Chennai Express Advance Booking: Detailed Report

The advance booking of Chennai Express is on across the country. The film will be releasing on around 700-800 screens at multiplexes tomorrow, with an average of 5-6 shows per multiplex. A few multiplexes have cramped in as many as 12-13 shows on Thursday itself, which was possible only because of the films short runtime (2 hours 22 mins).

Before we get to the advance booking response, lets talk a little on why postponing the film by a day (from 8th to 9th Aug) was a masterstroke by UTV Motion Pictures and Shahrukh Khan. Since Chennai Express is now releasing on a normal Friday, single-screens will be running the film for a minimum of 7 days, from 9th to 15th August. What that effectively means is, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara will only have a partial release on the day of its release – full-fledged at multiplexes, but very limited release on a National holiday for Independence Day. So, Chennai Express will get 3 holidays (including Sunday) at single-screens, while OUATIMD will miss out on a major holiday.

Chennai Express

We have said this before, we say it again, Ekta Kapoor should never have postponed her film. There are rumours that it was a political decision (Raj Thackeray), while others say Shahrukh Khan requested Jeetendra to postpone the film. Either way, even though it was Balaji who first announced their film for Eid, Chennai Express has walked away with the best release date of the year! And what’s more the film will have a massive release at multiplexes on 8th August.

Now, coming to the advance booking, it is phenomenal all over. There are reports that entire shows have been block-booked by corporates at quite a few places. Quite a few exhibitors, distributors and trade gurus that we spoke to, are confident that Chennai Express will open to record-breaking numbers. More so because, ticket prices at multiplexes have been hiked quite significantly. The average all India hike is around 10-15%, a few exhibitors haven’t increased the ticket prices, but a few theatres have increased the price by as high as 30-35%.

City-wise Advance booking, the detailed report.

1. Mumbai City – Huge release in Mumbai on Thursday, Chennai Express is releasing in around 90 theatres on more than 140-150 screens! The advance booking is quite good, given the fact that not many are even aware of the fact that it is releasing on Thursday evening. About 35-40% tickets have been sold so far.

2. Bangalore – Excellent response in Bangalore, with quite a few shows sold out. Tickets are still easy to find, but if you live in Bangalore and plan to watch the film on Thursday, book your tickets soon. 50-60% tickets sold out as of Wednesday evening.

3. Hyderabad – Limited release on Thursday here. At the time of writing this, advance booking was open at around 10-12 screens. The response is outstanding, most shows sold out in advance!

4.  Mangalore – Only two multiplexes in the small coastal city of Mangalore. One multiplex is running 8 shows on Thursday, and the advance book is around 20-25%. The other has around 5 shows on two screens. Booking opened late yesterday evening, shows are filling up quickly.

5. Kolkata – The city of Shahrukh Khan! He is insanely popular here, and that reflects in the advance booking. Very few people buy tickets in advance here, but a few shows of Chennai Express are about 80-90% booked! The film will do well in Bengal.

6. NCR Region – Some theatres screening as many as 14 shows here! Advance booking pretty good, around 40-50% tickets sold out. A select few shows are sold out.

7. Chennai – Even though the title has ‘Chennai’, the film has a huge competitor in Vijay’s Thalaivaa which also releases on 9th August. But advance booking for the Tamil film was stopped because of ‘violent theatres’ from certain political outfits. There is uncertainty over the Tamil films release here, which might be a massive boost for Chennai Express. The advance booking for CE is good for Thursday, most shows are filling up pretty quickly.

8. Patna – The capital city of Bihar has seen a good response too. Apart from one multiplex (Cinepolis), most are running only two shows on Thursday.

9. Chandigarh – Wide release here, but the advance booking has been pretty poor. Only about 10% tickets sold.

10. Valsad – Lukewarm response in one of the cities in Gujarat.

Overall, Chennai Express is certain to break the ‘preview shows’ record which is currently held by 3 Idiots (2.75 crore). But this will also be the widest release for any film the day before its full-fledged release.

    Leave it guys.
Andhe ko rasta dikhana aasan hai par Andhe ka dhonk karne wale ko rasta dikhana “mushkil hi nahi namumkin hai”.

    @Noman
if you are not got ticket & finding tickets is really hard as you said then i don’t know it is sad thing or joyfull.

But if the condition really same as you said(which not looking to me & indicine) then first day CE will be atleast 95% opening.

ETT with 95-100% collected 33 crs.
CE with 95% with more screens & high ticket price atleast collect 40 crs.

So its great & hope we see it on Saturday morning.

Unless it will be like liking trailer on youtube with fake id’s.

  • One more thing i want to say before going to sleep,it may sounds funny & don’t know indicine will publish it or not but please guys publish it.

Noman said booking 6 tickets at a time is impossible & in all screenshots shown by indicine just 6 tickets are sold.

It may be coincidence but funny.
    Good Night guys.

  • Actually the release is so wide that tickets are easily available
CE WILL CREATE HISTORY FOR SURE

  • If 1st day collections are around 28-30cr than its possible to cross 200cr mark as ett and yjhd going fo this mark with average response if 1st day around 20cr than not possible my thought 26cr 1st day 150cr lifetime thankyou

  • sorry here it’s about only “Chennai Express” ,not for other movies like Krrish 3 .Dhoom 3 …..I’m sure Krrish 3 will be awesome too,but…..here it;s about for CE,not for him.I think CE will be famous and blockbuster !

  • ce will be flop just will earn money bcoz of huge screens and holiday season film will be ultimate blunder lyk ra.one

  • Chennai express releasing in UAE on thursday itself as it is EID here. I already booked the tickets for 9:30am and 3:e20pm show!!!!!! Eagarly waiting !!! Guess I will update you the film review before anyone watches in India.

King khan rocks……….. Only King khan is known to arabs here…they just love him..ofcourse all asians – indians, pakistanis, srilankans, bangladeshis are huge fans of king khan than any other actors…. Just waiting and counting time….Here EID prayer will get over early 7am itself unlike in India where EID prayer gets over by 10am. So after prayer, I will just go directly to theater and watch my King khan movie on screen. No other actor has touched my heart like King khan…his acting, emotions truly amazing!!!! Love you king khan…Jab tak hai jaan!!

  • Lol tickets are available and fans like xrate are crying over not getting tickets…! :-(

Ok not to worry, if you cant see the film before me then be patient as I will be writing my review on Chennai Depress on Sat morning. As a srk fan (i wish) I need to see if the unnecessary destruction of perfectly working trains and cars was really worth it by Rohits explosives team. Chennai Depress to collect 123 sorry I meant 12.3 cr on first day is a real possibility now if xrate himself cannot even get hold of tickets for his aliases…! :-P

  • This is happy News For OUATIMD. Wide release affects second week of film in which almost all have watched film. Means OUATIMD gets more Sceen.

  • booking is not in The level of JTHJ Or ETT. May be due to wide release. Less chances of breaking any record except first weakend due to 2 holidays.

  • @ Indicine: Salute for your impartiality. I am not against SRK or Chennai Express, but all the blind fans comparing the films with previous classics, even before watching a reel irritates me.

If it is entertaining and good film I will also see. But I will wait for few days and watch critics review, before spending my hard earned bucks.

  • @indicine

  • I watched Chennai express movie @ 9:30am show, Thursday, Dubai. The movie is really awesome…SRK has done supurb comedy….believe me first 1 hour of the movie will make you glue to the screen for SRK’s comedy!!!!. The DDLJ background music when SRK catching the hand of deepika to get inside the train really bring tears in my eyes to recap the old ddlj days….Amazing!!!!!! I am going again second time tonight!!!

  • Here in the UK, Cineworld Feltham has sold out a couple of screenings for tonight, and Stevenage have added an extra screening at the last minute (I had mine booked for 21:15 but they have just added 20:10)
