According to UTV Motion Pictures, Chennai Express has collected Rs 33.12 crore on its opening day at the domestic box office. The Shahrukh Khan starrer has smashed all previous box-office records including the opening day (and highest single day business) record set by Ek Tha Tiger last year during Eid.
The film has collected close to Rs 40 crore, including paid previews on Thursday.
Today (Saturday) is a holiday in most parts of the country, so the drop is unlikely to be as huge as Ek Tha Tiger, which collected Rs 14.52 crore on Day 2 – a drop of 55% from its record opening day.
We expect Chennai Express to collect around Rs 85 crore in its first weekend. The SRK – Deepika Padukone film also has a reasonably good chance to be the fastest film to 100 crore.

@xrate Again I must reiterate Congrats to Team Shetty for getting so much money for what really was a documentary on depressed passengers on board Thakurs train…! The film got 3 out of 5 from me and all things being equal, it could beat Readys record, Rowdy Rathores record and perhaps get close to D1 and Bodyguard. Thats about as high as Im willing to go, it has little repeat value for masses and the dubbing towards the final scene/s was all over the place so will leave the class audiences scratching their heads. Think monday will be Chennai Depress’ last day in the station sorry theatres. I pray you get a ticket for you and your rugby union team of aliases as you ‘guys’ definitely deserve to be truly depressed by this documentary the most out of all srkians…! :-P

The most trusty site WIKIPEDIA states that ” The film’s Hindi version went on to collect 29.25 crore (US$4.9 million) on its first day, thus making it the second highest Hindi opening day of all time behind Ek Tha Tiger.” And u r saying that 33.12.. What is the difference plz tell me.
