Celebrating 20 years of Salman Khan, Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke Hai Koun

Exactly 20 years ago, on 5th August 1994, a family drama titled ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ released in theatres. The film was slammed by the critics as a ‘wedding video’, but viewers embraced it like no other film in the history of Indian Cinema making it the highest grossing film of all time.

The film earned Rs 137 crore worldwide and contributed immensely in making Bollywood films family friendly. Hum Aapke Hain Koun is also credited for opening up the overseas market for Indian films.

It won five Filmfare Awards as well as the National Film Award for ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’. It made a lasting impact on wedding celebrations in India, which often include songs and games from the film.

Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Hum Aapke Hain Koun

Ironically, the two main men behind the massive success of Hum Aapke Hain Koun, lead star Salman Khan and director Sooraj Barjatya, are currently shooting for their upcoming film ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’. The man who introduced Salman to the industry 25 years ago with ‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’, will be reuniting with the superstar 15 years after ‘Hum Saath Saath Hain’, in the same year that the actor turns 50!

Sources say, the cast and crew of Hum Aapke Hain Koun have been invited to the sets of ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ in Karjat to celebrate 20 years of Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

Earlier today, actor Anupam Kher tweeted “Happy 20th birthday to one of my most successful and cherished films – HUM AAPKE HAI KAUN. Thank you Sooraj for making this classic.”

And guess what? On the same day that Hum Aapke Hain Koun celebrates 20 years, Salman Khan’s latest release ‘Kick’ has joined the 200 crore club, also making it the highest grossing Salman Khan film ever!

  • @romance disaster: this called height of biasedness. You are considering KANK,RNBDJ,KHNH,Mohaabatein, but ignoring ZNMD,JA,KMG,KNPH,fiza, lakshya. KMG was better than KHNH.KNPH N JA kicked mohaabatein and RNBDJ at award function.

Indicine as per wht i have read earlier, many theathers renovated so tht they can screen HAHK i remember me watching it 3 times in theater as a kid

Also it holds the record for being screened for highest no of days in many theaters , one of them being Relief cinema in ahmd for more then 400 days

    2.HSSH
    3.HAHK
haven’t watched mpk completely.dabbang was damn overrated.by which criteria, it was given best movie award over MNIK? ?

  • Wow!!! The Biggest Blockbuster of Hindi Cinema. Congrats, casts and crew of HANK.

@Indicine, 137 Crores Worldwide? How much does it become today adjusting inflation?

Same streak will continue with PRDP….

  • An evergreen classic..never get bored while watching reruns on Zee Cinema..waiting eagerly for PRDP!!! :)

  • @ Hatred New Year: It is news to me that MNIK & OSO [brainless mad entertainer] are classic pictures. If they are classic then we have to re-define the term. Besides, DTPH & Mohabatein are utterly boring.

Now read the classic picture of Aamir:

    1. QSQT.
    2. Dil Hai Ki Maanta Nahin.
    3. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander.
    4. Rangeela.
    5. Sarfarosh.
    6. Lagaan.
    7. Dil Chahta Hai.
    8. Rang De Basanti.
    9. Taare Zameen Par.
    10. 3 Idiots.

Also, the film that are entertaining and blockbusters [but not classic according to me]:

    1. Dil,
    2. Raja Hindustani.
    3. Ghulam.
    4. Ghazani.
    5. Ddhoom 3.

  • @Navin – You just ruined this article (somewhat, at least comment section), I’m not surprised, though.

Thank you Indicine for taking stand.

  • @ Hatred New Year:

Also, see the varities of genres of your self proclaimed king and the perfectionist.

One more classic PK is round the corner.

  • hum aapke hain kaun is a great slam on critics and haters of Salman overseas opner for big hits. baap of all contempararis..

  • “Hum Aapke Hain Koun” i don’t have words to describe how much happiness this film give me while watching..,

    now eagerly waiting for PRDP…?

  • the best nd my most favr8 film till date…I still remember we went on car at 1am in 1994…to get the cassette from cantt…moreover, had to rent that twice as the film was incomplete…almost 15minutes of running time was short…moreover had to pay the rent 50rps per day…in contrast to other cassettes as the rent was 10rps per day…such were the golden days of my childhood….which are no longer now…as everything now is far more materialistic …
anyways it was a superb movie…enjoyed alot …watching it again nd again with my family…
hv many memories associated with this classic
a golden era of life which has ended…
just 1 word for HAKHK ….
    Nostalgic…

  • Emraan hashmi ‘s classic movies – awarapan, jannat , ouatim , murder2 , murder. Upcoming – raja natwarlal, mr.x, ungli , azharudin biopic , hamari adhuri kahani. And white lies from oscar winning director danis tanovic.

  • @nipin senior 1:59pm that list pretty much sums up your lack of knowledge of 100 yrs of Hindi Cinema…. The legends will look down on you with despair but also thank god that you never reviewed their work as you would most likely compare it to that shambolic list you posted….!

Food for thought- How can you critically assess something when your knowledge of previous works to compare with is so limited to just last 10 yrs… Such are the requirements of becoming a so called critic than anyone can become a critic with just one or two followers like our resident drunk ‘nipin senior’….

  • My Fav films of Ritik:-

    1- Kites
    2- Guzarish
    3- Jadoo Naa Milega Dobara
    4- Yaadein
5- Dhoom 3 (Ritiks legacy was its biggest Attraction- supposedly)

PS no sarcasm here just the honest truth…. I loved Kites immensely bcoz it reminds me of my childhood when I used to fly kites with my cousins but strangely our Kites actually flew in the air for ages unlike this Kite which faltered at the boxoffice…! Guzarish at 2 bcoz I love wildlife /insect documentaries…! Number 3 is a great film bcoz everyone wants to know why Jadoo was not in 1st Rohit film 2006 n 3rd Rohit film 2013 so to have a spin off film showing Ritiks desperate search for his career saving lost toy was great fun…! Yaadein at 4 coz the film was a great opportunity to give audiences a chance to escape the stresses of life whilst watching the film- drift away to a peaceful place during 3 hrs of film- precious moments so thanks buddy. Dhoom 3 at 5- well despite ppl saying Dhoom is all about Ritik it was actually nice to watch a Dhoom film with no Ritik in sight- phew sigh of relief for audiences so it got a large unprecedented number of repetitive viewings from audiences…!

  • @vikarm, in that way ddlj nd kkhh are kajol movies. Ddlj collected 9cr(that time a movie can bcme blockbuster with 9cr collection) less than HAHK with higher ticket price, now u r saying ddlj is bigger hit than hahk…ha..ha…bigest joke of the millenium.

  • niun u dnt knw what is india and indian cinema. mpk is best love story of all times. ur hr is a kid infrnt of Salman and will be always.
