Only two films have crossed the 300 crore mark so far: Aamir Khan – Anushka – Rajkumar Hirani’s PK and Salman Khan – Kabir Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Salman, under Ali Abbas Zafar’s direction and Anushka as his lead heroine, will have yet another go at the 300 crore club, as his latest release ‘Sultan’ has already collected ? 181 crore in 5 days at the box office.
Release factors in favour and against all three films:
- PK (December 2014) : 3900 screens, highest average ticket price, 3 open weeks, no competition
- Bajrangi Bhaijaan (July 2015) : 4000 screens, lowest average ticket price (compared to other two), 2 open weeks, competition from Baahubali
- Sultan (July 2016) : 4350 screens, 2nd highest average ticket price, 1 open week, competition from Great Grand Masti from Week 2.
July 11 Update: At the end of 5 days, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had collected 151.05 crore, PK had collected ? 135.79 crore and Sultan has accumulated ? 180.36 crore. So, Salman Khan’s latest release is ? 29.31 crore ahead of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and a whopping ? 44.57 crore ahead of PK. Interestingly, the highest single day of Sultan was lower than the highest single day of both Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK!
On Day 6, PK collected ? 19.55 crore, while Bajrangi Bhaijaan notched up ? 18.05 crore. Both were working weekdays. But since Sultan had a extended 5-day weekend, during which business was at a very high level throughout, it’ll be interesting to see where Monday finishes for Sultan.
We’ll be analysing the trend over the next few days. Even if Sultan collects about half of what PK collected after its first 5 days, the film will cross the 300 crore mark. If it matches pace and collects as much as PK did, then it’ll get close to the unbelievable 400 crore mark! If it collects as well as Bajrangi Bhaijaan, it’ll be the highest grosser of all time and cross the 350 crore mark!
July 12 Update: Sultan has collected Rs 15.54 crore on its 6th day at the box office, which is the same as what Bajrangi Bhaijaan collected on its 7th day. The reduction in multiplex ticket prices, along with a majority of audience watching the film in the first extended weekend itself – meant that the film had a ‘bigger-than-expected’ drop on Monday. At the end of the 6th day, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had collected 169.1 crore, while PK had collected 163.34 crore. Sultan is ahead of BB by 26.8 crore and PK by 32.56 crore. The gap with PK has reduced quite considerably and should decrease further tomorrow, because the Christmas holiday was on the 7th day of its run.
From the first Monday collections of Sultan – one thing is clear, the 400 crore mark is now beyond the reach of the film and even becoming the highest grosser of all time could prove to be difficult. However, it does have a good chance of crossing the 300 crore mark and even challenging the lifetime business of Bajrangi Bhaijaan (possibly even PK, if picks up in the 2nd weekend). The release of Great Grand Masti won’t have a big impact on Sultan, but on a lower level, it will definitely make a small dent on business – because a section of the audience will have a choice to make and the repeat audience at smaller centres could also reduce.

Both BB n Sultan were unlucky with their release timings- PK was well planned out though by Team Hirani/ Aamir as they wanted that extra kickstart to collections after initial opening which a full blown holiday provides…!

Here another point which is to be noted that, PK Avg ticket price is more than BB and Sultan, also PK get 3 open week which have more holidays (Christmas and New Year) compare to EID festival and also no clash, means every thing was in favor of PK….so if Sultan collects more than PK then it will consider as Big successful movie compare to PK….
I am not giving collection in day wise but I think Sultan will cross 300cr mark in just 2 week…and 50-60cr in remaining run because there is no holiday like Christmas Period….Anyhow it will cross PK collection….

Right bro even I watched it on TV yesterday, that’s the 1st time when I watched FAN, and I am really disappointed, because I heard a lot from these Srk fans that it is a brilliant movie, brilliant acting Blah Blah…but what a pathetic movie, such a boring, no story, no exciting dialogs, no impressive acting at all….Srk fans calling it brilliant acting but it is nothing but an overacting…..I know they think I say this because I am Salman fan but trust me this is my opinion as a General Audience, and you can see the result, at the end it is Flop….They also call it Nice movie, seriously they are stupid, how they can call it nice movie, there are 3-4 chase scenes, comedy, emotion, revenge in it, then how it is Nice movie, it’s a commercial movie, just because there are no song in it, you cannot say it Nice movie…..

I don’t know but I have noted from day1 that you have definitely some problem with PK. You always trying to degrade its achievement by talking 3 open weeks and hiked prices. Pk didn’t had holiday advantage in first 3 days for creating headlines like its broken this or that record instead of it surrounded by controversy. The film itself was so strong by content that eventually it helped the movie for set unprecedented record. Also pk content was not much familier to single screens also.
You haven’t mentioned that Sultan has 5 day extended weekend, do you think if its first 5 days would be like pk, its could collect close to pk&bb first week in 5 days.
Instead of appreciation of the way pk had set benchmarks you are setting up for advantages. Common no other actors movie touched 225cr when pk landed 337cr.
@Navin I also agree with you it will be hard for Dangal to become top grosser of the year now specially after the outstanding performance if Sultan. comparison will be inevitable and the wrestling factor also doesn’t novel for it too. Dangal will don’t have holiday advantage of Christmas and new year day as both fallen on Sunday.
But you can never predict Aamir on Christmas.

I am not salman fan but the collection of Sultan is extraordinary beyond the expectations . I don’t think any film beat the first week of sultan . It will definietly cross 300 crore .
@sandy i don’t have any problem if Sultan break record of lifetime. If a movie is excellent than it will definitely create lifetime record. Bajrangi bhaijaan was superb so it come very close. Salman is no doubt currently no.1 at box office so if he comes with content than one should not think about other aspect if he failed to break lifetime.
Because if srk can do with CE,Aamir with d3 and pk recently. Than Salman also should get the same.
My only issue was silly reasons given around pk success. pk didn’t beaten previous best marginally, it collected almost 60cr more than D3 that time. So credit should be given where it is due.
