‘Avatar 2’ delayed, won’t release Christmas 2017

The sequel to James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’, which is the world’s highest grossing film of all time, are in for some disappointment as ‘Avatar 2’ will have a delayed release.

The film was previously scheduled to hit theatres during the Christmas 2017 weekend.

The news comes just a month after the director said that the production team targeted the holiday release date. There is no new release date set for the film, and in fact, the previous release date was never officially confirmed by 20th Century Fox.

Soundstage construction and some computer animation work for the project is still in the early stages. Furthermore, a start date for filming ‘Avatar 2’ has not been set yet.

Meanwhile, other sources speculated that the decision to delay ‘Avatar 2’ might also be affected by Disney’s announcement to move ‘Star Wars Episode VIII’ to December 15, 2017.

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana will reprise their roles as Jake Sully and Neytiri. Sigourney Weaver is also set to return but she will play a new character.

Cameron has indicated that ‘Avatar 2’ may be set underwater on a moon of the planet Pandora.

‘Avatar 2’ is now expected to release in 2018.

Released in 2009, ‘Avatar’ grossed $2.78 billion worldwide – which converts to Rs 18,860 crore. That’s more than the domestic collections of all Hindi movies released in the last 10 years.

  • Hmmm, I know, 2 days ago Disney Changed Schedule of Star Wars 8 from May to December and moved down Pirates of the Carribean from July to May. The reason behind these changes are Avatar 2, which was scheduled to release in December 2017. Avatar 3 in December 2018 and Avatar 4 in December 2019. but this news disappointed me bcz Now I have to wait for 2 more years.

  • Aamir is in talks to do a film with Farhan Akhtar and V. Vijayendra Prasad. Hope it releases on Xmas 2017.

  • First Rajamouli’s Baahubali 2 and now even James Cameron is scared to clash Avatar 2 with Aamir’s Dangal.

  • I didn’t like star wars neither the game of it
Avatar is classic and I am pretty sure if it releases ant time it will break the record of the 1st one … !!!!!
James cameron is an ace director !!!!!

  • Released in 2009, ‘Avatar’ grossed $2.78 billion worldwide – which converts to Rs 18,860 crore. That’s more than the domestic collections of all Hindi movies released in the last 10 years.

    Just OOOOOOOOOOOOHHhhhhh

  • No need to Convert Avtar collection in Indian currency, its better to give footfalls the film garnered. That was indeed very huge but give realistic comparison with Indian films.

Avtar 2 will break the Avtar records worldwide.

  • I was the one who chose Avatar over 3idiots, all my friends opted 3 idiots and I moved in with a feeling of witnessing something extraordinary its was screen 1 Inox Goa.. and trust me it was like a dream.. Avtar was something different..
And this news makes me sick..

  • 18000+ cr rupees!!!!

I read somewhere that Bollywood’s reach has been bigger than Hollywood since last decade

Bollywood stars are more famous than Hollywood actors in many parts of the world but the collections show all of these things are wrong

  • I liked the way Indicine summed it up :D

“Released in 2009, ‘Avatar’ grossed $2.78 billion worldwide – which converts to Rs 18,860 crore. That’s more than the domestic collections of all Hindi movies released in the last 10 years”

  • Now Ranbir Fans will say Avatar 2 got postponed because they didnt want to clash with Sanjay Dutt Biopic

  • James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’, is not the world’s highest grossing film of all time, it is now second behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” as the gross business till yesterday-
Star Wars: The Force Awakens- $863,148,249 2015
    Avatar- $760,507,625 2009^

  • Sad :(

So starwars get d opportunity to hit 1 billion marks domestically with episode 8…for me starwars is totally bakwas movie. no matter how much it collect at north america box office, avatar 2 will hit it hard..forget d world wide collection….avatar 2 will become first movie to collect 3 billion dollar world wide n may be 3.5

  • Indicine please tell me is it confirmed or is is just because of star wars 8 slated to release in december(then it will be like Sulthan vs Raees clash). Then i think it will be a grand summer 2018 release.

  • @Ace Khan, Try reading the article, it is talking about chrismas 2017 and not 2016…

@Indicine, plz add the words “The fans of” in the start of the article…

  • @indicine, The last lines of this article shows how U have a lack of knowledge About global cinema.
Why u r points are wrong because,
    1)Difference in Market value $1 =Rs 68.
2)High ticket price in the name of 3D, IMAX ,IMAX 3D.
In USA avg ticket price is $9 for morning and $22 for night shows.where as for india it is just $2-$4.
    3) Reach of hollywood and ticket price in other countries.
a)In malaysia, for hollywood movies price is RM60-RM80, For Tamil films just RM8-RM9.This is only one example to show but this ticket price follows same route even in every countries including India.See avg ticket for hollywood movies in in India is $5-$10 . but for indian films only it is $2-$4.
4)Hollywood movies release in other countries like China,Russia by filming nearly 20% scenes related to respective countries culture. But Indian movies release in same format of India showing our traditional culture to world.
5)Last there are thousands of answers with me, If i can have free time & permission from you @indicine, i will make article and post aboutt Indian films Reach in all over world.
6)Last u told avatar collected $2.78 billion and equivalent to 18,440 crores in indian currency, but way back in 2009 indian currency was strong with $1=40 to 44 INR so it is only 10,000cr range, Ha……………. wait and if you take out that $ from above article it is just 2.78billion=278 crores. that To Gross. 3 idiots collected tat amount of gross in India itself do i need to explain you more.

AS A BOLLYWOOD WEBSITE DON’T DEGRADE OUR INDIAN FILMS COMPARING WITH HOLLYWOOD, I WILL BOYCOTT U R WEBSITE IF U COME UP WITH AMATEURISH STATISTICS ABOUT INDIAN FILMS.
Better u study our INDIAN films History and come up with good article.
Sorry @indicine for harsh on you and late comment.

  • @Irfan you nailed it mate! Always there is tendency among BO websites in India to show that Hollywood movie collections are humongous while not considering many factors (some of the few you jotted down already) and especially the production budget. Production cost of Avatar was close to 250 Million dollars in 2009. So even if you take the exchange rate for 1 dollar as 41 Rs in 2009 its production cost is approx INR 1000 crores. Avatar no doubt has unbelievable BO returns, but the economics of Hollywood movies are much more different than that of Indian movies especially with regard to the global reach and ticket prices. So with due respect to Indicine that final sentence in the article is just blowing things out of proportion. Doesn’t make any sense at all.
