Q. Don’t you think that Khan movies grossed 200 above only due to festive weekends. Whenever they release in non-holiday it managed to do around 100 crores only. Akshay, however, didn’t get any festive period still his films grosses 100 crores. If Akshay got Christmas – Eid – Diwali weekend, don’t you think it can do 200 crore?
A. You cannot take credit away from the Khans. Eid as a festive weekend was non-existent before Salman Khan came, dominated and made it his own. Christmas was considered to be a non-favourable period because of extreme cold in North India before Aamir Khan started releasing his films and made it the biggest period for Hindi films.
As for Akshay Kumar, he has got several favourable release periods, including the four biggest and third most successful period i.e Post IPL:
- Holiday – Post IPL
- Baby – Republic Day weekend
- Brothers - Independence Day (big day for film business)
- Singh Is Bling - Gandhi Jayanti (Haider and Bang Bang collected more than 200 crore combined)
- Airlift – Republic Day weekend
- Housefull 3 – Post IPL
It’s not like Akshay is releasing his films during normal weekends. He’s picking the best out of what’s available and he’s getting solo releases – something which Hrithik didn’t get for Bang Bang and won’t get for Mohenjo Daro.
Also, even if you release Brothers on Christmas, it won’t work, like we’ve seen with Tees Maar Khan which released during Christmas 2010.
Not being negative or critical of Akshay here, but there is potential for big films like Brothers / OUATIMD / Housefull 3 to get to 150 crore and beyond during non-festive periods. Like we’ve seen with films like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Tanu Weds Manu Returns and others.

Don’t forget before Salman released Wanted on Eid in 2009, Akshay did it in 2008 with Sing Is Kinng. It was a record breaker.
Talking about Christmas, 2007 and blockbuster Welcome.
Though Tees Maar Khan did not work at box-office, but it opened to 3rd highest of all time in 2010. Rowdy Rathore, highest non-holiday opening in 2012.
So, its content and festive season which puts Akshay below the Khans not star power.
A right movie with EDX release date and Akshay can change all the equations. He has done it in past.
You can’t compare Independence day, republic day, or any single day holidays with EDX.
During festive seasons, families watches movies in more numbers than they do during other favorable release periods. Christmas has added advantage of New Year holiday as well. Eid, After a whole month without entertainment, the people rushes to theaters like never before. Diwali, next day to Laxmi pooja is best day for any movie, open any record books and tell me if there is any movie of any star and of genre has done better business than the day after Laxmi pooja (Happy New Year, Prem Ratan Dhan Payo). Both movies were below the mark with the content, released during Diwali has collected more than 40cr on single day.
The point is, you can’t compere Single day favorable release periods with festive like EDX.
Lets take example of Each Khan movie without EDX.
1. Salman Khan: Riding on high with record breaker success of Dabangg, it was Ready which got so-called favorable release periods i.e. Post-IPL, and threes a difference of approx. 30-35cr in life time collection.
Take an another example of Jai-Ho with another favorable release periods i.e. Republic day, we all know, where does it stand between Salmans highest grossing movies.
And now, the so-called biggest super star of Bollywood, doesn’t release his movies other than EDX.
2. Aamir Khan: We know the fate of Talash which released during normal weekend. In recent time, he has not released his movie other than Christmas weekend. I bet you, in coming days, he won’t do that.
3. SRK: We have the example of recent Fan. Don’t tell me Fan was different movie, then what was Airlift, baby, Special 26, OMG, the list is so big.
If the Happy New Year, would have been released except EDX weekend, it would have been struggled to collect 100cr. SRK has only few bumper movies CE (EID) and HNY(Diwali), OSO(Diwali).
I don’t intent to offend any one, but please don’t compare Akshay with others, he is way better man, to be clear I said man not star or superstar. Don’t include him in race of box-office game, let him do what he is doing and we love that.
No he will instead bankrupt exhibitors if he ever again gets a EDX release…!
He only does if he do one movie per year. People wait to see a particular actor movie like salman and srk or amir or hrithik. Akshay comes 4 times in year. So people have choice. But he is consistent. Let him do one movie per year. The collection will be par of salman and aamir
Joker Boy doesnt promote his crap nor does he invest any time in the pre production stage like ensuring a good cast is selected, producer invests properly into project n director is able to narrate the story properly / as intended etc etc

Akshay have done exceptionally well to give 3 successful films out off 4 in 2015.
He release his films in every 3 months but still then weekend BO remains above 47 crores for all films besides getting poor reviews. Think !!!!
If Akshay does 1 film per year he will definitely get above 25 Crores initial regardless of release weekend.

If any of these 4 factors is missing no movie can’t reach 200 cr. Mark
All akshay movies missed a factor or two to reach 200 cr.
Although akshays stardom is less than khans he can deliver 200 cr. If other factors will help

No offense Akki fans .Devgn has had some low opening but his clash records has been unbelievable and giving 32 cr opening on the 5th or 6th lucrative period is another testimony. Remember after sallu and aamir who thought Ajay will join them with 2 100 cr before Teesra and Akki? Shivaay is risky it can hit or flop but if it emerges a people film by weekend then 200 cr will be car walk with style. Even not Shivaay I still see him having a 200 cr very soon. Good answer again. Akshay can definitely cross 200 crore given the content clicks. But, so far, his most critical movie collected just below 130 crore and highest grosser just over 130 crore.
Release period and budget do make a difference, but some fans make it seem like an excuse. For example, nobody has prevented Akshay to release his movies on EDX, nobody has stopped Akshay from doing big budget movies, nobody has forced him to release 4 movies in a year.
Maybe, producers of his movies don’t have enough faith release his movie during EDX against Khans, maybe producers don’t want to spend 100+ crore on Akshay, maybe Akshay don’t want to shoot movies for over 100 days, and most of all, Akshay himself has said on ‘Coffee With Karan’ that he doesn’t care about scripts, he signs any movie offered to him as long he’s getting his desired money, which has somehow damaged his image and neutrals tend to stay away from his movies unless content is good like Airlift.
Indicine did fine job by pointing out he still gets best release periods after EDX, I would also like to remind ‘Boss’ released on Bakrid, had a popular music, but it collected only 12 crores on a national holiday.

Akshay is a workaholic..he never think of Khan’s ..srks huge budget movie floped..and he is out of minds..akki makes movies on his own stardom not taking top most heroins in his movies who asks for crores..as in airlift ..nimrit..a brilliant actress but not well known..or neither have to work with top most production house like yrf or hiranis..his movies always recover their cost and make profits at least 80 present of his movies..making four movies a year is not a child play…and I think he will do so because his movies are money makers for producesers..

However to have a shy at 200 cr figure he will need a big budget movie and a grand release but may be that is not what he is targeting (with Robot 2 being an exception).
