Brothers Movie Review

Karan Malhotra made the boisterous ‘Agneepath’ remake a few years back and the movie turned out to be a hit and showed Karan’s flair for drama and action. Now, he’s back to remaking another film, this time a Hollywood sleeper hit ‘Warrior’. The original English film has quite a bit of fan following and established Tom Hardy as a star in Hollywood. How well does Karan adapt it to the Indian screens? And how are Akshay Kumar and Sidharth Malhotra in it? Will it be able to match the success of Agneepath?

Story: Garson and Maria Fernandez (Jacky Shroff and Shefali Shah) have a son named David and they lead an average life. Their life changes when Garson turns out to be a cheating abusive husband who had another child Monty from another woman. He brings Monty to live with his wife and David. Unfortunately, the life of the 4 members of the Fernandez family gets turned on its head when Garson ends up getting a prison sentence for something he did. Years pass by, kids become adults. But now the two half-brothers David and Monty are on very bad terms. David (Akshay) has a wife (Jacqueline) and a kid. Monty (Sidharth) doesn’t have a wife as alcohol seems to be his only outlet. A rich promoter decides to conduct a mixed martial arts wrestling tournament in India (Right to Fight). David’s kid has an ailment and he genuinely requires money for treatment. So he decides to participate in the tournament for this prize money. Monty on the other hand decides to take part to redeem himself and his father Garson (who seems like a changed man). The climax ends with the two brothers facing off against each other in an epic fight.

Screenplay and Direction: Karan Malhotra’s love for 90s cinema was revealed when he decided to remake Agneepath for the present times. But Brothers proves that Karan is still stuck in the 1990s when it comes to his creative decisions. The plot devises he chooses, namely a caring elder brother, an abusive father who goes to jail, the destructive younger brother, the sick child, the misplaced item number, are all stuck in the distant past. Unfortunately in his attempt to adapt Warrior for Indian sentiments he has ended up making an outdated, melodramatic and nauseatingly boring version of the film. Brothers flows along at the pace of a sloth in the first half with flashbacks galore. The second half is an improvement but the violence and background score is too jarring for the viewer to truly feel any empathy for any of the characters. Karan has made 2 remakes now and both times he has opted for the overdramatic and over-violent route.

Brothers

Brothers Movie Review

The technical aspects of Brothers is probably the best thing about the film. The production design is top notch and modern, which is a bit ironic since the screenplay is so outdated. The action choreography is slick but it would have been nice to see more technical fighting than the brutal fighting they portrayed. The costume design is stereotypical and gives the catholic characters biblical verse tattoos, and crosses to establish their religion and background. The music is another huge disappointment in Brothers. The Sonu Nigam song seems like an apification of Agneepath’s Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin. The item song Mary is neither groovy nor high on memorability. The background score is too loud and jarring for a movie with a subtle story.

Acting: The major saving grace of Brothers is Akshay Kumar. He salvages the film to a degree and makes it a lot more tolerable than it had any right to be. He is in fine form and his look-change has certainly helped his performance. He gives a moving, gut wrenching performance as David. And he fights like a pro too! Sidharth Malhotra is decent and does well not to overact even if it means veering into the Ek Villain zone. Jacqueline is below par and her incompetence is gazing even though she tries her level best throughout the movie. Jackie Shroff is good as the alcoholic, regretful father. Shefali Shah does well. Ashutosh Rana is very good. Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Kiran Kumar are a welcome addition to the cast.

Conclusion: Brothers is an outdated, boring, overtly emotional and overtly violent movie. The drama should have been brought down 4-5 levels and it would have made for a fascinating case study of characters but the director’s inability to show us the psyche of the main characters is unfortunate. Akshay Kumar gives one of his best performances ever and the action scenes are well choreographed (if you ignore the brutality). If you are a fan of dramatic 1990s cinema and brutal action scenes don’t bother you, then give it a watch. But if your definition of cinema is fast paced, joyful movies then give it a miss.

Positives:

  • Akshay Kumar. Outstanding. Deserved a better film.
  • Production Design
  • Well-shot action sequences (not everyone will like it though)
  • Second half better than the first

Negatives

  • Melodramatic and boring first half
  • Stuck in the 90s feel to it.
  • Background score. Unpleasant.
  • Slow paced film, feels much longer than its runtime.

Rating: ★★½☆☆

  • Come on guys stop spreading the negativity about the movie……
Critics review does not matter what matters is the response from the public which is positive so expecting the collection to be in the range of 20 to 25 crores on day 1…. Haters pehle movie dekho phir baat karo… apne aap me hi critics mat ban jao…….fools…..

  • Watched first show of Brothers it is an awesome movie best performance of Akshay Kumar till date movie definitely will go beyond 150 crore.

But one thing I realized that Varun Dhawan, Arjun Kapoor or Any other new comer was Good choice behalf of Sidarth Malhotra

  • So, this proves that Hrithik alone was the driving force for Agneepath’s success.
Akshay has been appreciated, but Siddharth needs to keep acting as a prop in stupid love stories, he’s too wooden actor.

  • i have not watch yet from bollywood they are praise the movie some bhojpuri’s fan is telling not good m confused eighter going to watch or not .

  • That’s what i was smelling.. whenever a movie receives bad reviews then indicine always post the review with delay..
But as i have tremendous faith in indicine reviews i will skip the movie now.. feeling sad for akki.. he badly needs a superhit.

  • Brothers got mixed reviews:
    indicine- 2.5/5
    filmfare – 3/5
    bollywood hungama – 3/5
    santabanta-3/5
    toi-3/5
    yahoo-1/5
    koimoi-2.5/5
    indiaglitz-2/5
    filmibeat-3/5

don’t forget 5 yrs ago akki’s housefull film got all negative reviews except bollywood hungama despite all that it became one of big hits of 2010… same thing with grand masti 2 yrs back all negative reviews then also it emerged super-hit and made more than 100 crores.. same thing is going to happen with brothers it will be super-hit.

  • It’s okayish type of a movie..First half is too slow..second half is good..Akshay is the only saving grace..Sid Malhotra need to learn acting..All other characters are decent.. 2.75/5 considering all other factors too

  • As i said early these are the reasons….
    1- No festival release..
    khans blocks every festivals..
Only two big holidays in first weekend… Khans always get five holidays in first weekend….

2- No big heroine or supporting actors…Jacqueline and sid are still newcomers….Sid ruined the film. Only bhagawan aksay was good…

3- No chartbuster song. Item song didn’t well, no masala,

4-It’s Genre keep away family audience…

5- Akshay didn’t promote film as SRK does…

6- Aksay do four films per year..If he do one film per year, collection will be 400 crore….

7- Indicine’s low opening prediction and negative review(Only 15.5 for king aksay and 2.5 rating. Atleast you should have given 4.5 star, lol)

8- Strict Critics didn’t like the film…(new suggestion, critics should be banned for reviewing aksay kumar movie)

9- It’s a remake, so many overseas audience skiped this film…Original was not so successful, so how will this?

10- Haters on Indicine spread negetivity….

11- Big competition from Drishyam, BB, Bahubali and south releases….Oh god why king aksay dont get solo release….

Last not least, We akki fans were busy in YouTube to watch it’s trailer…..You know, Brothers trailer has record views….

  • i expected more sensible movie from karan malhotra.akshoy kumar is just superb.the movie could be bettter if back ground music was not too loud, sid could express more and melodrama was little low. A good review from indicine(my rating is 3/5).but indicine has already done its finest review when it gave 4/5 to hny.bravo indicine, bravo!

  • So, according to this dumbass @thulla, I’m supposed to watch every shit movie before ‘badmouthing’ it. You might be a berozgaar and vella, but most of us are not.
By your logic, Humshakals and TMK should’ve earned 300 crore in India bcoz one should not believe in reviews and poor WOM, and watch the movie in theatre before passing our judgement on the quality of the movie. ??
    I salute your ‘intellect’.

  • Nothing in the movie to make u connected.u dun feel for ny character.Apne was lot better even Aryan was better then brothers

  • A bhaitard called Agneepath a bad film!!! LOL. . If Agneepath was a bad film, then tell me some names of Salman’s good films of the decade except Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Check the reviews of agneepath. it had got similar or even slightly better ratings than Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

  • @stark: indicine has given generous 2.5. Dont believe?
    Go & check other popular critcs’s rating which are 1.5 & 2

  • Buddhaji ki thullu:
During bong bong you had barked that critics are paid by Khans. Then you started praising critics at the time of baby & gobar. Now demanding ban of critics….Too much hypocrisy & chameleonism.

And think if critics are banned then what will happen to majeev rasand wannabie critic aNIPUNma!!!!

  • this is completely bias review i have watched the movie!!
i must say this is full negetive review.. first time i totally disagree with indicine.!!

  • according 2 me this movie is average but story was not so good as expected. Role of akshay in this movie was great but story was so bad due to which 1 st day this movie can earn about 15 crore

  • Ha ha ha… Then, I had better watch the kickass wrestlings by Brock Lesnar on Youtube instead watching this 90s film.
Now, it will just pass 100 crores somehow. Akki is smaller star than Varun!
@Babaji ki ghanta, but your bed-mate, Anipunma, will listen to the critics certainly. First convince him!
Now, bhojpuri brothers will just be an average or above average movie.
@Tiger, you are spot on this old spineless faggot pseudo intellectual thulla. He is just a insecure creature with tons of jealousy inside…
@Anipunma, Sanju saved Agneepath, not the jadoo toy… How can a jadoo toy shivering himself and begging the hrkp of jadoo in fear of Kancha save the film?

  • all the actors in this movie act well sp
ecially akki sir bur story can be more better so here problem was not with actors the main reason due to which public not liked this movie was story but also this movie was average

  • @aNIPUNMa, BB is millions times better than any movie done by your Marvel Comic parody jadoo boy’s entire career’s movies. Non of your shivering overactor jadoo boy’s movie can match king Salman khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The beauty of bajrangi bhaijaan is making Keedas like you burn in a stinky kichad. Shame on you.

  • @anand original, one request. Never argue with 3 kinds of people.
    1. Those who are born psycho. I.e. SSS, javed, Romu kaki, iamDhakkan, etc.
    2. Those who are born chameleons I.e. Babaji
    3. Those who are both mixture of born chameleon and psycho I.e. aNIPUNma ka dyper. :-D

  • hey akshay fans,
dont predict 200 crores Its only 105 crores(maximum) not more than that
    And minimum 90 crores

  • bhenan film of all time .. it is completely dud boring bhenans and nonsensical… when original is there why copy??? now they feel feel the wrath of megha as it will fail big time
