Chennai Express dropped by around 65-70% on its 2nd Friday at the box office. A significant dip in business on the first day of the second weekend was pretty much expected as it was working day and Akshay Kumar’s Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara also had a wide release in theatres.
With around 7 crore of business on Friday, Chennai Express has now collected around 164 crore in 8 days (including previews). The Rohit Shetty film is still well on-course to cross the 200 crore mark, but a lot would depend on how well it fares on Saturday and Sunday. If there is any escalation in business for the late evening / night shows today and the entire day tomorrow, Chennai Express will have a very good chance of crossing the lifetime business of 3 Idiots (202 cr) next week.
The film is on a record-breaking spree in South India. Business in cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Coimbatore, Mangalore, Hyderabad, Trivandrum, Cochin and even smaller towns is outstanding. Likely to break the 3 Idiots record by a distance!

Actually 3idiots earned 202 in 8 clear weeks without competition of big release it was release on Christman. Got Muharam holiday on monday, New year holiday, last day of year half day and celebration time for Schools and colleges xmas vacation. Also no competition till new arrival “Veer” on 19th Jan.2011 within these period Records are certain.
No doubt 3Idiot is outstanding and still watchable then any other movie but CE is also good.

Saturday advance bookings for evening and night shows is above 85 percent. which his huge
minimum Saturday would be around 11 CRORES and Sunday also 13 CRORES
so its 164+24 that equals 188 CRORES. so yjhd is history by Sunday

Finally a srk film after years that did some record breaking. The expectations for his next will be sky high.
Though the reviews have thrashed it, i see a trend just like it happened in Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani, where the wom made it a big hit at that time.
People are not saying CE is great or superb, just that it is a good watch and timepass, and i guess that is just than enough for people to flock to theatres after all if someone liked it once, it should be a good entertainer, is the mindset.
One thing is sure, if people like a movie, no matter what a reviewer say or be trashed in forums etc., the general public will go and see it, atleast once, and the population that we are, that is enough to break some records.
This is a big wake up call to all that at the end of the day, it is the general movie going public that decide the fate. Srk finally woke up to this big truth and now reaping the benefits.
Salman realised this with Wanted, and with new records coming, I expect a great competitons between Salman-Aamir-srk-ranbir.
These four are gonna re-write box office history in the coming days, but i also don’t count out Akki, Shahid and HR, as I can’t forget that if people love your movie, no matter who you are, it will collect good returns.

Why there is a confusion in second friday figure. Some site says movie collected 10.5 crs and other sites show 5.5 and 6.75…confused which is correct figure. .whatever the outcome CE is gonna break 3 idiots record by a good margin as the audiences are not impressed with OUTIMD and collection is likely to decrease post weekend which in turn will help CE to post good number

CE will surely collect over 210 cr .. With ouatim getting negative response more screens will be alloted to CE and nxt week release Madras cafe will open maximum with 15% . That too will eat up the screens allotted to ouatim so that leaves CE with two whole weeks with almost no competion..
SRK will surely eclipse and outshine all every record..
I do know that Krissh 3 & Dhoom 3 are comfortable 200cr members, but I’d like to see CE be the first movie to surpass the record set by 3 Idiots.
@xzone, when the film industry is brimming with profits, many financers will risk some amount on small and different projects, because they have the backup.
Also, every other filmmaker will not go for entertainment movies, may be a majority will, but there will always be people who want to experiment, take risks and these huge profits will let them also have a good financial backing, as the investment is generally lesser, and even if loss, the market can take it, but if profit it is huge.
for eg., a movie like peepli live made on 10cr collected 40 cr, that’s 4 times the investment, similarly the movie “Pa”. Who wouldn’t want to get that amount of profit? and success such as this is only possible if you take risk.
however, when the market is down, no businessmen want to invest in risk projects. It is simple business sense.

all who r saying Ce has more screens, holiday period and many excuses even i m anti srk but the point is that no one will remember what was the reason of these collection, because in record book if ce surpass 3I collection than it will call as highest grosser film till date irrespective of reasons and the main thing is that you can release your movie to any holiday period, any favorable condition but 3 id record is safe till now and if ce break this than its only because movie is liked by large section of audiences, its not easy to bring audience into theater after historical weekend but still ce collection surprisingly very good. so kudos to srk,deepika,rohit and CE Team and specially srk fans who are waiting for this.
and after looking CE overseas collection i got my answer srk movies worked there because of srk not due to overseas location and their mindset related content.

@geeone yaa 3 Idiots collected 150 cr after 19 days and srk did in 7 days but i will tell you something interesting though i trust BOI figure but for you i will tell Indicine given official figures.
1. 3 Idiots releases 1250-1300 screen while ce is around 3600 screens so 2.75 times than 3 Idiots. 3i collected around 70 cr in 6 days while ce collected 136.9 cr in sixdays so because ce having screen ce 2.75 times than 3 i than collection would be 2.75*70= 192.5 cr while ce having 136.9 i.e. 1.95 times of 3I so failed here against CE
2. in 7th days CE got 2700 scress 2 times more than 3Idiots, 3I collected 9 cr on 7th day while ce collected 19.6 cr so here ce ahead than 3I though CE 7th day is National Holiday but still ahead
3. on 8th day 3I had same no. of screens around 1300 while ce having 1600 on its 8 days i.c. 1.23 time more than 3I, ce collected 7 cr while 3 idiots 10 cr, as per theory it should collect 1.23*10=12.3 cr but collected 7 cr though 3I 8th day was national holiday but still 3 I ahead of ce.
4. after 8 days 3I collection including paid previews were 90 cr while ce collected 163.4 cr in +days+paid previews so it still collected 163.4/90=1.82 times than 3I in same scenerios while its has 2.75 times higher screen till 6 days
P.S= here i m not degrading ce performance as it definately collected beyond imagination but this is for some moron who underestimating 3I collection and its remarkable content…….
