By the end of its second weekend, Bahubali 2 will become the first ‘Indian’ film to cross the 1000 crore (gross) mark worldwide. But Hindi Cinema’s biggest ever grosser, Dangal, does have a chance to become the first ‘Hindi’ film to gross 1000 crore worldwide.
Dangal, which is still running to very good occupancy at a select few theatres in India, has collected Rs 723 crore worldwide. It needs to collect $43 million from China and Taiwan (where it’s already setting records) – which is a huge total – but the possibility cannot be ruled out given the box office pull of Aamir Khan in the most populous country in the world.
Aamir is the only Indian actor who commands a following in China and his previous films have all set records for Hindi films in the country. The actor has
3 Idiots went on to collect $2.25 million (nearly 15 crore), Dhoom 3 did very well and ended up becoming the highest Indian grosser in China with collections of $3.15 million.
Then came PK, which was record-breaking. It released on 4600 screens, collected nearly $1 million on its opening day, $2.5 million on its second day and $1.9 million on its 3rd day. The first weekend business was $5.4 million. The lifetime collections of $19.5 million was nearly four times its first weekend collections.
See the trend? Dhoom 3 collected 40% more than 3 Idiots and PK collected 517% more than Dhoom 3. PK and 3 Idiots were the more superior films with ’emotion’ playing a big role, while Dhoom 3 was an action film – which still managed excellent collections because of Aamir’s presence. It has to be noted here that ‘Happy New Year’, ‘My Name Is Khan’ and few other Hindi films were washouts in China.
Now, with Dangal managing to garner more hype than any other Indian film (including PK), the expectations for the first weekend itself is as high as $10 million. If those numbers are achieved, a $40 million plus lifetime will be well within reach – giving the film a chance to cross the 1000 crore worldwide mark at around the same time as ‘Bahubali 2: The Conclusion’.
Aamir Khan has gone all out to promote ‘Dangal’ in China, spending nearly a week in the country. The film releases in Chinese theatres on May 5.

Dangal might become alltime highest grosser but by the end of this weekend, baahubali enters 10 Billion rupees club. Even with great following in both countries it might not pull more than 20 million dollor in the weekend. so deal with it.
