Box Office Collections 2013 Predictions (Part 2)

Predicting the Box Office is a very tricky Game. Not many understand the trade and Box Office patterns. And with the rapid increase in multiplex screens across the country, predicting the opening and lifetime business of films have become even more difficult. I will do just that. I won’t be right all the time. It won’t come off all the time but ah, the temptation to play the tricky game is too big to resist.

I will predict the lifetime India business of 20 films slated to release in 2013 (in 2 parts). The 20 films were chosen by me randomly. No scientific research was conducted, to be clear. I did make sure that all the big budget films of 2012 will have their Box Office business predicted. Not much is known about most of the films. The first look isn’t out for most of the films. I have predicted the business looking at the buzz for the films, the past record of the actors and directors, and for some films, I just went with my gut. So here we go.

Box Office India Predictions 2012 – Part 2

Shootout At WadalaShootout At Wadala (Release: 1st May)

The second part of Ekta’s ‘Shootout’ series will benefit from a release on a national Holiday like May Day. This film is based on one of 2012’s bestselling books – “Dongri to Dubai”. Sanjay Gupta talks charge of the film starring John Abraham and Anil Kapoor. The last film has built a decent following for itself and I see this film reaping the benefits. Also, Priyanka Chopra will appear in an item-cum mujra song in this film. John has his hopes pinned on this film and I don’t think he will be disappointed.

Prediction: 80 crore

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (Release: 12th July)

The first teaser trailer of the film was released almost 8 months before the release. The producers want to build up as much anticipation for this ‘biographical documentation’ of Milkha Singh’s life as they possibly can. Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra will be directing his first film after 4 years since the disappointing Delhi 6. Personally speaking, this film is up there in my ‘must see films of 2013’ list. I think Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will surprise a lot of people in 2013.

Prediction: 70 crore

Salman KhanSalman Khan’s next (Release: 8th January)

People only know 2 things about Salman Khan’s only 2013 release: 1. It’s Eid release date and 2. It is NOT Sher Khan. Salman Khan has had the highest grossing film of the year 3 times in a row now. And, I believe 2013 will finally end that run. The jam-packed release schedule is the primary reason for that. It will almost certainly clash with Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2, if Sohail Khan chooses to go ahead with the release date. Salman’s last 3 releases have all been holiday releases and his films have lapped that advantage up. Also, just a week after the ‘Clash of 2013’ a high profile film like Satyagraha is scheduled to release. OUATIM2 and Satyagraha will take up a lot of the screens in multiplexes and needless to say will hinder the box office business of this film and will stop it from breaking records.

Prediction: 155 crore

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2

Just like Salman’s next will be hindered by the clash, the same will happen with Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2. Still regardless of the highly anticipated clash, OUATIM2 has more going for it than against it. Milan Luthria is directing the sequel of the ‘Hit’ Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and his ‘The Dirty Picture’ was a Blockbuster because of it’s oomph and the right balance of ‘masala’ and ‘realism’. It worked wonders. And I don’t think this film will NOT work. It will be the underdog but going by the buzz around it, it will do well for itself.

Prediction: 125 crore

SatyagrahaSatyagraha (Release: 15th August)

Satyagraha marks the coming together of Prakash Jha with Ajay Devgn after Raajneeti. It releases on one of the most important days – Independence Day. It enjoys the benefit of being a film with a stellar star cast, and is based on the lives of Anna Hazare, and Arvind Kejriwal. This is one of the most talked about ‘affairs’ of recent times and the anticipation around the film is already pretty high. However, it won’t get too many screens and multiplex shows because of the ‘Clash’ just a week prior to it’s release. I feel Satyagraha will do decently and get Prakash Jha a much needed hit.

Prediction: 90 crore

BesharamBesharam (Release: 2nd October)

Abhinav Kashyap returns to direction after delivering an all time Blockbuster like Dabangg. Abhinav’s contribution to Dabangg can’t be negated and Besharam should again be a ‘smart masala’ film. Ranbir Kapoor will appear in a ‘commercial’ film after his 2009 Super Hit Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kaahani. With a favourable release date (Gandhi Jayanti) and a unique storyline, I will be surprised if Besharam doesn’t work at the Box Office.

Prediction: 115 crore

Rambo RajkumarRambo Rajkumar (Release: 11th October)

This Prabhu Deva directed Shahid-Sonakshi film was earlier title ‘Namak’ but it was later, amusingly changed to ‘Rambo Rajkumar’. Although it looks gibberish to me right now, I am sure we’d know what it means closer to the release. This is the major Dusshera release of the year and going by Prabhu Deva’s track record this again should be an uber fun masala entertainer. Phata Poster Nikla Hero will redeem Shahid’s career but ‘Rambo Rajkumar’ will give him the much needed box office hit.

Prediction: 65 crore

Krrish 3Krrish 3 (Release: Diwali 2013)

Although no body has seen any snap from the third film in the Krrish franchise, expectations and anticipation are at an all time high from this Diwali 2013 release. The fact that it will take a gigantic opening is a foregone conclusion. What remains to be seen is, will it be able to break the ultimate record of 202cr? I think it will fall short. I have no logical reason to back up my claim but I have a gut feeling (Hey, sometimes gambling and predicting is all about what your gut tells you) that Krrish won’t become the all time highest grossing film of Indian cinema. Regardless of what I think, I will be more than happy to be proven wrong!

Prediction: 185 crore

GundayGunday (6th December)

Now this film has me all excited thanks to the exciting casting and story. Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh play two hardened streetsmart guys who climb up the social ladder in the 1970s and 1980s using their influence in the coal industry. Priyanka Chopra plays the female lead. The film will have Ali Abbas Zaffar as the director and will be completely shot in Kolkata. Yash Raj have had a mandatory release in the first/second friday of December since Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in 2008. Most of those films worked, and I think Gunday won’t be an exception.

Prediction: 75cr

Happy New Year Happy New Year (Release: Not Confirmed)

The Hit actor-director pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan is back again after the 2007 Blockbuster Om Shanti Om. Farah’s last release (Tees Maar Khan) did not fare to well and she has her all riding on this heist/dance film. In more ways than one, HNY’s fate is dependent on how well or bad Chennai Express does. If CE does well, HNY will most likely carry forward the momentum and if CE doesn’t do too well, the HNY juggernaut will most likely not have as many takers as they need, for the film to become a Blockbuster. I am not pumped up for this movie, and my prediction about this film is going to be conservative (compared to what others are predicting).

Prediction: 135cr
