The top superstar in the industry vs the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful director of the current century. The director of films like 3 Idiots, PK and the Munnabhai series, Rajkumar Hirani, has confirmed that his next film will release during the Christmas weekend this year.
In a statement, the director said “It (Sanjay Dutt biopic) goes on the floors today, January 14, and Sanju will give the clap. We are one big family. We hope to wrap it up by June and are targeting a Christmas 2017 release”
He added “It’s not a film about guns, drugs and the underworld. It’s a feel-good film about a father-son relationship with Paresh Rawal playing Sunil Dutt and Ranbir as Sanju. A buddy film with Sanju’s many friends adding up to one from the US, played by Vicky Kaushal”
It could be one of the most interesting clashes of all time, as Salman Khan has already booked the biggest weekend of the year for his keenly-awaited film ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ directed by Ali Abbas Zafar.
On star-value, there is absolutely no comparison. Salman Khan is light years ahead of Ranbir Kapoor when it comes to sheer pan-India box office pull and ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ is likely to be far more commercial too. But the factor that could tilt the clash in favour of the ‘Sanjay Dutt biopic’ is going to be content. The audience, especially at multiplexes where the ticket prices are high, do not usually spend on two films in the same week. Instead, they pick the better film.
The momentum shifts quite quickly too, like we have seen when Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale clashed at the box office during Christmas in 2015. Dilwale held a huge lead on the first day, but failed to sustain. Bajirao Mastani went from strength to strength, convincingly winning the clash by a fair margin.
The problem for ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ could be bigger, because a Rajkumar Hirani film has never failed at the box office and his films tend to be far more entertaining and commercial as compared to a Sanjay Leela Bhansali magnum opus.
However, unlike the previous two occasions when his films smashed all-time records – Hirani doesn’t have a major superstar like Aamir Khan, who lends tremendous reach to his films. This time around, he has the most promising actor from the younger generation of stars.
The power that a banner like Yash Raj Films has in distributing films cannot be ignored either, it’s their biggest film of the year, a costly one too. They are expected to go all out to make ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ the biggest film of the year.
Against any other actor or director, Salman would’ve smashed his way through. Even Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who first announced his film for Christmas, decided to keep his ‘Padmavati’ a full month away from ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’.
But Rajkumar Hirani, if in form, is in a different league altogether.
Update: To add one more point, budget-wise the clash will heavily be in favour of the ‘Dutt Biopic’. ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’ will be one of the costliest films of the year.

Aamir holds top 2 highest grossers of all time. Dangal and pk are the top 2 highest grossers. Then how come salman is top superstar? Get a life moron. Whenever this big superstars – so called big superstars clash, they end up getting smacked….Srk vs SLB – SLB won and Srk is still trying to recover from that decline….Now Salman who till now has enjoyed release without any clash will get thrashed….Not because of RK but because of the biggest director in the history of Indian cinema, Rajkumar Hirani
There’s no doubt that TZH opening weekend will be huge regardless of it clashing with another movie or not.
the question is how well made movie #dutt is. Depending on that we will know if it can sustain monday onwards or not.
If released solo TZH would have crossed 300+ even if it is the worst movie of 2017 simply because of salman’s superstardom. But if #dutt is not upto the mark then Ranbir can forget about ever gaining a superstar status. If Raju Hirani cannot give you that much needed big grosser then nobody in the industry can.
To sum it up very bad decesion from Raju and team. if the clash happens I see TZH going PRDP way. Huge weekend then crash but eventually if got to safety cause of the huge weekend. But for Raju film the if the content is not upto the mark(highly likely IMO considering the subject). Then Ranbir’s stardom is over(he will always be a critics favorite but not a box office star) and raju is gonna give us his first flop and people will lose the immense faith that they have on him.

I have doubt in the ability of Ali Abbas Jafar as a director. Sultan was good but his previous films like ‘Gunday’ and ‘Mere brother ki dulhan’ weren’t such well made films. Plus ‘Ek that Tiger’ was a Kabir khan directed film and we all know what a terrific director he is. I doubt if Ali Abbas can acquire Kabir’s thought process from that film.
Again there’s Katrina Kaif. Who’s a really bad actress. Ali had Anushka in sultan, who gave a terrific performance. How can we even expect Katrina to give a good performance and change things around.
Ali Abbas was nothing before making a film with salman khan. He gave only one good film, how can anyone have faith in his ability to be consistent.
On the other hand,
Raju Hirani has a tremendous track record. He has given us such great films that we should be thankful to him. Without Raju we could’ve never got a ‘3 idiots’ or ‘pk’. But I surely don’t have any doubts about the ability of Raju Hirani as a director. Also as a writer you can expect a solid script from him.
Also There’s Ranbir Kapoor who has bad past with Salman and Katrina. If he ever wants to prove himself then he’ll never get another chance like this.
I don’t think Raju Hirani is doing this for free publicity. He’s not like that.
In terms of Good acting and solid script, hands down the winner will be ‘Dutt’.
But when it comes to scale, Tiger Zinda Hai will emerge as the winner.
Finally, the box office result of ‘Jagga Jasoos’ and ‘Tubelight’ will decide a few things too.

Dutt: 7-8 crore

TZH: 290-320 crore
Dutt: 50-70 crore
We need to keep in mind that YRF is backing TZH, so the screen count will be 3500 for TZH and 2000 for Dutt bipoic.
If the clash is averted then TZH lifetime collection my cross 400 crore.

I read all the cmnts n everywhere not only in this site n now I realised maximum people supporting Ranbir so Salman bhai should avoid the clash not bcoz of Rk n Raju hirani…no doubt Salman is a huge star n has a huge stardom but still life is unpredictable…kab kya ho jaye kah nahi sakte.
