falls in love with Ishita (Kriti Sanon) and wants to marry her, but Ishita’s sister is against their marriage. Meanwhile, local gangster King (Boman Irani) has a challenger to his local supremacy in the mysterious but powerful Kaali.

Review: Dilwale is a film that is designed to please every section of the audience. It was evident from the promos that the film has romance, comedy, action and emotion.. but by the time the closing credits roll, Dilwale ends up offering a lot more than it promised. It’s not only an entertaining film, but a celebration of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. For fans who love the on-screen jodi, it simply cannot get better than Dilwale. The chemistry that they share in Dilwale is their best since Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

The first half is fast-paced, the action sequences are terrific and Shetty’s trademark car stunts have received a massive upgrade. A crispier and shorter second half would have enhanced the impact of Dilwale, as the film stagnates after the interval. The music composed by Pritam is arguably the best of 2015. Gerua is a visual treat, Janam Janam is beautifully picturised. The background score is good.

There was tremendous speculation around the length of Varun Dhawan’s role in Dilwale. There were reports that he had a meatier role than Shah Rukh in the film, which is absolute rubbish. Diwale is a SRK – Kajol film from start to finish. Varun has very little to do in the first half, but gets plenty of screen time in the second.

Scenes that we liked in Dilwale:

  • Shah Rukh Khan’s Dabangg inspired action scene in the first half of Diwale.
  • The flashback sequence where SRK woos Kajol and the chemistry that they rekindle on screen will win you over once again. Sure, Shah Rukh looks way older than his flashback character, his makeup and that weird lipstick, looks odd at times.. but when it comes to on-screen romance in a Bollywood film, it simply cannot get better than Shah Rukh Khan. He conveys so much just through his eyes.
  • Kajol is terrific in the important twist that takes place mid-way through the film.
  • The comedy scene in the second half between Johnny Lever, Varun Dhawan, Varun Sharma and Boman Irani is howlarious.
  • The last 20 odd minutes will make you laugh and cry. It has a bit of everything.
  • There are some small but sweet moments in Dilwale that are intended to evoke a sense of nostalgia. Varun’s tribute to Shah Rukh, the iconic ‘Bade Bade Deshon Mein’ dialogue.

Acting: Shah Rukh Khan is outstanding in Dilwale. Romance is his forte, but he also excels in action. Kajol is terrific, no other actress could have done justice to the role. In fact, Dilwale wouldn’t work without SRK – Kajol. Varun Dhawan has a funny role to play, he does well. Kriti Sanon looks pretty, she has very little to do in the film. Varun Sharma is fantastic. Johnny Lever, Sanjay Mishra and Boman Irani are exceptional with their comic timing. It’s good to see Johnny Lever in a big film like Dilwale. Vinod Khanna and Kabir Bedi have a couple of small scenes, they enact their parts well.

Overall, Dilwale belongs to Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. It’s a ‘love wins against all odds’ kind of film, with a bit of comedy and action. A perfect family entertainer and the most entertaining action-romantic film of Rohit Shetty’s career. The story is not designed to make sense, but unlike most of his other films, Rohit does have a story to tell here.

Positives:

  • Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol. If you love them and their films, stop reading and book your tickets.
  • Masses will love the action, both adults and kids will like the car stunts
  • Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra excel in their roles
  • Good music
  • Visual treat
  • Family entertainer
  • Production design

Negatives:

  • Comedy doesn’t always work
  • Pace dips in the second half

Rating: ★★★★☆

  • @indicine how is dilwale the biggest film of the year, when BB is the highest grosser of the year and will remain so with the most highest foot falls record in this decade and the only 2nd film to cross 300 cr in india. then how is dilwale the biggest film of the year? please be accurate.

  • Folp flop flop ..bad movie of rohit shetty ..you gave #Prdp-4 star and #Bajrangibhaijaan-3.5star #Hny-4 star means it’s like hny and prdp ..flop

  • Book my show has only 55 % likes for dilwale n those r from ones who have seen it means srk fans n bajirao mastani has 85% likes…just see the difference…even prdp had 66% likes

  • Indicine your review above adds to much sweetness to a other wise dumb movie
Honestly not up to the mark
Excepted Chennai express type entertainer but way below that
Will not survive after the initial hype

  • Wish dilwale the best, but review indicine give these days for star films,be it sallu, srk and akki its if they were writen by their fans, everything is positive. The biggest thing people are saying in their reviews especially the neutrals is that its very predictable.

  • One thing I must say when this site gives review to movies 4 star that time movie turn out average / crap and when they gave 3.5 star then it’s turn out good / bb

  • Oh what the movie ! DILWALE Jst gave the rating on imdb 9 by me
it has got nearly 8/10 there whereas BM – 6/10
Movie has been loved by public across all india !
90-95% occupancy in single screens of kolkota !

  • Only one thing I would like to request to fan bases of all actors is that please don’t politicise the controversy about srk’s comments.
Let’s separate the business prospect of movie from any comments made by a star since there are so many lives which are dependent on the success or failure of any movie.
Today it has happened to srk tomorrow it might happen to your favourite star.

  • Haha indicine we knew it but the damage has been done as there r many negative reviews coming in…although i expected 4.5 from u but u r not that much loyal to ur star…bajirao all the way

  • Omg again 4 star..never mind gonna love the movie sure..my hometown friends loved movie..going today wid my friends in pune..excitement at peak.

  • Hahaha sum people comparing it with himmatwala , humshakals even action Jackson rofl what can we expect from this movie better watch other movies

  • Shah Rukh Khan looks hot in his bearded avatar and for many, that could only be the selling point of the film. He pulls off the character of Raj with much ease and performs exceptionally well in the action scenes where he shows a lot of agression. He even gets a Shahenshah type entry in one of the scenes as he walks out of a door with a dark shadow. His extreme comfort with Kajol is quite visible in the romantic scenes.

Kajol is back after a hiatus of five years and well, she not just looks a little different but acts too. It seems the gap has got the actress a little out of touch and hence in certain scenes, she seems too artificial. Although, peculiarly when her character has a major twist in the first half, she comes off as extremely charged up.

Varun Dhawan may have given a breakthrough performance with Badlapur but in Dilwale he seems to be back in his Student Of The Year and Main Tera Hero Days. His comic timing is good but he fails to excel in any particular scene in the film.

Kriti Sanon is just a pretty face in Dilwale.Other than looking Ms. Perfect she does not have much to do.

Varun Sharma as Siddhu is Varun Dhawan’s sidekick. His comic timing is as always bang on.

Sanjay Mishra as Oscar Bhai is brilliant. It is unbelievable how he can pull off films such as Aankhon Dekhi, Masaan and yet do something as crazy as Dilwale.

Boman Irani as King is quite boring. The character itself is highly unnecessary in the plot.

Mukesh Tiwari and Pankaj Tripathi do a decent job as Shah Rukh’s sidekicks in the film.

    2.5 stars

  • Rohit Shetty is most garbage director ever seen. His all movies are south based masala & have no message for society & damaging our Bollywood. Dilwale is that much ahead of them.

    Rating: ?????

  • hahahahaha indicine biased to srk
