Agneepath HIT or FLOP: Box office Prediction

With exactly a week to go for the release of Agneepath, it’s time for some box-office predictions. For few who are still unaware, Agneepath directed by Karan Malhotra is the remake of Amitabh Bachchan’s 1990 classic. The film, produced by Karan Johar under the Dharma Productions banner, stars Hrithik Roshan, Priyanka Chopra, Sanjay Dutt and Rishi Kapoor.

We have always strongly believed that a Hrithik Roshan film with mass-appeal, is guaranteed to open to a huge response at the box-office. Almost all of his commercial entertainers like Dhoom 2 and Krrish opened to record-breaking numbers. Even Kites, which is one of his biggest flops, had a good initial weekend. 

Coming back to Agneepath, the film’s USP is Hrithik Roshan and the item number by Katrina Kaif. The buzz is strong and the music is a hit. Also the fact that the last biggie (Don 2) released more than a month back, should help Agneepath. The only concern? Some of the trailers were dark and intense, with a bit of blood, gore and violence too. Will the family audiences stay away?

IF GOOD (positive word-of-mouth)

• Day 1 – 15 crores
• Weekend – 60 crores (4 days)
• Weekdays – 25 crores
• Week 1 Total – 85 crores (8 days)
• Final – 140 crores+

IF AVERAGE (mixed word-of-mouth)

• Day 1 – 15 crores
• Weekend – 56 crores (4 days)
• Weekdays – 20 crores
• Week 1 Total – 76 crores (8 days)
• Final – 115 crores

IF BAD (negative word-of-mouth)

• Day 1 – 13 crores
• Weekend – 44 crores (4 days)
• Weekdays – 12 crores
• Week 1 Total – 56 crores (8 days)
• Final – 75 crores

HIT or FLOP Prediction: The opening will be good, if not great. The initial weekend itself should recover most of the film’s investment. How big a HIT the film can go on to be, would then depend on word-of-mouth and how well it manages to sustain during the weekends. We think Agneepath has a good chance to attain HIT status.
