Bajrangi Bhaijaan vs Sultan vs PK: Box Office Collections

Only two films have crossed the 300 crore mark so far: Aamir Khan – Anushka – Rajkumar Hirani’s PK and Salman Khan – Kabir Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Salman, under Ali Abbas Zafar’s direction and Anushka as his lead heroine, will have yet another go at the 300 crore club, as his latest release ‘Sultan’ has already collected ? 181 crore in 5 days at the box office.

Release factors in favour and against all three films:

  • PK (December 2014) : 3900 screens, highest average ticket price, 3 open weeks, no competition
  • Bajrangi Bhaijaan (July 2015) : 4000 screens, lowest average ticket price (compared to other two), 2 open weeks, competition from Baahubali
  • Sultan (July 2016) : 4350 screens, 2nd highest average ticket price, 1 open week, competition from Great Grand Masti from Week 2.

July 11 Update: At the end of 5 days, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had collected 151.05 crore, PK had collected ? 135.79 crore and Sultan has accumulated ? 180.36 crore. So, Salman Khan’s latest release is ? 29.31 crore ahead of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and a whopping ? 44.57 crore ahead of PK. Interestingly, the highest single day of Sultan was lower than the highest single day of both Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK!

On Day 6, PK collected ? 19.55 crore, while Bajrangi Bhaijaan notched up ? 18.05 crore. Both were working weekdays. But since Sultan had a extended 5-day weekend, during which business was at a very high level throughout, it’ll be interesting to see where Monday finishes for Sultan.

We’ll be analysing the trend over the next few days. Even if Sultan collects about half of what PK collected after its first 5 days, the film will cross the 300 crore mark. If it matches pace and collects as much as PK did, then it’ll get close to the unbelievable 400 crore mark! If it collects as well as Bajrangi Bhaijaan, it’ll be the highest grosser of all time and cross the 350 crore mark!

July 12 UpdateSultan has collected Rs 15.54 crore on its 6th day at the box office, which is the same as what Bajrangi Bhaijaan collected on its 7th day. The reduction in multiplex ticket prices, along with a majority of audience watching the film in the first extended weekend itself – meant that the film had a ‘bigger-than-expected’ drop on Monday. At the end of the 6th day, Bajrangi Bhaijaan had collected 169.1 crore, while PK had collected 163.34 crore. Sultan is ahead of BB by 26.8 crore and PK by 32.56 crore. The gap with PK has reduced quite considerably and should decrease further tomorrow, because the Christmas holiday was on the 7th day of its run.

From the first Monday collections of Sultan – one thing is clear, the 400 crore mark is now beyond the reach of the film and even becoming the highest grosser of all time could prove to be difficult. However, it does have a good chance of crossing the 300 crore mark and even challenging the lifetime business of Bajrangi Bhaijaan (possibly even PK, if picks up in the 2nd weekend). The release of Great Grand Masti won’t have a big impact on Sultan, but on a lower level, it will definitely make a small dent on business – because a section of the audience will have a choice to make and the repeat audience at smaller centres could also reduce.

  • Indicine’s LBO will Go right of 310 crore.
    CONgrats Sultaan Teams Salman Fans
Yes Salman is the King Of Box Office.

  • It is the biggest question of the decade. Even bigger than Kattapa ne Bahubali ko Kun Mara:

    (Data courtesy – @ Anand)

Opening Day of Sultan vs HNY,

    Occupancy,
    Sultan >>> HNY

    Ticket Price,
    Sultan >>> HNY

    Screen Counts,
    Sultan >>> HNY

Then why the opening day collections of Sultan was less than that of HNY?

Why was it less even on the 4th Day of Sultan, where the film performed better than the opening day itself?

I know you may say HNY performed than Sultan in the centres or circuits where the ticket prices were more expensive? And Sultan performed better in the circuits where the ticket prices were cheaper.

In that case, there are two things:
    1) you gotta consider HNY Ticket prices were more expensive
    OR

    2) You name the centres or the circuits where it performed better than Sultan dif. Or give us the circuit-wise comparisons.

We believe in those figures then. These are some meaningful questions. Else, anyone can round up a figure and say ‘my film has earned this much on the opening day.’

  • @indicine

You say that PK’s average ticket prices were the highest. Do you have a scientific method to back your claim? Is yes can your share it along with the entire data set?

Even if one agrees with the ‘highest ticket rate’ claim, don’t you think high ticket rates can put off some people from watching the movie in theatres, indirectly leading to loss of potential revenue?

    PK had three open weeks.

Agreed. But one of those weeks was after the new year which is considered dull for business. So how can that be an advantage?

You have to agree that less ticket prices mean more repeat audience therefore more footfalls.

And what about extreme cold at the time of PK’s release, especially in the north, resulting in fewer footfalls in the early morning and late night shows?

Breaking: Pluto is No Longer a Planet
    By Fasal SSS
    July 11, 2017

Keralabad (KBTimes) — On Twitter, srk has confirmed ‘Pluto’ is no longer a planet. So, what happened to his land and kingdom of Paglapur is still to be known.

But going by the latest reports, he has shifted his Kingdom to Uranus along with his followers and set up a new one over the planet. Nevertheless, the solar or inter-planet migration has led to a conflict between the original inhabitants on the planet Uranus, who go by the name of Jaadoopurians.

Furthermore, the conflict has been intensified between the two alien groups over the competition to use the same calculator for the calculations of BO figures on 26th January, 2017.

Watch this space for more updates.
    Sorry posting an off-topic news.

  • Its all out in open now that srk inflated figures of d first day of his film hny…….by 9-10 crs……such a big looser…..

And PK had its first national holiday (not sunday) on the 7th day unlike BB and sultan.

So you simply can’t compare apples with oranges.

    Kindly publish my comment.

  • Anand the original ( see upper) revealed the original picture of RED CHILLIES ENTERTAINMENT that if the screen count, occupancy and ticket price is more than Happy New Year then how is it possible to collect 44.9 crore on opening day. It may possible if people GODD MEIN BAITHKAR FILM DEKHTA which is not possible. It is cleared that RED CHY ENTMN is a froad i.e. they hidden the original (trade) figure. OH THANKS ANAND FOR REVEALING THAT.

  • A comment not related to this article…..ystrday I watch Fan on TV just for TP…what a crap film that was…
    Story- no story
    Direction- big letdown..
Srk acting – as aryan…normal/regular acting nothing extraordinary….
    as fan(Gaurav)…pathetic(overacting) as always..not convincing at all…
Don’t know how on earth can anyone will love a movie like fan….srk fans were going blah blah over his acting(overacting)…will never watch It again….pathetic movie Fan…

  • SALMAN FANS WHY FORGET THE JAI HO WHEN TALKING ABOUT FAN…
AND DILWALE WORLDWIDE FIGURE IS HIGHER THEN PRDP…
    WHAT ABOUT THAT GUYS

LET SALMAN FACE ANY CLASH LYKS OF DILWALE AND BE RELEASED HIM MOVIE LYKE FAN THEN V C THE TRUE STARDOM OF SALMAN…

  • Sultan ‘ve chance 2 collect 400 cr coz Its contents is Extraordinary like pk so Goooo it for 400 cr club

  • I am happy that it is doing so good! But i am sad that YRF is producing the damn film. 18cr is my prediction for Sultan for Monday. YRF is purposefully giving low number so Salman doesn’t get a huge cut. Otherwise i think the movie would actually been like the trade says 20cr+ but that is not possible.

  • The movie was ok one time watchable don’t overhype it….it has lot of connection with lot of movies…brothers etc….

  • Conspiracy theory floating in SRK camp : YRF has distorted / fudged Sultan figures to show a better trending rather than showing 44-45cr on 1st day and eid day …. ufffffff

  • WowwwwwwwW from overseas market it did 92 cr in just 5 days around 14 million dollar whereas BB did 87 cr in 7 days. IT will easily break 3I , DILWALE , BB, MNIK overseas in 2 week i am sure 100%.

  • 400crs??? @indicine
    pk hai kya

sultan wil slow down wom not xtraordinary like pk/bb
youngsters lovd it…thats reasn for superb! 5 days..

  • @Indicine
That means Amir films have highest average ticket price,no.of free open weeks,no compition thats why PK collects 340 Cr….what a logic…….
i want to ask one question then why there is open weeks? any one can release between 3 weeks?….. what about PK buisness…..see the week days…..strong hold
why always salman gets compition from 1st or 2nd week?…..
but you have not mention the opening weekend that BB and SULTAN Have……
Hats of to you….. you are talking in the favour of Salman
koi bhi Amir ki movie ati hain to aap log bolte ho highest ticket prices…..koi bhi salman ki movie ati hai aap log bolte ho lowest price ticket…..
aap log pahle 5 dino ki chutti nahi dekhate…..only whole cristmas chutti dekhate hein…
muze ek bat kahni hein release ke pahle 5 din hi movie record breaking buisness karti hain bad mein holiday bhi ata hein to uska jada fayda nahi hota ……

  • Everythink is possible…but if movie earn next week sat atlest 15 cr and sun 20+ then movie lifetime will be 350 + to 375

  • Next saturday and sunday collection crusial for sultan…
    Bb:-24.05cr
    Pk:-22.25cr
    Sultan :- 24+ prediction !!

  • Theres no denying the fact these 3 movies had immense repeat value hence such love is/ was shown by audiences.

    Proud of all 3 movies

  • @indicine-

why didn’t you add kareena’s name while talking about bajrangi bhaijaan? You said “Salman khan-kabir Khan’s bajrangi bhaijaan”. Isn’t the lead actress not important for the success of a movie? Moreover, when you can mention anushka Sharma’s name while speaking about PK, why not kareena? Is it just because the former is at the top today and the latter isn’t as popular as she once was?

  • After the euphoria of this wknd I think its time for some rational thinking coz imo PK had the better release strategy- sorry to say but with hindsight YRF should have released the film on Thursday not Wednesday.

PK had the Xmas holiday on its 7th day n New Yrs holiday on its 14th day- smart strategy…!
In the end those holiday day figures plus xmas holiday period will be the difference as I believe PKs record will be too far..!
