Can Tiger Shroff’s Heropanti recreate the box office magic of KNPH, Maine Pyaar Kiya?

Q: With debutant Tiger Shroff’s Heropanti releasing tomorrow, can any debutant’s film today be the highest grosser of the year like Hrithik Roshan’s Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai and Salman Khan’s Maine Pyaar Kiya? – Kshitij Srivastava

A: Absolutely no chance. Even if it carries the best of reports and word-of-mouth, it’ll still struggle to get anywhere close to being the highest grosser of the year. In fact, even getting to the 100 crore mark would be a massive achievement as the opening day is expected to be around 5 crore.

A lot has changed since the days of Kaho Na Pyaar Hai and Maine Pyaar Kiya. These days, thanks to the rise of multiplexes and competition from other films, the opening day business decides a film’s fate at the box office. Films like Hasee Toh Phasee, Shaadi Ke Side Effects, Highway and many more failed to be huge grossers because the opening was poor. Queen was the only exception, but that film had phenomenally good reports. Heropanti doesn’t look like a film that will do extraordinarily well at multiplexes.

The PR machinery has been in overdrive over the last few weeks, trying to spread positivity around Heropanti. There are also talks that Tiger is going to be the Hrithik Roshan of this decade, but to achieve what Hrithik did in his debut film – not just in terms of box office numbers, but the overall craze and phenomena surrounding him during those days, would not just be incredibly hard for Tiger but any other youngster who makes his debut.

Salman after his debut film was huge too, but the craze for Hrithik was on an altogether different level. Never seen before or after!
