Box Office Collections 2013 Predictions (Part 2)

Predicting the Box Office is a very tricky Game. Not many understand the trade and Box Office patterns. And with the rapid increase in multiplex screens across the country, predicting the opening and lifetime business of films have become even more difficult. I will do just that. I won’t be right all the time. It won’t come off all the time but ah, the temptation to play the tricky game is too big to resist.

I will predict the lifetime India business of 20 films slated to release in 2013 (in 2 parts). The 20 films were chosen by me randomly. No scientific research was conducted, to be clear. I did make sure that all the big budget films of 2012 will have their Box Office business predicted. Not much is known about most of the films. The first look isn’t out for most of the films. I have predicted the business looking at the buzz for the films, the past record of the actors and directors, and for some films, I just went with my gut. So here we go.

Box Office India Predictions 2012 – Part 2

Shootout At WadalaShootout At Wadala (Release: 1st May)

The second part of Ekta’s ‘Shootout’ series will benefit from a release on a national Holiday like May Day. This film is based on one of 2012’s bestselling books – “Dongri to Dubai”. Sanjay Gupta talks charge of the film starring John Abraham and Anil Kapoor. The last film has built a decent following for itself and I see this film reaping the benefits. Also, Priyanka Chopra will appear in an item-cum mujra song in this film. John has his hopes pinned on this film and I don’t think he will be disappointed.

Prediction: 80 crore

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (Release: 12th July)

The first teaser trailer of the film was released almost 8 months before the release. The producers want to build up as much anticipation for this ‘biographical documentation’ of Milkha Singh’s life as they possibly can. Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra will be directing his first film after 4 years since the disappointing Delhi 6. Personally speaking, this film is up there in my ‘must see films of 2013’ list. I think Bhaag Milkha Bhaag will surprise a lot of people in 2013.

Prediction: 70 crore

Salman KhanSalman Khan’s next (Release: 8th January)

People only know 2 things about Salman Khan’s only 2013 release: 1. It’s Eid release date and 2. It is NOT Sher Khan. Salman Khan has had the highest grossing film of the year 3 times in a row now. And, I believe 2013 will finally end that run. The jam-packed release schedule is the primary reason for that. It will almost certainly clash with Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2, if Sohail Khan chooses to go ahead with the release date. Salman’s last 3 releases have all been holiday releases and his films have lapped that advantage up. Also, just a week after the ‘Clash of 2013’ a high profile film like Satyagraha is scheduled to release. OUATIM2 and Satyagraha will take up a lot of the screens in multiplexes and needless to say will hinder the box office business of this film and will stop it from breaking records.

Prediction: 155 crore

Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai 2

Just like Salman’s next will be hindered by the clash, the same will happen with Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai 2. Still regardless of the highly anticipated clash, OUATIM2 has more going for it than against it. Milan Luthria is directing the sequel of the ‘Hit’ Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and his ‘The Dirty Picture’ was a Blockbuster because of it’s oomph and the right balance of ‘masala’ and ‘realism’. It worked wonders. And I don’t think this film will NOT work. It will be the underdog but going by the buzz around it, it will do well for itself.

Prediction: 125 crore

SatyagrahaSatyagraha (Release: 15th August)

Satyagraha marks the coming together of Prakash Jha with Ajay Devgn after Raajneeti. It releases on one of the most important days – Independence Day. It enjoys the benefit of being a film with a stellar star cast, and is based on the lives of Anna Hazare, and Arvind Kejriwal. This is one of the most talked about ‘affairs’ of recent times and the anticipation around the film is already pretty high. However, it won’t get too many screens and multiplex shows because of the ‘Clash’ just a week prior to it’s release. I feel Satyagraha will do decently and get Prakash Jha a much needed hit.

Prediction: 90 crore

BesharamBesharam (Release: 2nd October)

Abhinav Kashyap returns to direction after delivering an all time Blockbuster like Dabangg. Abhinav’s contribution to Dabangg can’t be negated and Besharam should again be a ‘smart masala’ film. Ranbir Kapoor will appear in a ‘commercial’ film after his 2009 Super Hit Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kaahani. With a favourable release date (Gandhi Jayanti) and a unique storyline, I will be surprised if Besharam doesn’t work at the Box Office.

Prediction: 115 crore

Rambo RajkumarRambo Rajkumar (Release: 11th October)

This Prabhu Deva directed Shahid-Sonakshi film was earlier title ‘Namak’ but it was later, amusingly changed to ‘Rambo Rajkumar’. Although it looks gibberish to me right now, I am sure we’d know what it means closer to the release. This is the major Dusshera release of the year and going by Prabhu Deva’s track record this again should be an uber fun masala entertainer. Phata Poster Nikla Hero will redeem Shahid’s career but ‘Rambo Rajkumar’ will give him the much needed box office hit.

Prediction: 65 crore

Krrish 3Krrish 3 (Release: Diwali 2013)

Although no body has seen any snap from the third film in the Krrish franchise, expectations and anticipation are at an all time high from this Diwali 2013 release. The fact that it will take a gigantic opening is a foregone conclusion. What remains to be seen is, will it be able to break the ultimate record of 202cr? I think it will fall short. I have no logical reason to back up my claim but I have a gut feeling (Hey, sometimes gambling and predicting is all about what your gut tells you) that Krrish won’t become the all time highest grossing film of Indian cinema. Regardless of what I think, I will be more than happy to be proven wrong!

Prediction: 185 crore

GundayGunday (6th December)

Now this film has me all excited thanks to the exciting casting and story. Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh play two hardened streetsmart guys who climb up the social ladder in the 1970s and 1980s using their influence in the coal industry. Priyanka Chopra plays the female lead. The film will have Ali Abbas Zaffar as the director and will be completely shot in Kolkata. Yash Raj have had a mandatory release in the first/second friday of December since Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi in 2008. Most of those films worked, and I think Gunday won’t be an exception.

Prediction: 75cr

Happy New Year Happy New Year (Release: Not Confirmed)

The Hit actor-director pair of Shah Rukh Khan and Farah Khan is back again after the 2007 Blockbuster Om Shanti Om. Farah’s last release (Tees Maar Khan) did not fare to well and she has her all riding on this heist/dance film. In more ways than one, HNY’s fate is dependent on how well or bad Chennai Express does. If CE does well, HNY will most likely carry forward the momentum and if CE doesn’t do too well, the HNY juggernaut will most likely not have as many takers as they need, for the film to become a Blockbuster. I am not pumped up for this movie, and my prediction about this film is going to be conservative (compared to what others are predicting).

Prediction: 135cr

Predictions from Part 1

  • Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola – 45 crore
  • Race 2 – 105 crore
  • Special Chabbis – 80 crore
  • Himmatwala – 110 crore
  • Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani – 105 crore
  • Boss – 75 crore
  • Lootera – 60 crore
  • Phata Poster Nikla Hero – 50 crore
  • Chennai Express – 145 crore
  • Dhoom 3 – 195 crore

  • lot of roshan fans said the same thing last time that kites will break all records plus 3idiots record. samething they said when agneepath broke bodyguard opening record, but look what hapen and velocity nobody underestimate roshan they overestimate roshan. trust me no matter how big the franchise is only a good can help it because roshan doesnt have star power of making it cross 150 crore mark. srk fans still talking about ce even after a serires of dissappointments. ce wont even cross hundred crores mark my word. i am salman fan but i can say that next year he will only face tough comeptetion with two films that is dhoom 3 and krissh 3. radhe i dont about that but kick will definitly give a good competetion to krissh and dhoom

  • Salman khan is not a joke. He Will rocks again n no doubt about that. Nmbr 1 position is only for bollywood hunk Salman khan. No one can beat him.

  • all these actors are working with big banners this time..except salman…akshay is working with established directors even sharukh even aamir and even hritik..only salman is working with flop director sohail..stil he is in competetion…that is STAR POWER

  • Beating 3 idiots record will be very very very difficult. Not to forget Ek tha tiger and dabbang 2 r festival releases with more than 2 national holidays and had 5 open week with no major film releasing. That’s why both movies collected 150 crore plus. I dont think any of 2013 release like doom 2, krish 3, chennai express will get this oppurtunity. Unless movie contain extraordinary content.

  • An enjoyable read… looking forward to practically all those movies… BUT… where the hell are Emraan Hashmi’s “Ek Thi Dayaan” and “Ghanchakar”? Those are far more exciting films with highly exhilarating subjects compared to most of the films covered in this article!

  • My predictions –
    Dhoom 3 (180-200 cr 100%)
    Salman khan next (160-180 cr)
    Ce (150-170 cr)
    Kriss 3 (140-150 cr)
    Himmatwala (105-115 cr)
    Boss (100 cr)
    OUTIM2 (110-130 cr)
    Race2 (100 cr)

  • @kabir. Y srk became nightmare for u. U drags him in ur every comments. Even Amir Akki hritik fans says against Sallu but u only targeting srk ;-))
    My prediction Min to max
    Dhoom3. 120 – 220
    Krishh3 130- 200
    outim2. 75-125
    Boss. 80-120
    Himmatwala.110-140
    Race2. 90-115
    Radhe. 110-145
    Satyagraha 60-110

  • indicine KRISSH-3 WILL NOT CROSS 130-CRORE MARK MY WORD IT IS CHILDREN MOVIE HOW COME YOU ASPECT SUCH BIG NUMBERS?

  • Dabangg 2 remained the top Hindi film in its third week with business around the 1.5-1.6 crore nett mark. The drop from last Friday is around 62% which is solid trending. The weekend should go to around 8 crore nett.

The stand out performance has come in Bihar where it is likely to cross the figures of Bodyguard and become the highest grossing film ever. This is followed by Delhi/UP where it may come out with a 20 crore distributor share which has only been achieved by Ek Tha Tiger which did 23 crore plus.

The business in Mumbai circuit may hit 30 crore in terms of share which has only been achieved by Three Idiots and Ek Tha Tiger.

FOR THOSE WHO SAID DABANNG 2 UNDER PERFORMED.

  • Salman again proves he is the baap of boxofficee all the negetivety couldn’t damage the collection of d2 cold weather (record low temperature)and the mother and father of all matchess pak-india. every holiday d2 faced competition from pak-indo match look at today sunday a holiday again today have match before x-max and sunday there were match but d2 manage to collect respective figure you all should except this

  • Prediction is a think-tank of one’s but time will write the true “History”

    1. Radhey
    2. Dhoom 3
    3. Krishhh 3

  • “dhoom 3″ will be the biggest grosser of not only 2013 but also all time biggest grosser.even a small logo has generated so much buzz.”dhoom 3” logo has got more than half million views on you tube which is huge number for just a logo.it is the most awaited movie of 2013.

  • Boss wher is that written 70cr was only from single screen not multiplex huh . . See even i too like more aki but ur comments make us to hate him very badly best ex rr and 786 collection diff.. So again m sayin its good to u not to behave like Srk fans. .

  • Anil breaker . . Haha below 145cr for salman movies this is ridiculous. . And aamir and hr fans wil say they wil be no. 1 in dis yr Bcoz of good franchie and hype and too belive these may have chance to be no. 1 but i dnt understand y u people sayin Srk wil be no. 1 or in top 3 for Wht weather he has any past year records or any craze or festival release aamir or hr huh Haha idiots

  • It will be either Dhoom 3 or Krrish 3 no chance for other movie but Salman’s kick has solid chance to give a fight to these two movie if thats coming this year & I don’t think Ranbir’s both movie can do 100 cr this year,It will be between 80-90 cr in best case.C.E can do 135 as predicted but only with superb wom which is highly unlikely for a rohit shetty movie. But yeah agreed with ouatim but it may do 10 cr more with very good word of mouth.

  • Some 1 very wel said but i want same obstacle to d3 wch Dabangg 2 faced then we can see Wht is capacity of aamir with good franchise hype craze plus if it has good script . .

  • Hahahahaha rofl about ur prediction mark my word

99% of ur prediction is totaly wrong
dhoom 3 300 cr if content is like
    3 idiots otherwise 250
    krissh 3 same 300 cr or 250
    salmans next if solo release
than will be in top 3 higest grosser of 2013
    ouatim 2 will reach 175
    chennai express 175
    and many movies will cross
    150 cr
next year 16 films will collect
    more than 100 cr

  • @Aakash i think , you are quite wrong in busy schedule of big releases 250-300cr looks impossible for any movie in year 2013 and chennai express will be struggles to cross even 130cr , 175cr only in dreams.

  • @some1 arei duffer idiot why should indicine ban me? Instead i want greek dog to be banned forever from bollywood and u forever from indicine.

  • @hrithik haterz, i vl personally attend ur funeral on DIWALI 2013, 1st nov on d eve of KRRISH 3 release !! i vl burst crackers n njoy ur death !
