Well, many have been arguing endlessly over the box office figures of Kambakht Ishq and Shahrukh Khan’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.. To clear it up, we have the official numbers of both films.
Kambakht Ishq has just released, hence we only have the opening weekend numbers. The film has done exceptional business over the weekend with a net gross of almost 25 crores including the paid preview shows on Thursday.
The figures of SRK’s Rab Ne.. too were almost the same. It remains to be seen which film will end up the bigger earner at the Indian box-office.
Note:- Aamir Khan’s Ghajini isn’t even in the picture here, it was miles ahead of both films with a nett gross of more than 30 crores over the weekend.
Here you go, the official opening weekend and week-by-week figures of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
Opening weekend – 25 crores
Week 1 – 42.20 Crores
Week 2 – 24.60 Crores
Week 3 – 9.30 Crores
Week 4 – 4.90 Crores

There is lack of clarity with the first week numbers of Kambakht Ishq. Different sources have different figures and our very own calculations too differed from the official numbers (mentioned below)
Week 1 worldwide – 100 crores
Week 1 India (gross) – 70 crores
Week 1 India (nett gross) – 42 crores
So going by the official figures, Kambakht Ishq and Rab Ne are on par. Can the Akshay Kumar film do business of 25 crores or more in Week 2? Lets wait and watch.
Week 2 update: Unfortunately, KI has recorded extremely poor collections in week 2, to take its two week total to 52 crores in India.

Vick, if your waiting for a film like KI, Singh Is King from Aamir or Hrithik.. Sorry, it aint gonna happen. SRK had a similar kind of film, Om Shanti Om.. And if you didn’t like Chak De or Jodha Akbar.. Your unfortunately in the minority.. The whole of India loved it and both did very well overseas too..
And Oscars? Hell with the Oscars.. Slumdog Millionaire was nothing more than a Bollywood masala film and it swept the Oscars.. Why? It was made by a British director in English.. The same movie or maybe a better one.. By an Indian director, in Hindi wouldn’t even get a nomination in Foreign Category.. So again.. Hell with the Oscars.. Not saying they aren’t credible, yes they very much are. But its for Hollywood, Indian movies don’t even qualify for the main Oscar categories.. Why then, talk about it?
And regarding box-office.. here are the official figures by EROS International..
Total Gross worldwide – Rs 100 Million – the point to be noted here is, it includes the 10 crores from music and digital platforming, which cannnot be included in the ‘actual’ collections of the film. Just like we dont include the sallitte rights, DVD sales etc. So effectively, Kambakht Ishq grossed 90 crores worldwide, just from ticket sales.
In India, Total Gross is Rs 70 million and Nett Gross is 42 crores.. These are the official Eros numbers.
Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi on the other hand grossed 90 crores in Week 1 worldwide, purely from ticket sales. Of which, 42 crores was the nett gross from India.
So far, both movies have earned the same amount of money.
But what goes in Rab Ne’s favour is, the budget! The budget of the SRK film was Rs 25 crores (max), while Kamkabkht Ishq was made at a budget of 60 crores.. See the difference there? Its like a small budget film, making 100 crores at the box-office.
Hence, KI can never be a bigger hit than Rab Be.. We’ll just have to wait and see if second week onwards their week vs week collections match.
And regarding your last comment.. Indian reviewers aren’t fake. The critic reviews for KI was mixed, some trashed it and there were quite a few positive reviews too..
Its the same with audience, aint it? If you go over to the Kambakht Ishq review page, you’ll find the poll below the review.. If you add up 0, 1 and 2 stars.. Almost 55% have hated the film.. The others have liked it.. If you go through the comments, again the reviews are mixed..
Because reviews are usually an individual’s opinion on a film.. (To each his own.. You might like it, I might not..) Hence the voting option.. the audience poll.. to help readers decide…

I completely agree with Indicine Team. Kudos to you. I will post one comment which i wrote to Kambakkht Ishq director Sabir Khan as there was a comparison here with The Hangover
In terms of you comparing KI to Hangover — There is none. We as audiences dont mind seeing a movie that is a little provocative — I think we have an audience that is more mature then it ever was before — thats not an issue, But the fact that this movie had a very weak if any humor in it is what counteracts the msg you , the produces, akshay, and kareena had been trying to get across through the press meets : ” That is a popcorn type movie which will make you laugh forget your problems for that 3 hrs etc etc”….I’m tired of directors and actors using that as an excuse for such lame movies….esp if they are well known actors!
Akshay has done this thrice or four times in a row! “CC2C, Singh is King, Tasveer, Tashan etc” …I dont understand how these well known actors are taking advantage of their blindly following fan base and questioning their intellegence level!
Hangover had a plot …even in its comedy. Did KI? …KI to me seemed more about the outfits kareena was wearing, or her cheek implants, and the “hollywood” actors that were part-taking.
What makes me ever more mad is the hype that was created before the movie was even released!…. and then a success party to show the audiences (Again the undermining their intellengence on..) how good the movie must be to be selling this much!
To be honest with you sir, with all due, respect, if it wasnt for the 2 month strike this movie would have been another Tashan.
I want to commend you on being a first time director and grossing as much as you spent on this film but PLEASE do not undermine your audience!….We have not been paid by the “critics” who seem to apparently been plotting against seeing you and the ppl you have been involved with in this movie fail …But actually telling you what the normal jaanta feels. Taran Adarsh gave it a 4 and quiet frankly I wasnt surprised. Just cuz a movie has big names in it — it gets a star! Quiet Sad!…. It had no comedy! I dont mind a slapstick comedy but it should atleast make u laugh!….lol
I applaud the critics that dont want to join the bandwagon of praising a film only to suck up to those involved with it (Eg: Page 3 the movie) and are farely trying to rate a work of art. I’m not saying its true all the time but it has been true here in most cases.
One of them said “I dont mind that 60 Cr was spent on making this film at da time of recession instead of probably feeding half the poverty of india but atleast they could have spent that money on making us satisfied with whatevr it was we went to see”
All I saw was screaming, inappropriate scenes (And this is comin from somebody whose been living in the States for 15 yrs now so im pretty modern in my views and have seen it al but it was all still uncalled for! ….to compare hangover and KI on the same scale is a joke. Atleast the half made us laugh! …I left KI during the interval. Probably the only movie ive done so in.
Ricky, Nett Figures are Gross – Taxes.. As simple as that.. About 30 – 35% goes to the government as Entertainment tax. Nett Gross has absolutely nothing to do with Production or marketing costs.
To be a certified universal hit, every distributor has to recover his / her investment..
42 is producers number I believe but for Rab ne you have used BoxofficeIndia numbers.
Why not use the same numbers. BOI has KI ta 36 crores and even looking at Indiafm numbers will give no more than 35, except that in his circuit wise breakups Taran adarsh has mixed up Gross with nett to justify 42 crores.

Sara, we have our own sources.. and receive spreadsheets with collections from most theatres in India.. Sometimes its from the distributors – producers, other times from various other sources.. But its just so very hard to get figures from every theatre the movie is screened in, hence we only track big films..
Numbers that you see are never 100% accurate.. Its just an approximate.. Could be higher, could be much lesser..
The only figures that are 100% accurate are those from UK..
By the way, 42.2 crores for Rab Ne were the official numbers from Yashraj..
well yu tok bout those polls below reviews, well im amazed that yu cudnt figure out small reason behind that, the reason is review itself. what is the surety that ppl who participated in the polls had actually watched the movie. most of them would be SRK fans or other actor’s fans who might not or might have watched the movie but under influence of BAD REVIEW they turned against the movie. its natural.
coming to outcome of RDADFADA and KI, budget doesnt matter. ppl dont see the budget before goin 2 the cinema. same number of ppl would have watched KI if its budget was less than wot it is now. so i dont see your point there. RADFAFADF may be low budget film cuz it was made in india, KI is made in hollywood.

The easy way to differentiate between quality films and films that lack quality is very simple.. How it sustains in Week 2.. Jodha akbar, Chak De India and even Akshay’s Namaste London opened to average numbers (the opening week) and from strong word of mouth recorded strong collections in week 2, 3 and 4..
Anyways like we’ve said so many times, to each his own… There are quite a few who have loved RGV’s AAG too..

dear it doesnt balance out, if you go and read those replies, some of them AkKI fans and they havnt seen the movie and kind of disheartened after reading the reviews and leaving negative repliez. its like a chain reaction.
but gud thing is, as i said before, now audience knows wots this media is cookin up. media was successful damanging CC2C (which apparently got 45% tomatoes at rottentomatoes.com, and i’d prefer that website on any crappy indian website for reviews on any given day)

Maybe paying to rate his movies high, makes sense but you can go through reviews of the last 2 SRK films.. How does SRK gain if Akshay’s movies are rated low ? ? ? ?

Race – 5.8 crore
Kambakht Ishq – 6.2 crore
Singh is King was 7.1 crores..
Here are Delhi numbers..
Ghajini – 5.8 cr
RNBDJ – 4.4 cr
Race – 4.00 cr
Kambakht Ishq – 3.4 cr
Singh Is King was 4.8 crores..
As you see from the numbers above.. Akshay hasn’t managed to even break his Singh Is King record with KI.. Do some research before you speak..

Just a comparison between two hyped films of 2 superstars. Both are good, depending on the content, some movies do well and some dont.. Stars cant be held responsible for poor films, if opening isn’t upto the mark, then probably you can question his star power.. KI opening was upto the mark, it didnt break records but did decent business..
Indicine Team – It really doesnt matter which films went hit or not!! I admit Ghajini was awesome but it doesnt mean that Aamir is the best, just because rab ne…went a hit but not more then ghajni! SRK also works good some people might have not liked Ghajini! The qualitiy of actor depends for example: the way they act is one really important thing! I also have to admit that SRK is not the best maybe for you guys but he will always be the best for me!!

So is it possible for you to give the first four weeks collectionx for KI for India, USA, UK and Dubai and also let us know the budget of the film. Let us(Akki Bhai fans) also know whether it is a hit, superhit, above average, average or flop film according to BO collections and budget and also the reason why so??
