Best Actress in a Leading Role 2014: Popular Choice

We pick 5 of the best performances by a leading lady in a commercial film – these actresses could be the top contenders to walk away with the ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ award for 2014.

Queen

1. Kangana Ranaut (Queen): For many of us, 2014 was the year of Queen and Kangana’s performance was easily the best in a commercial film. Playing the role of a under-confident Delhi girl Rani Mehra, who then discovers herself on a trip to Europe after her boyfriend deserts days before her marriage, Kangana delivered the performance of her life. Her dialogue delivery (some of which she wrote herself) was spot on and so was her performance. We all connected with Rani and we rooted for her as she made the bold choice of rejecting Vijay when he eventually comes back.

Mary Kom

2. Priyanka Chopra (Mary Kom): Portraying the role of a champion boxer like Mary Kom, who is famous and is well-respected, must not have been an easy task for Priyanka Chopra. She did a sublime job playing the pugilist from Manipur. Mary Kom’s story needed to be told and Priyanka played a great part in sharing that story. The film and her acting earned Priyanka a lot of plaudits and Mary Kom became a success.

Happy New Year

3. Deepika Padukone (Happy New Year): Happy New Year was such a happy film because of Nandu Bhide (Abhishek) and his childhood friend Mohini (Deepika). Her accented speech, her dancing and her comic timing were flawless. She sizzled in the song ‘Lovely’ and was loveable in ‘Manwa Laage’. A lesser actor would have made the role a lot more caricaturish. It is to Deepika’s credit that she can do films as varied as Happy New Year and Finding Fanny in the same calendar year.

Anushka Sharma

4. Anushka Sharma (PK): PK wouldn’t be the film it is if not for Anushka’s super-charming Jagat Janani. Anushka came of age in the film becoming the human voice of her alien friend PK (Aamir). She embibed intelligence, and playfulness in her portrayal of Jaggu and even showed tremendous dramatic chops in the climax scenes. We can’t wait to see more of Anushka in 2015 in films like Bombay Velvet, NH10 and Dil Dhadakne Do.

Hasee Toh Phasee

5. Parineeti Chopra (Hasee Toh Phasee) – Parineeti started the year on a good footing with Hasee Toh Phasee, playing the likeable genius Meeta who is not afraid to do things her own way, even if that means going against her whole family. Parineeti’s performance gave Meeta a very pleasant outlook and we felt for her character in the climax. It was a difficult role to play and only someone as talented as Parineeti could pull it off the way she did.

Pick your best performance amongst performances that we have mentioned above!

  • I can’t agree with your top 5 list. Anushka and Deepika ahead of Aalia and Rani? Both the characters Jagat Janani and Mohini were caricatures, whereas Aalia and Rani not only played themselves very well, their parts were written beautifully.

  • strange u didn’t nominate aalia for 2 states.anyways I was going to always vote for kangana.she was extraordinary in queen

  • eagerly waiting for best actor in a leading role(popular) nominations

I m expecting couple of stars from our group to b nominated along with hrithik for bang bang, aamir for pk and salman for kick

  • I think aalia should hv been nominated for 2 states ahead of deepiks.deepika surely acted well in hny and ff but aalia was better

  • Voted for Kangana! However, I think ALIA SHOULD HAVE BEEN SURELY NOMINATED FOR HER FAB PERFORMANCE IN ‘HIGHWAY’!

  • Cant vote for Kangna as not seen Queen- seen Highway and 2 States on tv and surprise you havent put Alia in that list- why is Deepika there n so high but its your call. Though I feel its strange to see Pari in at 5- man shes overrated IMO- htp was Sids film as I couldnt stand Paris ott acting- Alia deserved to be in the list as I would have voted for her but with whats on offer I pick Anushka for PK…. When I see Queen then I can switch votes but as of now its Anushka…!

  • I disagree. Where’s Alia in Highway and Rani in Mardaani? Okay, they were conventional roles. But here we’re saying about “Best actress popular”. Mardaani and Highway are popular films and their actresses have delivered great performances which are appriciated by all.

Here is the nominations fop best actress(popular) award in no particular order:

    1. Kangana Ranaut- Queen

    2. Priyanka Chopra- MaryKom

    3. Alia Bhatt- Highway

    4. Rani Mukherjee- Mardaani

    5. Parineeti Chopra- Hasee Toh Phasee

    6. Madhuri Dixit- Dedh Ishqiya

    7. Deepika Padukone- Finding Fanny

    8. Anushka Sharma- PK

    9. Alia Bhatt- 2 states

    Should get- Kangana
    will get- priyanka/Kangana
    May get- Rani Mukherjee
    I personally want- Alia(highway) or Kangana(Queen).

  • I don’t find nothing interesting in kangana…. I like rani’s performance in mardani…. Super dashing inspector….

  • Deepika???? @Indicine, are you kidding me??? she was horrible her 15 minute role in Happy New Year.
very strange list….how can you forget Sonam kapoor and Alia???

  • @nipun but rani for mardaani and aalia for highway were nominated for best unconventional role hetoine that’s y they r npt considered in this list

  • My pick would be Pareeniti any given day, her performance was spectacular.
Haven’t watched Queen yet, nor do I wish to watch it ever in my life.

  • Kangana Ranout for sure..yes.. Priyanka was also good, but Kangana is the only actress to walk away with the award as the best actress of the year, also her film MUST win in one of the categories: best film, best story, best direction ( maybe best direction ).. I still don’t know who directed this film but he’s AMAZING director and deserves this award. PK maybe best film of the year.

  • It is horrible to she deepika in this list.
    For me inorder
    1. Kangana
    2. Parineeti
    3. Priyanka
    4. Rani
    5. Alia

  • indicine seems obsessed with happy new year.. in this article indicine calls it a happy film n in other article it calls it a diwali blockbuster although it was just a superhit.. way to go indicine! applause..
