Can Madhuri make a successful comeback with Dedh Ishqiya?

In the 2nd part, film critic and trade analyst Joginder Tuteja answers 5 more questions from our readers. (This article was scheduled to be published yesterday. The delay was due to technical issues)

Can you rank the following biggies in order of their hotness in trade – Dhoom 3 , Dabangg 2, Krrish 3, Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2, Chennai Express? – Javneet

  • We are talking about films, each of which is coming with a potential of comfortably crossing the 200 crores mark just in India. To be fair to these films, they don’t deserve a ranking, at least as of now when even a single frame of any of these hasn’t been revealed yet!

Salman is doing the movies of same genre after ‘Wanted’. Before ‘Wanted’, he tasted failure in many films. Do you think that doing movies of the same genre for a long time would really help Salman prove himself as a good as well as a versatile actor? Will his success last longer if he continues to do the same type of films with no stories but only action? Remember, Akshay couldn’t sustain the success of his comedy films for too long. – Bipin Ghimire

  • You are right on many counts, including the part about similar genre. Yes, Salman has been making films in the same genre. However it would be wrong to say that his films have ‘no story and only action’. No film can work like that. Having said that, this is a phase which Salman is enjoying but for continued success, he would be switching modes in a couple of years time. As for comedies not working for Akshay, if that was the case then ‘Housefull 2’ wouldn’t have turned out to be a much needed superhit for him. If his interim films failed, it was due to various other reasons and not due to comedies being repeated.

Will Madhuri Dixit be able to make a successful comeback with ‘Gulaab Gang’ and ‘Dedh Ishqiya’? What are their prospects? – Rohan

  • No one can predict with utmost certainity around a comeback film turning into a successful or not without seeing a frame of it. Who would have thought that Amitabh Bachchan’s comeback film ‘Mrityudaata’ would be a disaster? Or for that matter Sridevi’s ‘English Vinglish’ would be a hit? Or Karisma Kapoor’s ‘Dangerous Ishhq’ turning out to be a huge flop? Coming to Madhuri’s upcoming films, ‘Desh Ishqiya’ would benefit from the fact that ‘Ishqiya’ was a much liked film and has a good recall value.

Do you think ‘Ghanchakkar’ will be Emraan Hashmi’s first 100 crore movie? Will it be Emraan’s next after Rush? – Sajid

  • After Paresh Rawal ensuring a 80 crores plus collections for ‘OMG! Oh My God’ (and still counting), anything is possible provided there is some cast of repute and the overall package is good. Emraan and Vidya’s last, ‘The Dirty Picture’, had crossed the 80 crores mark as well. With the director of ‘No One Killed Jessica’ (Raj Kumar Gupta) attempting a comedy with the duo, 100 crores is a possibility. However before that, ‘Ek Thi Daayan’ would hit the screens.

Out of the three Khans (Salman, Shahrukh, Aamir), which one according to you has been the most consistent in last 20 years as per box office results? – Gaurav Handa

  • This one is actually a no-brainer. It is simple – Shahrukh Khan!

  • madhuri’s comeback will definitely be a huge hit. so many ppl are waiting to watch her on screen.

and joginderji, dont u think aamir has done more meaningful cinema & nevr gone after the box-office results. his Taare Zameen Par, Rang De Basanti, Lagaan, Dil chahta Hai, 3 Idiots, Jo jeeta Wohi Sikander, Andaz Apna Apna have all been cult classics. has any other khan given such memorable films? the answer is a no-brainer – NO, they haven’t.

  • LOL srk has been consistent… haahaha nice joke joginder ji. Salman Bhai & Aamir sir have been much more consistent. and going by the last 10 yrs, even Hrithik & Akshay have been more consistent than srk. this is TRUE FACT.

  • LOL @ Aamir fans calling him consistent! Aamir was nothing in 90s! Even Govinda films would outgross his films like Ghulam, Ishq, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke!

Aamir’s fees in 90s was half of SRK & his earnings used to be way less than SRK & Salman. We’re talking 20 years here not just post 2001 era!

Aamir fans have habit of calling his average or semi hit films as hits. In reality Aamir has just 10 clean hits in his entire career since 1988 – QSQT, Dil, Raja Hindustani, Rangeela, Lagaan, Fanaa, RDB, TZP, Ghajini, 3 Idiots.
All other films like Sarfarosh, HHRPK, JJWS,DHKMN, AAA, DCH etc. are average/semi hit.

To save face they call his not so successful films as “cults”!

  • In memorable/cult films, SRK gave Swades, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Darr, DDLJ, KKHH, Chak De India, Dil Se, Pardes, DTPH. His Darr, Baazigar, Anjaam were all huge risks – Anjaam may have flopped but other two became super hits. Devdas is also the only Indian film in Time magazine’s top movies of millennium.

Even he has memorable & cult films to his credit. Some recent not so good films don’t mean SRK never did quality cinema. He’s the only actor who never took breaks & never had decades of bad phase like other Khans!

  • Jogi says that the last question is a no brainer which means even a fool would know that srk is the best, srk is the king for 20 years. Wow srk, respect!!!

  • LOL @srk fans calling darr, pardes dtph etc as cult. haha do u know the meaning of cult atleast?
only srk films which have been cult are Chake de India, Swades & ddlj.

@deepu for ur kind info, in the 90s also Aamir did deliver huge hits, though no. of hits were less than srk but srk’s also had more flops than aamir. Aamir always did less movies, but quality movies. Aamir’s success ratio is much more than srk. go check how many flops srk delivered during the 90s.

  • Mr.joginder how come ready is similar to dabangg or bodyguard? Ready is comedy film bodyguard, ett r love and action films, dabangg is masala film…critics r so frustrated abt salman sucess cleary evident here

  • if bazzigar is cult mohra is cult too,jo jeeta wahi sikander is cult….srk so called darr, bazzigar r copied frm hollywood movies due to luck and support yash chopra and salman family srk got sucess

  • well said @joginder sir..

srk is most consistant actor than aamir and salman….yes aamir is also consistant but little bit less than srk…

salman is no where so called consistant as he delivered numerous flops between 2000-2010……………

  • SRK is the most consistent actor for 20 years. Throughout the 90s & early 2000s, there was only one Khan & he was Shah Rukh. Aamir turned a leaf in 2006 & Salman was an also-ran. Akshay & Ajay were never in the running for the top position. Hrithik couldn’t consolidate the super start he had with his first film. Only one actor saw it through. He was compared with everyone & remained put at the top position.

    To all SRK fans,

Don’t indulge in cheap banter with these Salman, Akshay, Aamir & Ajay fans. Whenever a poor person sees newfound wealth, he tries to compare himself with somebody who has always been healthy. The same is happening with these SAAA fans. There’s been only one benchmark in Bollywood in liberalized, post-Amitabh India, & he is SRK. Shove the facts up the throats of these SAAA fans. SRK was, & still is the King Khan for a reason.

  • If last one is a no-brainer, then why did you chose to answer it? and these answers doesn’t make nay sense. even a rickshawwala can give silly diplomatic answers like these. @Indicine, couldn’t you find better critic or trade analyst to do this job?

  • depends on the script, direction and performance.. best of luck for her, but I don’t think that Madhuri would agree to do scenes like Vidya did in Ishqiya ( and that’s the main reason for the success of this movie, otherwise it’d have been a flop movie.. everyone know that Vidya agrees to shoot any scene ( if it wasn’t forbidden she’d have showed up completely naked in a bed with any actor) so I don’t think that madhuri would agree to do such a thing.

  • Sorry, Madh fanz….it’s her 2nd comeback…..just recall Aja Naach lye…it ll be flop…..
She was.is and always be below than Sri ji..
    :( :( :(
My question who is superior Sri ji or Madh…
    Answer simple only sri ji….
see the movie she selected for her comeback….. a complete family movie…
means everyone from kids to old, teenage to young…. everyone could enjoy……
However, for Madh??????? it’s sequel/franchise etc…. of ishqia……which by no means was a family movie..
plus i think that Madh ll never do any cheap/vulgar scenes now at least……

  • The last question can be of frustation for salman n amir fan they can’t accept the truth,if there were amitji’s name with the same no. of hits n flops then they would be appreciating so much,bt becoz its srk, that’s why they r nt able to digest it,consistency is decided by highest grosser films in top,nt by the no. Of flops n hits, srk dose movies r only flopped which he had signed in the begining of his career,as he was new to industry n was widout any godfather, its was important for him to do films,nt like amir n salman who were born to filmmakers

  • Aamir Khan delivered huge hits in 90s? What a joke! He had only Dil, Rangeela & Raja Hindustani as clean hits. All others are average/semi hit/commission earner types.
Less films is just an excuse. He did more films in 90s compared to 2000s decade & it’s a fact he fell behind Govinda & Sunny Deol also – let alone Salman or SRK.

And his films like Ghulam, Ishq, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahi were all run of the mill films. Only JJWS & AAA are cult – and AAA is also a Salman Khan film, not just an Aamir film (it had great script & great ensemble cast too).

Even in cults Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa is no less than JJWS. SRK got special award from Filmfare for it. And won a public choice poll in Movie magazine for best performance for KHKN.
