Akshay Kumar completes 23 years in the industry

23 years ago on this day, a martial arts expert and chef from Bangkok with absolutely no filmy background, made his debut in a movie called Saugandh. Today, he is one of the highest paid actors in the country, the biggest inspiration for strugglers and almost a perfect human being. His name is Rajiv Hari Om Bhatia popularly known the world over as Akshay Kumar.

Born in a Punjabi family in Amristar, Rajiv was brought up in Chandni Chowk. When he was three, his father was transferred to Mumbai where the family stayed in a 100 square-foot rented hall in a fishermen’s colony called Koliwada. He got admitted in a big school like Don Bosco in Mumbai purely by luck. During the school admissions, while waiting for his turn for the interview, Rajiv saw a piece of paper lying on the floor. He picked it up and dropped it into the dustbin. Father Gatty, the head of the school, noticed this and immediately gave him an admission without interviewing him.

After his schooling, Rajiv joined the Khasla college and studied there for a year. He later dropped out and went to Bangkok to learn martial arts. He also joined the Metro guest house and started cooking and serving food to the guests.

Three years later, he travelled to Dhaka (Bangladesh) and worked there for 6 months. He also worked in Kolkata for about 2 years and returned to Delhi to start a artificial jewellery business. He would buy jewellery in Delhi and sell it in Mumbai for a small margin. Soon, he started teaching martial arts for a monthly pay of Rs 5,000. As luck would have it, Rajiv was offered a modelling assignment by a stranger and was paid Rs 21,000. The fact that he got paid more than 4 times his monthly salary for a quick modelling assignment, was one of the reasons why he chose modelling as a career.

One morning he missed his flight for an ad-shoot at Bangalore. Disappointed with himself, he went for his usual rounds at various film studios with his portfolio. That same evening, Rajiv was signed for a lead role by producer Pramod Chakravarthy for a movie titled Deedar.

Rajiv was the original choice for Phool Aur Kante but since he had given dates for Deedar, Phool Aur Kante went to Ajay Devgan. Rajiv and Ajay would both practice stunts with Ajay’s father, Veeru Devgan. While Rajiv was early, Ajay was a latecomer.

Unfortunately, Deedar got delayed, but Rajiv signed more films and changed his screen name to Akshay Kumar. The rest is history.

  • COngrats Akki!!!!!!!!!!!! Much respect for this humble and great actor and self made superstar!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! with the best comic timing!!!

  • @nipin alcohic Once again you landed your foot right in it… I always suspected, actually well I privately knew deep down you never read articles initially as you are predominantly fixated upon spouting your rubbish first before your beau Sakhi Ranting Rawant gets here…!

You illiterate- atleast read the article… I bet even in exams you jump straight in describing how Rohit 3 was the best cartoon since Toonpur Ka Superhero and then 30 mins into examination you realise “oooops question is asking me to describe Nett collections” and then you go back to mumbo jumbo gibberish cloud cuckoo land and detail Papa Roshans own version of how to describe/ work out Nett Collections…!

As you love 3 idiots supposedly- take on board Aamirs advice- dont chase success (which in your twisted case is Beating sakhi ranting rawant) but chase excellence… Write a decent comment for once you halfbaked potato head…!

  • Congrats Akki

@r420 nice to see you have mellowed recently and toned fown your anti khan mantra also…! You are an obnoxious rat who one day will change colours again and restart your nonsense against Aamir/ bhai so I will be there to put you back in your rightful place- the Sewer…! If you want to movk Sarkar Rukh Khan then you are most welcome but mind your filthy tongue in future against my fav khans…

@khiladi fans Seriously what is this nonsense…? Praise Akki indeed but why are you still wanting to compare him with the Khans or The Big 5 (khans plus Rohit n Rabbit)…!

Dont make delusional statements of grandeur when you need to be consistent and watch all his movies in unison before expecting the wider cine going public to watch his movies too… On your own Akki earns 60 crores but with full public backing he can reach 100 cr plus… Dont isolate yourselves and make a movkery of Akki- an actor that has entertained me thoroughly since 1994 coz Mohra was magnificent and still a good watch today. Be humble guys

  • well, he was & neither is my favr8….but i have seen almost all of his films…& ll watch his films in future too….but after watching his KWK ….i liked him more…& though i respected this man before…..now, his respect have grown more….he is humble, blunt & nice…. i liked his qualities….
best of luck for your future products…

  • Congrats Akshay Kumar & all his fans for completing 23 years journey in Bollywood.
Hats off to you man, an ordinary middle class guy reach at the level of bollywood, which is not less than any superstar, acted most no of films and total income with around 2200cr is amazing feat and without any god Father and big banners,he is not brilliant actor in serious films but in comedy he is baap of all actors in current time, most fav actor in comedy for me after Legend Govinda, started as an action star who given so much risky kinda action scenes earlier and only competitor for Sunny deol in action that time (though Sunny action oriented roles were too opposite than of Akshay).
i know his fans happy he doing 4-5 movies per year but as a non-fan of him i request him to do 2 movies per year max and thay both will work well and remain in the heart for his fans and non-fans if they are good.
just watched Akshay in Koffee with Karan, and must say the best show i enjoyed in KWK this ever(before this season i haven’t seen any KWK episode barring BIG B-Sheta Nanda’s), i am Aamir fans & like Salman too but i found Akshay episode In KWK more enjoyable for me than Aamir-Salman’s.the way he simply out shined Karan in the show, Akshay Karan par bhari Pad gaya. and with amazing sense of humor he simply not answered in rapid fire round the common question rate the star Aamir,Salman, srk,HR,Ranbir and he refused to answer Simply-where is I in the list?superb man.

@Dinesh superb list for Akshay, its great.
@aeeyyy stop kid, in Akshay article even praising him you are trying to degrading others, grow up poor fellow.every time it doesn’t mean to insult other by praising you Idol.

  • As salman khan says that no one grown as an actor as akshay kumar does, once aamir said that people are going to cinema hall just heard that its a akshay kumar film. he is truly a superstar of billions. luv u my hero

  • 2014 should be a good year for akshay…has some good films lined up…..however, Ive always felt that he has not done full justice to his potential…..his script section has been questionable at times

  • Akshay Kumar definately a good entertainer…i enjoyed lot of his movies..

    Khiladyon ka Khiladi
Hera Pheri / Phir Hera Pheri
    Namestey London
    Garam Masala
    Sing is King
    Special Chabbis
and Welcome is still my all time favourite of Akshay Kumar…

Hope he entertains us for another 10 years effectively…

  • Congratulations the real Action king/Khiladi of bollywood n most importantly humble n down to earth personality !!!!!!!
